People also think they might return in a future Viking set, but that’s speculation.
Sunstone is one of those cards that no one seems to know about. If you're running a Loam package there is almost no reason to not try and run snow lands and fit Sunstone in.
The only place I run them is when I want Into the North as another 2-drop ramp spell.
Added benefit (besides, you know, Dark Depths) is there are a cycle of snow taplands. If they already enter tapped from Into the North (and every non-Nature's Lore two-drop ramp spell), that makes them slightly less terribad.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
In my case, besides the lens, I run them because my choice for "pimping out" my Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder deck wasn't foils, but first printings. I can't really justify paying for 30 or so alpha swamps, but I had no trouble buying Ice Age snow-covereds. I used to run Withering Wisps, but began getting more and more anal about honoring up to date concepts of the color pie, and I believe such an effect is actually red, where Pyrohemia, the colorshifted variant, is the best of the bunch. My arbitrary deck construction rules are getting out of hand.
Tainted Pact gets quite a bit better with half/half (ecspcially, if you are only running two basics of each color)
On a slightly off-topic note, there's a EDH-like tainted pact deck in legacy that uses snow lands as well as normal basics. It really is a sight to behold, since it's all 1-ofs, except for 4 tainted pact! and it puts up some pretty good numbers too.

There’s also a few cards that require Snow mana to activate like Stalking Yeti or Rimefeather Owl, but those are also outlier cases as well.
