Hey all i have questiin. Im running reaper king changeling combo. And i have alot cards that let me search library for rebel cards mercinary ect. I wanted to as does the wording put on the battlefield skip the stack?. Compare to cast or play without paing mana cost. I was curious cause my buddy plays blue counter deck so was wondering if it skips stack or not.
Activated abilities - of say Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero - do use the stack. If you activate the first ability to search your library, that activated ability does go on the stack. Once everyone passes priority, it would resolve, allowing you to search your library for any Rebel and put it on the battlefield before shuffling your library. Please note that (in this particular example) you don't have to name the card you are searching for, so they have to respond before they know what is coming out - once you reveal it, it's too late.
Answers that your opponent can use to disrupt an activated ability are much rarer than things that answer spells (like Counterspell), but they do exist, which is part of why everyone has to pass priority before the ability can resolve. Here is a small list of things they could use:
the answer's basically met, but just so you know, practically everything uses the stack in magic.
Those abilities can be countered by things like time stop, certain split second effects.
Morph on the other hand DOESN'T use the stack. So if for example you search for a rebel and someone trickbinds the ability, you CAN willbender trickbind and make it point to something else.
Also, mana abilities also don't use the stack (so you can't dust bowl someone's only G source land in response to them tapping it for mana).
Playing lands into play also doesn't use the stack.
I think it's useful to think about 2 different things that exist on the stack; spells and abilities. Spells are cards, and abilities are based on cards, but they generally don't change zones (think any cards in play that follow the "cost: effect" format). Spells are countered by cards that say "counter target spell", and abilities are countered by "counter target ability". Counter spells are significantly more common than countering abilities though.
