Hey everyone! I've run into some store credit and extra money and I now want to make a new edh deck to play. I currently run;
Grenzo, Dungeon Warden in a toolbox style
Windgrace in a go wide, go tall mix
And a Jodah big mana
Right now I've been deciding between Varina Zombie tribal/ aristocrat, Arcades defenders and Gishath dinosaur tribal.
If you've had any experience with the 3 let me know! Or if you have other ideas for decks maybe based around the 3 I currently run or something way different from them. I kinda really wanted a tribal deck but anything is welcome.
My starting budget for the deck is about $250-$300. Thanks everyone.
Gishath is pretty easy to make, and also pretty cheap to make. The biggest problem with it is that most dinosaurs are, frankly, pretty awful, especially when compared with other creatures of the same cost. As such, you probably want to focus less on running tons of dinosaurs and more on running the better ones and ways to get Gishrath doing his thing early and often. Tons of ramp spells, protection from boardwipes, creature-based card draw, tribal enablers and so forth. Unless you want to go purely with dinos for flavor/theme reasons, don't be afraid to run cards like Beast Whisperer, Oracle of Mul Daya and such that will make your deck run more smoothly.
Arcades is also very strong, but a) it's kind of played to death already, and b) a lot of really good defender creatures have somewhat spiked in price as Arcades got popular. Solid deck, though, and it tends to run pretty well even without the absolute optimal cards.
I have no experience with Varina, either building her or playing against her, so I have no comment to offer there.
Varina seems the most fun to me for a tribal deck, of the three options. Dinosaurs don't have enough support to make a good deck and defenders are boring to me.
Varina has a lot of power and different ways of being built. You can go combo, attrition, or aggro.
I have Varina and Arcades. Both play similar, tribal combined with card advantage.
Varina has a broader variety of builds, ranging between any combination of zombie creature tribal, zombie tokens, card advantage/selection, combo (e.g. Phyrexian Altar + Gravecrawler + any zombie enters/dies trigger), and graveyard manipulation through discard. The disadvantage of Varina (and zombie tribal) is that it isn't very good at dealing with flying. There are ways to mitigate this weakness, but they will dilute the deck without synergising with its strategy. Deck list here: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/varina-zombie-queen/
Arcades has a narrow build, defenders or bust. You can add in some alternative wincons, flicker effects, and ramp, but you don't have much choice on the bulk of the deck. Bant is an arguably more consistent colour combination compared to Esper. Esper is far from "weak" in comparison; however, the benefit of green ramp in our format cannot be understated. I'm also yet to find a natural weakness within Arcades, it doesn't seem to matter what its paired up against, it performs consistently well. Again, that might just be because its Bant. I personally do not recommend Gishath, though take that with a grain of salt as I haven't built the deck myself. I've watched it played, and it is another Naya big-creature stomp deck. That can be very boring, but it may suit some players well. No judgement for those that find Gishath fun, just wouldn't be suitable for me.
Recommend Varina if you want more build variety, and Arcades if you want play consistency.
