Let's get some hard data, folks! Which of the new commanders excite you, and which ones are you building?
Me, I've already started on my Aminatou Esper Blink deck. I've always wanted to do a Blink deck, but all the obvious Commanders like Brago are so overdone that I always held off on it. Aminatou may not be quite as powerful as those, but having Esper colors and being a planeswalker, I feel she does bring something unique to the table that made me excited to build her.
I'm still mulling over Tawnos and Yennet. Both also fill niches I've been wanting for a long time: Tawnos is a multicolored Kurkesh and much more what I was hoping for in an Izzet artificer than Jhoira due to being more tricksy, but I'm not quite sure about win conditions yet. Yennet as well seems a much better topdeck matters commanders than quite a few previous choices like Intet, but I'm thinking Vaevictis might be even better.
The only guarantee in life is that I WILL be building Esper zombies. My wife has waited a loooong time to be able to use the White and Blue zombies in the same build, and this commander checks all her boxes, so as the architect of the family I'll be converting Athreos, God of Passage into an Esper deck.
I am intrigued by both Yuriko and Xantcha and anticipate building one or the other, maybe both, but haven't decided on exactly which yet.
Beyond that this year didn't excite me. Windgrace doesn't make me excited enough to add red to The Gitrog Monster, none of the artifact dudes surpass Daretti, Scrap Savant, and if I were to build a second bant deck (already have Jenara Doubling Season) I'd build Arcades over any of the new ones since all of them are single-minded but Arcades is more fun.

Tuvasa the Sunlit is the commander I've been waiting for for a long time. I've built many iterations of mono-W, GW, and Bant enchantress with a variety of commanders. A commander that directly supports the gameplan has been a long time coming. Not sure if I'm going full prison or something that feels a little more combo-y, but I'm definitely building something.
Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer didn't interest me when spoiled, but I've seen so many interactions that look like fun that I have to try it out. Mirrorweave is a card I like a lot that I have trouble finding good uses for, and this is a very similar effect on a commander. I'm looking forward to token armies of things that should never have been tokens.
I'm the rare person who wants to build Thantis, the Warweaver. I've really enjoyed forced attacks for both speeding up games and for getting my own attacks through. There are several commanders that incentivize attacking, but not a lot who outright force it. Fumiko the Lowblood is entertaining (and will still be in the deck), but mono-R burns out way too quickly in this kind of strategy. Adding in BG draw and recursion should make it much more resilient and you still get an enormous creature deterrent.

[Pr]Jaya | Estrid | A rotating cast of decks built out of my box.
Yuriko and Tuvasa have already been built and are currently awaiting sleeves. Commanders that draw cards are inherently things that I am drawn to, and these do them in ways that I love: enabling janky unlockable creatures to be powerful (also Ninjas), and reviving an old, absolute pile of a gimmicky enchantress deck I used to run that I am excited to have true support for.
Brudiclad and Windgrace I want to build, I just don't have the inspiration to build them atm. Brudiclad I do have a general idea of where I'll take it, but I also currently have an artifact deck that's hogging lots of powerful artifact support cards, so I'll probably wait till I'm done enjoying that deck. Windgrace I'm a bit stumped on what overall strategy to take, I just know that I've always loved land based strategies (Borboygmos Enraged etc.) so an idea will come in time, I have too many decks hogging powerful lands atm however so I'm in no rush.
I feel I am somewhat alone in my excitement for Arixmethes. Having a consistent effect out of the command zone, specifically the ability to always go straight to 7 mana from 4 with few ways for opponents to stop you is very powerful and can break deck building in certain ways. I haven't looked too much into an overall theme outside of Krakens and big sea monsters, but I think there's some potential for a great deck that can allow some lesser played expensive bombs to shine.
I want to like Arixmethes, but I feel that for all his unique design, they played it a bit too safe with him. The fact that he comes into play tapped and has no evasion neuters both his land and his creature form somewhat. I would have liked him a lot more if he entered untapped and had Islandwalk, but maybe that would in fact have made him too strong.
I'm surprised to see Tuvasa in the lead! I haven't seen nearly as much hype for her as for some other options like Yuriko, but maybe that's just because she's not all that flashy, but simply quietly gives an already popular deck type just the Commander it's been wanting.
I didn't think much of him at first, but Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer is right up my alley. Despite being a Grixis player, I could never seem to find an Izzet Commander to my tastes. But making an army of dorky 1/1 tokens, gold, or treasure and then taking a turn to transform them into some stupid big creature and swing out all at once? Absolutely hilarious. How could I say no?
Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow also appeals to me. Partially because I started playing Magic at the end of Kamigawa block, so I have fond memories of Ninjitsu cards and weird mechanics. But also because she very much reminds me of Edric, Spymaster of Trest in my preferred colors.
I really, really wanted to like the Esper deck's PW, Aminatou, but I was hoping for the precon to have more payoffs for topdeck matters. Varina, Lich Queen still looks pretty sweet on the other hand - not huge on tribal, personally, but I like the mass loot-lifegain and token creation (having "exile 2 cards", not "exile 2 creatures" sold me).
Lord Windgrace also goes on my 'build on a rainy day', because I've wanted to build a Jund land-matters/mass land destruction deck for a while now. It struck me that he can operate similar to the MLD Daretti builds I've seen, since the spells won't hit the PW. Wipe them out, -3 and rebuild at your own pace. GG.
I want to like Arixmethes, but I feel that for all his unique design, they played it a bit too safe with him.
It honestly feels like they were playing this whole release a bit too safe. I can honestly say that every legendary creature spoiled thus far (looking only at mtgsalvations spoiler list) is a bit disappointing in some way, and even a bunch of other cards spoiled thus far, but I'm not going to spend two hours typing up why they all disappoint me.
I've got 4 commanders from this set that interest me, though I think only one of them will be able to keep that interest past a few games with the deck.
Gyrus, Waker of Corpes is the one that interests me the most. He makes tokens of the cards, without paying any mana, and can do larger creatures as the game goes on. It's going to be a weird fusion of reanimator, token, and combo that I think is going to be a blast to play. I do have the concern that the deck with turn into "good stuff" fairly easily which I am going to try and avoid. I think this will be the the second, ever, Jund commander to peak my interest; the first being Vaevictis Asmadi, the Dire.
Varina, Lich Queen is a pretty solid zombie commander. She's far from the top of the list for commanders I want to use for zombie tribal, but mostly cause I haven't actually played zombie tribal yet. I greatly dislike her second ability and I would have liked to be able to target an opponent's cards even if it were limited to creatures. She seems good aside from the second ability which I find fairly disappointing with two colors that are very good at recursion effects.
Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow is pretty good. She has the potential to be pretty powerful and fun. Tutor for a high cmc card and use a bunch of Brainstorm effects with Yuriko to kill everyone. I'd find it fun for one or two games and then never play it again. There aren't enough ninjas to do any sort of half ok tribal without Conspiracy. Interesting while being super boring and I'll probably never actually build now that I think about it.
Arixmethes should have had Hexproof. Or gained Trample when the last Slumber Counter was removed. Or both. And those can be justified by the lore. But honestly, there's so much they got right and I am so thrilled to see him that I'll excuse it.
Converting my Ephara enchantment deck into Kestia, the Cultivator, tossing in a few of my favorite Simic legends (including Arixmethes) in and calling it done.
Tuvasa is very powerful and the best Enchantress general IMO, but I want Theros legends leading most of my decks.
Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow - I was thinking of putting Oona in the 99, tossing in all Ninjas into that deck and putting Yuriko at the helm, making it a Faerie Ninja trickster deck. It's fun with fliers, Bitterblossom, and Faerie shenanigans.
So I unfortunately already have EDH generals in all colors except jund, so I'm building a Lord Windgrace deck, based around ramp, land destruction, and making opponents sac lands with It That Betrays out, hopefully with an Earthlink or something on the field.
(If you'd like to check out the current build, click here)
I have a Kaervek the Merciless punisher deck that I'm toying with just replacing the face commander with Xantcha, Sleeper Agent a few times, but Xantcha will probably end up in the 99.
buying all but Aminatou, doing some tweaks. Wanted a Lord Windgrace styled deck for a while and will be my major project, as I get pieces for Tuvasa(cmon we all know she's the REAL commander of the Bantchantresses deck) and Saheeli to amp them up.
Seems like I'm following the trend. In no order of importance:
Lord Windgrace - seems like a deceptively powerful engine and not as combo-y as Gitrog. The fact his -3 both pays for future tax as well as giving you mana for Constant Mists or Sunstone protection is solid.
Saheeli, the Gifted - don't get me wrong, I love Daretti, but have really wanted a way to jam Arcum and Storm the Vault into a staxy artifact build. She's about as ideal a commander as you can get. Brudiclad def runs in the 99 here.
Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow - I've been wanting to trim colors from my Thrasios/Vial Smasher build for awhile, and this is an interesting way to do it. You can still run some large bombs like Expropriate, Archfiend of Despair, and Emrakul 2.0, albiet in a more aggro-y shell. Me gusta. Yennett is a close second choice here, but Yuriko seems like a more logical descendant of Vial Smasher (i.e., draw/play big cards = burn people).
Tuvasa the Sunlit - I feel like this one explains itself. Clearly fills a long existing gap for the archetype.
Varina, Lich Queen will become the new general for my Esper Zombie deck. I was using Oloro almost entirely for the colors, but Varina is the perfect woman for the job.
I will most likely be building a Tuvasa deck, and I will definitely be building a Lord Windgrace deck, one which is actually a lands deck, as opposed to the awfulness which is the deck he's associated with.
I will be including some of the other Izzet options in my Jhoira artifacts deck.
I may do something with Yuriko or Yennett once the initial excitement over those commanders dies down.
So I unfortunately already have EDH generals in all colors except jund, so I'm building a Lord Windgrace deck, based around ramp, land destruction, and making opponents sac lands with It That Betrays out, hopefully with an Earthlink or something on the field.
Yuriko is built. The real challenge is ensuring that all of the moving parts of the deck run as smoothly as possible, which isn't the easiest of goals.
Lord Windgrace is a considerable disappointment. He is still, unfortunately, the best option for a Jund Lands (destruction) deck I have been planning, and will likely end up being used.
Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow has some design elements that irritate me, but is a card I like quite a bit, and will finally allow me to effectively play the archetype I most enjoy - aggro-control.
Commander Ninjitsu? Really?
What could possibly have been so hard about updating Ninjitsu in the CR to function from "the hand or the command zone", and just giving her that. That would even have allowed the two other such Lengendary creatures to finally be viable choices as well, with a nearly nonexistent cost of doing so.
I had been wanting to build a dimir ninjutsu deck (with Sygg) for a while when Yuriko was spoiled. Now I have her list ready to be tested this week. My only concern with her is that she might end up overplayed and with a bad reputation.
Brudiclad tickles my fancy just because he is so different from all the izzet legends so far. Can't wait to turn treasure tokens into 15 Scourge of the Throne. Or attacking with 870.000 Precursor Golems after a single Cackling Counterpart.
While I am not directly going to build around them as commanders, Thantis, Xantcha and Varchild will be all-stars in my Gahiji deck, which I will turn into Saskia. Forced attacks just go so well with Ghostly Prison effects.
Riku of Two Reflections - Copy, then copy again | Shattergang Brothers - Token Sac&Recur | Gahiji, Honored One - Multiple attack steps | Karametra, God of Harvests - Landfall, Creaturefall, Shroud | Ruhan of the Fomori - Stop hitting yourself | Zurgo Helmsmasher - Equipment&Wraths | Crosis, the Purger - Dragon Tribal Reanimator | Derevi, Empyrial Tactician - No stax, just tap and untap fun | Anafenza, the Foremost - Enduring Ideal Enchantress | Sharuum, the Hegemon - Sphinx Tribal Control | Noyan Dar - Spellslinger | The Mimeoplasm - Counterpalooza
Lists can be found here.
Still convinced the guy on Beseech the Queen is wearing a Mitra-type hat. Wake up sheeple!
Windgrace will take over my lands deck, currently helmed by Kynaios and Tiro, so that I can add in the black "lands" goodies and convert the latter back into enchantress.
Brudiclad is going to take over the Locust God for a while, with LG being in the 99 and modifying the deck to be more focused on token themes. Protip: Shared Animosity and Mana Echoes will still be nuts in the deck.
And Varina is the esper zombie Lord I've been waiting for so long to get. She's not perfect, but I'm still giddy to get it. Being the raging nerd that I am, I'm going to have to find someone to alter her into Sylvanas and finally live that (dumb) dream.
Lord Windgrace is a considerable disappointment. He is still, unfortunately, the best option for a Jund Lands (destruction) deck I have been planning, and will likely end up being used.
I definitely want to make Xantcha because she's the first Rakdos commander that looked like it could be an interesting deck to me. And I want to do Bantchantress, but I still haven't decided which of the three new options I want to helm the deck. I'm currently leaning towards Estrid for shenanigans with untapping enchanted lands.
I've never found a home for one of my favorite cards, Baleful Strix, so I'm currently building Yuriko just for it.
Ninja bird tribal!? Bonus points for having an excuse to run Ink-Eyes.
If no one else im my group builts Arixmethes, I'll make some silly seafood deck for him as well.
The other commanders I'm really not sure about.
I already payed for all of the decks in advance (20€ per deck so not too sad about it) so I kinda want to get some more mileage out of them but they don't quite hit the sweet spot for me. For now I'm considering Tusava and Yenett but I'm not convinced yet by either. Saheeli is also an option if my locust experiments go nowhere. She could be a nice X-spells commander or something like that. Really dislike her artwork though.
yea o am only getting esper and izzet. If I get arix, it will be a single. Bant and jund do not speak to me at all. Esper had a couple.benerals I want (lich queen and yuriko) and I am building brudiclad. Izzet does provide me with the PW as well that makes tokens too. So profit?
Me, I've already started on my Aminatou Esper Blink deck. I've always wanted to do a Blink deck, but all the obvious Commanders like Brago are so overdone that I always held off on it. Aminatou may not be quite as powerful as those, but having Esper colors and being a planeswalker, I feel she does bring something unique to the table that made me excited to build her.
