Is it too early to make a speculation thread for commander 2018? Probably.
Am I gonna do it anyway? Yes.
So what are y'all expecting for the next set in the commander line? With the return to the return to Ravnica coming soon I think Wizards is probably going to return to two color decks in c18, picking up the 5 color pairs missed in the last round. So Rakdos, Gruul, Azorius, Dimir, and Selesnya. I really hope this is the case becaue I want to build Rakdos but kinda don't like any of the current options for commander. As far as mechanics go, I have no idea. Maybe we'll see a return of experience counters, but I'm not sure about that one as they have never repeated mechanics in the past (as far as I know). Maybe we'll see mechanics revisited so to speak, like they did with eminence being inspired by Oloro's ability. What would be the coolest mechanics to return to if this is the case?
Other than what we are expecting I am curious as to what y'all are hoping for. What color combos, mechanics, and even ideas for legendary creatures are floating around in y'alls heads?
My understanding from the product page is that it'll be planeswalkers. WotC seems like it's putting a lot of pressure on allowing pws as commander in EDH.
Beyond that, who knows, except that I doubt it'll be mono-color again. Maybe it'll be a cycle, and maybe it'll be random color combos like last year - although my money is on a cycle.
My first guess would be a cycle of 2 color pw’s usable as commanders. Of course, at least one deck will then need to have both, which means it has to be three color... so PW commanders are not doable with only 4 decks.

It'd be lovely if it were a cycle of 3-color PW, with another 2-color PW as a sub-Commander. But more likely than not, 2-color PW Commanders with two new Legendary creatures to back them up.
Like many others, I believe they will have PW as commanders again, due to the small product information on Wizard's website, the recent partner walkers released in Battlebond, as well as the leaked artwork featuring PW art, both old and new. I'll link it here. https://imgur.com/gallery/wYWXrdK
There is a lot of new art, some from Core 19 and some from what I expect to be Ravnica (see Tamiyo art). Particularly I'm interested in Elspeth looking like she would be in WB. I hope that comes true.
I think it is pretty safe to assume they will be headed by multicolored planeswalkers. Given that there will be only 4 decks and not 5, I do not expect a symmetric cycle. There might even be a monocolored deck among them, who knows (but I hope not). I would expect both two colored and three colored decks. I could also see more partner legends coming.
EDIT: The teaser for the product reads:
"Choose your commander and carve your path to victory in this unique multiplayer Magic format. Call on powerful planeswalkers and deploy their signature strategies to make sure you're the last player standing." I take that to heavily imply planeswalker commanders. Oh I didn't catch that there were only 400 cards in this set, makes sense. Kinda sad that they are only doing 4 decks again, but last set was pretty neat so I have faith. I'm not quite sure how I feel about Planeswalker commanders but I'm sure it'll be hype anyway.
Personal opinion, but I'd really like them to stop pushing walkers and ditch the partner mechanic. I just want interesting legendary creatures that on their own are worth building around.
I'd really only be happy with printing walker cards of established characters from the story's past, hopefully within the 99. This way they do not have to weaken or limit the card or waste a good legendary creature slot where the commander should be.

Allied pairs most likely. They skipped that before moving on to tribal. Of course, this would mean no Serra, since it's hard to see her as any color other than mono-white. (Yeah, I know we're all wanting to see WB Bunny/Bliss in an angel deck, but it won't be a Serra deck.)

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!

All I want is a Serra Planeswalker that pluses to make Serra Angels. That's it. They let me down last time by making the white one stupid Nahiri that nobody cares about. Now is the chance for redemption, WotC.

I have never found a game improved by planeswalkers. They are there for the lore of the game but honestly they can all go die in a fire and just turn it over to legendaries. I have never been fond of planeswalkers as commanders and while I ultimately was sort of ok with the mono colored cycle its mostly only because most of them sucked and while Daretti is good, mono red has such bad commander options that I kind of forgave them for making him a little nutty.
Ultimately, I don't want to see planeswalker commanders ever again but I suspect many others do.
I mainly just want some reprints to help drive down prices *eyes cavern of souls* I'll more than likely pick up one of the precons maybe even keep it together.
you know what would be interesting to see for next year's commander product, instead of like tribal, or mechanic based decks; they do archtypes like a voltron deck, control etc...
Outside of getting a Serra card, I was disappointed when I learned this year is PW themed. I may change my mind if the options are interesting. Getting a Jace PW commander (unlikely) would be amazing to switch up with JVP. Or Kiora. But ultimately. I prefer Legendaries as generals. And it's always which legends from past lore we get that draws me most to these products as a Vorthos. It'd be nice if they didn't focus as much as mechanics and having a cycle and just went with themes like Sea Monsters, or plane-themed decks. Like having some Devotion cards in a Theros themed one, having Ninjas and Samurai or Soratami in a Kamigawa one, etc. So what if the mechanics don't balance. In a real EDH deck, we mix and match planes, mechanics, themes, etc.
