Hey all, longtime lurker of the site and finally decided to make an account! I haven't found a thread about my favorite legendary from the new set, so I decided to start one! Still brewing with her and I'm mulling over making her the head of my Vorel alt win con deck. On the other hand, I've half a mind to revamp my old mono blue Patron moonfolk tribal with Tats at the helm. Wondering if anyone else has found some dank tech with her that isn't obvious?
I'm trying to use her as a land denial strategy with stuff like Overburden, Mana Vortex, Mana Breach, Sunder + Manabond. Just threw it together last night and have some playtesting to do.
The value she provides is pretty extreme though. She's received some attention, but I think she's flying way under the radar right now. Even at 5 mana she seems a bit broken to me. I probably won't keep my build for very long as I hate UG goodstuff, but I wanted to try the denial strat and see how it performed.
Yeah, I'm excited to build around Tatyova, too, but I'm finding it difficult because of self-imposed restrictions. I was talking her up to a friend and said that with her card advantage, I'd feel comfortable making a really low budget build and then running it against normal decks. At first I thought a 25-50 cents per card limit, but then I found that things like Sakura-Tribe Elder are higher than that. I'm still trying to figure out how to define budget. I really do like Elfhame Sanctuary with her - she's one of the few commanders I could see it working with - she essentially removes the "skip your draw step" drawback and gets even more card advantage.
I've got Tatyova in my Bant deck, and recently had a game with both Tatyova and Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar in play. It was pretty bonkers, and one curves into the other pretty well, too.
I brewed a deck recently (link in sig) and I have to say that I didn't expect it to be so powerful. I am missing some cards, more notably amulet of vigor and laboratory maniac . If you leave her unchecked she can get insane value. Retreat to coralheim + llanowar scout + cloudstone curio and a land is great
There's a four card combo with Tatyova that lets you pull any basic land from your deck and drop it into play:
Tatyova, Benthic Druid + Retreat to Coralhelm + Scouting Trek + any creature that can tap to drop a land onto the battlefield from your hand, such as Sakura-Tribe Scout or Walking Atlas. With the three permanents on the battlefield you cast Scouting Trek to put all basic lands in your deck on top of your library. Then you tap your land dropper to drop a land card from your hand, drawing a card (which will be a basic land), gaining a life, and untapping your land dropper with the landfall trigger. Repeat until you suddenly have a stupid amount of life and land in play.
I know the combo is a bit of a stretch, but each of the individual pieces already generate a lot of value with Tatyova.
Obvious option would be a Stax deck with Crucible of Worlds and Exploration effects. But she could really be just another Simic goodstuff Commander.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
Dreamscape Artist Manabond - you can dump your hand every turn to refill back up, omg! Burgeoning, Summer Bloom, etc, all the extra land cards Life from the Loam - make sure you play all the cycling lands in Simic colors so that you can also use this card to do extra draw
..yeah I'm going to have to make a deck, too sweat to pass up.

Since Totyova triggers for a land entering the battlefield under your control, then all of these cards would work to trigger her ability. If Tatyova triggered only on you playing a land, then that would be different.
So yeah, anything that puts lands into play or gives you additional land drops would be an auto-include, and cards that trigger when you draw cards (Psychosis Crawler), when you gain life (Well of Lost Dreams), or both (Alhammaret’s Archive).
Last week I literally played all the lands from my deck in round 7, and killed the temple with two uses of Rude Awakening in order to search for Kamahl and use him to pump my lands. I love how every green ramp spell cantrips even on late game.

wouldn't this just end up being a weaker gitrog at that point?
You get blue's tax effects, bounce effects (which are a huge deal in this deck), and untappers, you get a few Daze-like cards to bounce your own lands, and you get some extra landfall cards, including everything to Kynaios and Tiro's infinite combo (Retreat to Coralhelm and Sakura-Tribe Scout or Skyshroud Ranger), though said combo has a lot fewer spouts in two colors. (e.g., Emeria Angel, Cosi's Ravager, Omnath, Locus of Rage) You'll have to just work with green's spouts and, um, Hedron Crab?, I guess...

Threw together a deck with just every ramp spell in my c/u box and I'm already liking it enough to put some effort into it. Fetches are obviously really strong, so in go Crucible and LFtL. Anything that gives extra land drops, Burgeoning. I hadn't thought of Manabond but it may be a serious consideration.
As far as winning the game goes, I just threw in some extra turn spells and let it work itself out, and it did. It's a pretty generic U/G deck, you can probably put whatever you want at the top end and it'll work fine. Really depends on what you want to be playing (and the kind of people you play with), but anything from Lab Man to infinite turns to Dramatic/Scepter to just green beats seems achievable.
My personal takeaway was that The Great Aurora is awesome in this deck. With every ramp spell getting you twice as many cards that count for Aurora as usual, my number was a good bit more than double my opponents' when I cast it. I'm confident it's not optimal by any means, but I love that card and I'm sure someone out there will love it in this deck too.
The Great Aurora almost made the cut in mine, but so did a lot of other things. Tatyova is incredibly strong.
Excuse me, but how does that work again?
Also, while we're here, what does a "benthic druid" do? Manage algae and coral and anemones?

She reminds me of Gitrog, only with Blue. People are definitely underestimating her right now. As if it needed an explanation why any deck is better with Blue.
The strongest I can think of is probably some sort of Palinchron finisher, with or without Lab Maniac. Infinite turns is also available in these colors. Pretty easy to find the strongest win conditions in the format though. Unlike Gitrog, you could literally do anything you wanted.
With effects that let you put more than one land per turn into play Abundance is pretty good.
(Abundance is also very good with Sylvan Library which you should run in any green deck )
Anyhow, I was also extremely excited about Tatyova when she was first spoiled but now after thinking about a deck for her I think that she will get removed pretty often, no?
I mean even an unexperienced player will realise how powerful her abilites are.
Which means the we a) have to dedicate a lot of deck space to cards that are protecting her or b) cast her only on a combo turn.

From my gameplay experience so far:
Most players tend to underestimate her abilities and in 4 player pod there are often many other targets to consider. If your opponents are like this you can safely play her on turn 5 unprotected.
Ramping allows to play tatyova a turn (or two) earlier. In this way removal will be less prevalent (unless you are playing in supper cutthroat metas)and you will have the chance to equip her with boots or keep a counterspell
Playing Tatyova a couple of turns later when you have already set up some protections.

You're in blue. Even more, most builds are going to want to vomit lands everywhere and draw half the deck, meaning things like Thwart and Foil synergize with her, and much of the time you'll have mana for other forms of countermagic as well.
Also, while we're here, what does a "benthic druid" do? Manage algae and coral and anemones?
wat.
Tatyova wouldn't work with The Great Aurora, since she wouldn't see the lands come out.

It's not that Tatyova draws you a million cards off The Great Aurora.
It's that Tatyova, by nature of her ability, makes sure that the number of things in play + the number of cards in hand is very high for you, compared to your opponents, because all your lands and ramp spells go +1 at minimum.
Anyhow, I was also extremely excited about Tatyova when she was first spoiled but now after thinking about a deck for her I think that she will get removed pretty often, no?
Players who get to 5 mana and immediately play Tatyova will get punished. Play her like Angry Omnath, wait until you have some extra lands to drop or fetches to crack before you play her. Playing lands doesn't use the stack so if she resolves, you're pretty sure to at least get one card.
It always sucks if your Commander gets removed but if you can manage to get a couple cards before she does, it sucks a lot less. The deck should ramp enough that re-casting her is also less of a problem than it is for other decks.

Replace Scouting Trek with Simic Growth Chamber and you just draw your entire deck. At which point I assume you can win on the spot somehow....
