So I've got a few Sagas from Dominaria and they seem cool enough to want to run, potentially good enough to be worth running in the right circumstances, and new/different enough to want to at least try out, but since they are such a new card concept they are a little hard to evaluate and compare to existing cards. I'm wondering what other people's experiences or thoughts are on the various Sagas, and if anyone has thought of a good place to run them.
Uncommons Chainer's Torment - I don't think I would play a spell with "Each opponent loses 2 life, you gain 2 life" with Rebound, nor would I play a card that created a large Horror token at the cost of half my life total. The combination of the two doesn't do it for me either. Unless you plan on comboing this with Tainted Sigil or Children of Korlis, I don’t see this really seeing any play in EDH circles.
Song of Freyalise - With the first two chapters essentially being Cryptolith Rite, there is at least some pedigree to this kind of effect (even though it obviously pales in comparison to Earthcraft, but whatever). The interesting thing is that those two chapters very much set you up for chapter III where you get a mini Overrun effect. This one seems like it sets up nicely for decks that don't mind overextending, but I worry that it telegraphs the alpha strike too much.
The Eldest Reborn - I actually like this one a lot. It affects the board immediately, nets you a lot of card advantage, and then leaves you with something sweet at the end. For pure value, this one seems pretty good and actually worth the 5 mana to cast it.
The Flame of Keld - This is obviously not made for EDH at all, however if you running an aggro mono-red deck that likes to empty its hand, there may be a reason to include this. I would think that a good case could be made to pack Strionic Resonator for a lot of the Sagas, but copying chapter II and III here seems particularly saucy.
Triumph of Gerrard - A deck that cares about the +1/+1 counters will like the effect in chapter I and II especially given that it only costs 2 mana, but chapter III seems just underwhelming enough to make me wonder if it is worth it.
Rares Fall of the Thran – A 6-mana Armageddon isn’t that bad of a deal if that is the kind of effect you are looking for, but Chapter II and III seem self-defeating of the original purpose of nuking everyone’s lands. However, coupled with some targeted graveyard removal that affects only your opponents (such as Leyline of the Void, chapter III on Phyrexian Scriptures, or format all-star Mudhole…) you can make sure your opponents get nothing back.
The Antiquities War – Obviously, in a deck that reasonably expects to hit an artifact in the top five cards at any given time this could be really good. Any deck that already wants Tezzeret the Seeker or Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas will maybe want this if you are planning on winning via damage, although there is some danger in trying to project three turns into the future for when you are going to alpha strike. It’s tricky to use, but perhaps there is enough value in chapters I and II that it doesn’t matter.
The Mending of Dominaria – There is some good value to be had in Chapter I and II, especially in the late game where a green deck might need to recover from multiple Wrath effects and mana is likely plentiful. On the flipside of this, chapter III seems interesting in conjunction with Fetchlands, or cards like Harrow or Scapeshift to really ramp your mana (because why Genesis Wave for 10 when you can G-Wave for 20+). With all the possibilities, I’m wondering if this is just too slow to matter or is the long-term value worth it.
The Mirari Conjecture – Like a lot of the other better Sagas, this will net you a card in both chapter I and II, but I think the main value is in chapter III where if you are set up correctly you can conceivably reap tons of benefit by copying multiple spells. I’m unsure of exactly where such a card would fit in (especially given that you need to have the time/opportunity to play a 5-mana card at Sorcery speed), but there seems to be enough spellslinger decks out there that are looking for a way to close out a game in a flurry of spells.
Mythic Rare History of Benalia – I’m still trying to figure out how this became Mythic; I guess that makes sense from a Standard point of view, but in Commander this isn’t going to knock anyone’s socks off. And given that the pump only affects Knights is a bummer. I think this get relegated to Knight Tribal Aryel, Knight of Windgrace decks.
Phyrexian Scriptures – I like this one from a storyline perspective, but from a gameplay perspective it seems a little all over the place. Getting a 4-mana Wrath effect (even one delayed by a turn) seems like it might be okay in a lot of metas, and being able to save one of your own creatures from destruction seems like a nice setup. I’m not a fan of chapter III, but it does have its uses by randomly hosing graveyard recursion shenanigans or comboing with The Mending of Dominaria or Fall of the Thran.
Overall, I kinda found that Sagas to be a really neat idea that seems rather underwhelming at best, and I’m wondering what others think.
Telegraphing your big play is not great, so I think TER and Mending are the best ones. Still kinda expensive.
I would compare them to PWs or the Ascensions. PWs have more flexibility since you likely can use either of the first two abilities early. Ascensions can be big impact cards that you might be able to trigger quickly...but likely build up to them.
I don’t/won’t use any of these in my enchantress deck. I love them in theory. I want them to bring them back randomly (like curses). I just don’t plan on using this group.
Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
When you can manipulate the amount of counters on them like with Hex Parasite or with Proliferation, they become a lot better, keeping them around instead of letting them hit 3.
The only one I'm running is The Antiquities War as it looks like a decent fit in my Sydri Vehicles deck, the fact that it's telegraphed sucks a bit but if not dealt with it could end games.
The Mirari Conjecture is more hit-or-miss. Picking up two sweet cards then going off on chapter 3 with a whole slew of spells will be really good, but is more difficult to set up for enough to make it worth it. Unlike Mending, this one requires a bit of set up and can end up being dead some non-zero amount of the time but I think the upside is going to be worth it in decks on the more casual end of the spectrum.
Phyrexian Scriptures curves into Fall of the Thran, which is a flavor win. You just want to play it turn 5, so turn 6 it blows up dudes and Fall blows up lands, then you stack the triggers turn 7 to nuke your opponents yards before Thran tries to bring back lands.
Even without gy hate, Fall of the Thran is still spicy. Knocking mana bases back to 4 without rocks is nice, especially since it takes them awhile to get it back. Very easy to break that symmetry with all the usual ways, but opens up one sided grave hate as another option.
The Mending gives you a ton of value. It's definitely going in Sidisi, and any deck with G where I mill myself. Getting creatures back (or psuedo drawing them) then getting all my lands? Awesome. Only bad if I'm going reanimator and somehow need the yard to stay there for more than 3 turns.
Eldest reborn is slow but value town. Bonus tech, stick it in W/B/x enchantress and randomly get grave pact triggers when it does with Starfield of Nyx or Opalescence on the field. I mean, its not a combo, just more goodies from cards you already run. Oh, and Starfield will bring it back!

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
I think Song of Freyalise may end up being good in Muldrotha. The ramp it provides may be pretty good, and bringing it back multiple times will overcome probably the biggest drawback. Seems solid enough for me. Not at all game breaking, but definite value.
I rated three of them 1, seven of them 2, and four of them 3. I'm surprised Song of Freyalise is so highly rated.
It's like Cryptolith Rite but its chapter three means you have to get on with it.
Get big mana, make lots of creatures with it and do other stuff, then swing with the chapter three effect while also putting down a couple other anthems. It telegraphs your plan so hard but if used correctly it shouldn't hurt too bad if it's removed the upkeep before its chapter three; you still had all that free mana.
Song of Freyalise in Ghave. Ghave needs big mana. Two turns of that could win me a game prior to the third lore counter anyway. The third is obviously good, and not having to hold up mana for that overrun effect is nice. I'm hesitant about this one to be honest. It could be a glass cannon, and I'm playtesting it with that being the expectation.
Fall of the Thran in Bad Bruna. MLD is something I've not played a lot of, and if/when I add some more big mana lands, this will probably get taken out. For now, it's nice to slow down any opponents who might roll too quickly. Again, this may not work as well as I envision, but it's worth testing.
I've also thought about The Eldest Reborn slotting into Thraximundar. I haven't yet slotted it in, but I may. Partially for some sweet Bolas flavour, partially because its great boardwide disruption which is precisely what the deck wants to do. I actually think its probably the most well-rounded of the sagas.
Phyrexian Scriptures - I really like it flavour wise, and I'm a fan of the artwork too (actually, of all of them - they're reminiscent of a tapestry, which is a cool vibe). I could see it fitting into a Voltron Glissa, the Traitor build nicely. Not sure where else it would see play, but it could do well in that specific build.
EDIT - I should clarify that I've yet to actually draw or play any of them, so I'm open to feedback. I don't expect amazing things from them without building around them, and that's probably best done with a commander like Atraxa, Praetors' Voice or Chisei, Heart of Oceans.
My Promo was The First Eruption.....needless to say i did not play it.
As far as EDH goes both Green ones are easy slots into lots of my decks (w/ green of course). lots of the other ones need you to have a theme or certain build to get full value out of them
Most of them are pretty poor in this format, but there are a few that are at least worth considering, though even these aren't crazy bombs.
The Antiquities War does dig very deep if you're in an artifact deck, and the third verse can get a good hit in if you've prepared. That said, a bunch of vanilla beaters isn't that great in EDH, and it takes two turns to get 2 cards for four mana - by comparison, Dig Through Time sees nearly as many, gets you two cards straight away, isn't limited to one card type, and will usually be at least as cheap as this, if not cheaper.
Song of Freyalise has a very strong ability on the first two verses, but they you lose that ability to get a minor buff to your creatures. That said, there is room in the format for a third two mana enchantment that lets your creatures tap for mana, especially as one of them is getting a bit pricey.
Fall of the Thran is MLD which is a powerful effect, especially if you can make the second and third verses asymmetric. On the other hand, you're in white, so you can get two 4 mana MLDsorceries, so this looks disctincly less impressive.
The Eldest Reborn does a lot, but it's very slow to do so and your opponents chose what they lose. Probably too slow, but it could have some use in a graveyard-centric deck like Geth, Lord of the Vault or Chainer, Dementia Master. Really wish it were even one mana less though.
The Mending of Dominaria is another Splendid Reclamation effect, which is always a good thing, with a couple of Raise Deads attached, which is OK but nothing amazing and graveyard shuffle, which is very variable in value. Unfortunately, many of the decks that most want the third verse effect, such as Titania, Protector of Argoth or The Gitrog Monster tend to run a pretty low creatrue count so the first two verses will wiff too often (if it was "permanent" instead of "creature", this would be a much better card). And even though verse three is strong, it seriously telegraphs itself, so is much more vulnerable to disruption than Splendid Reclamation
Phyrexian Scriptures is probably the best - a 4 mana Duneblast with suspend 1 is a good card, and asymmetric grave hate is a nice bonus. Unfortunately, it can be disrupted by enchantment removal and often if there's something in play that needs killing, it needs killing now. Still having another option alongside Languish for those who want more cheap black wraths than just Toxic Deluge and can't afford a Damnation is a good thing. Special mention to the synergies with Atraxa: not only do you get to blow up the board on the turn you play it, but she proliferates the counter on her too.
The Mirari Conjecture has some power but is a bit too awkward for me. Much like Mending the limitation on card types is too constraining. If the first two verses could get either spell type, I'd like it a lot more, but there's going to be plenty of situations where you're not getting much for casting it until the third verse, even if it can do a lot if it gets there. And that's quite an if for a format like this.
It seems that the evaluations here are more or less on the same wavelength from most; they're playable but not breakable (in most cases), and are also a really obvious threat, so have limited use or limited power.
Has anyone had a chance to playtest any yet? I've slotted but not drawn, so can't feedback at all. I'd love to hear some reviews from actual gameplay.
Honestly if you are speaking from a non budget standpoing my thoughts is that almost all of them are lacklust limited / standard cards at best. Most of what they do just does not compete with a legacy card pool.
I would be hard pressed to find one of them that I could not come up with a better card replacement to run over it. I think their issue is twofol being 1) enchantments are hard to abuse in this format and 2) they give slow value over time. Tie it all up in the fact that most of these cards seem designed for limited and maybe standard and I just don't see any of them being all that great.
If you are playing on a budget, play whatever you have and can. I think a few of them "can" be played but I dont think any of them are ideal to be played in this format.
Honestly, I find all of them to be too telegraphed. Basically they're too slow and may perform at wrong turns when left alone and when manipulated with, requires too much resources (even in decks that already run said manipulation before Sagas) for most (if not all) their effects to be worth it - you're usually better of playing all the similarly-costed cards with those effects themselves.
That being said, I do run a creature-cardless Freyalise deck that's always on the lookout for decent noncreature cards (which aren't very common with newer sets) and I will be letting the entire deck down if Song of Freyalise doesn't make it into the deck, especially when I do run Cryptolith Rite in the deck, even if I suspect I would value the permanency of Rite a whole lot better (I'll run both, just saying I foresee Song being a lot less useful than Rite because of the telegraphing I need to do).
I think Song of Freyalise is by far the most playable in EDH. You do telegraph the alpha strike but its basically free because of the keywords that get stapled onto the creatures. Ive been meaning to jam it into my elf/ token decks as it seems to be a good fit there.

It depends though. As someone already mentioned, Phyrexian Scriptures ends up being a better Damnation in Atraxa, since it hits the first two chapters the turn you cast it, spares your commander and any artifact creatures you run, and then later nukes your opponents yards for good measure. It would obviously be weak against artifact creature decks, but otherwise its an upgrade from almost every wrath. Most aren't going to be that spicy, but you never know what synergies will be printed.

That dictates a very specific commander, and that you are sticking that commander. I would say that its narrow enough I would still call it worse than a wrath effect in that case because it assumes you are not eating a poo sandwich that game. Also, that is a 4 color deck.... I cant remember the last time I ran or saw someone else run Wrath of God or Damnation in this format because..... for the most part they are not good enough for this game. I would still call this card worse than them because if your commander is not in play and you need a wrath now its REALLY BAD.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
That’s fair, but also my Sydri, Galvanic Genius artifacts matter deck really likes Phyrexian Scriptures. I also use Damnation but Scriptures has been a one-sided wipe with upside, albeit slightly telegraphed.
Uncommons

Fall of the Thran is MLD which is a powerful effect, especially if you can make the second and third verses asymmetric. On the other hand, you're in white, so you can get two 4 mana MLD sorceries, so this looks disctincly less impressive.
Has anyone had a chance to playtest any yet? I've slotted but not drawn, so can't feedback at all. I'd love to hear some reviews from actual gameplay.

Modern:
RG Titanshift. A deck made of cards too stupid for EDH.
Retired: Lots. More than I feel you should suffer through or I should type out.
Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
