Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
I guess because we think of moregeneric versions of this effect, I'd never thought of it as a zombie thing, but, wow, three different zombie-specific versions of it. (Though, appropriately enough, you don't gain life from the zombie versions.) Nor did I ever think of it as such an old ability, even though I own a copy of all three of these cards. (And yes, I know, Mirrodin Besieged gave us Massacre Wurm.)
I play a lot of token decks. If there's a zombie tribal theme, all of these are going in.

It's generally been okay when I've played it, but pales in comparison to things like the recently printed Beast Whisperer and other things of that nature.
Ancestor of Vizier of the Menagerie.
While the snek only reveals info to yourself, costs half mana and fixes mana for you (for whatever reason), this is still a good card.
Last time i've played it, it was included in one of those Open House decks, teaching a friend of mine how to play MTG. Of course i ran into the usual problem with overcosted support cards - i didn't get to do anything with it the turn i played it. The turn after it felt great going to town with the whole engine glued to a big body, though.
If i had a G fatso deck like Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma, Surrak, the Hunt Caller or maybe even Yeva, Nature's Herald, i could see myself including it, if Vizier of the Menagerie wasn't enough to do the job.
Other than the effect i'm always a bit cautious with revealing my top deck, as that's a lot of info to give away. Hence, i chose Precognition Field over Future Sight for my mono-U deck. Oracle of Mul Daya combined with a ton of shuffling in Omnath, Locus of Rage is simply amazing though!
Personally I hate any card that reveals the top card of my deck. It makes it much easier for your opponents to play around what you have.
I guess on the plus side, this goes best in a pretty midrange creature stompy deck, though, where concealing cards usually isn't as much of a concern. You probably aren't running a lot of answers or combo pieces that are best kept concealed.
it's a pretty funky card i think. one of those cards where players newer to EDH tend to over-evaluate, and more experienced players underestimate.
I for one would immediately ignore it, and then die to it 4 or 5 rounds later just through combat damage (if i haven't combo-ed out or killed it unintentionally with a board wipe).
I have it in a few decks where I both want the redundancy for vizier and have the ability to cast this earlier than turn 7 reliably. Basically, just decks with mostly creatures and plenty of ramp. He's a source of CA in creature heavy decks and sort of combos with Oracle and Courser of Kruphix, but he costs 7 and is a removal target (he'll eat removal if a player thinks you'll be getting a lot of value from him, and he'll eat removal for being a fatty with trample. Too often hell launguish in your hand, or you'll tap 7 and he dies immediately, or you just don't get enough creatures on top of your library. Since 7 Mana is getting to win the game terroritory, you need to get more out of him than a fatty that generates incidental card advantage. You need a critical mass of creatures in your deck and some library manipulation to ensure that you can get multiple creatures per turn from his ability when you untap with him, or at least one per turn if they are expensive or you cast something from your hand. You also want cost reducers or a ton of ramp so that he drops earlier. His place is in G/x creature heavy value decks, whereas Vizier, being a 4 drop, can fit in decks with a moderate creature count and put in work generating value without necessarily hitting something every turn.

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!

Yeah, I'm always divided about including this guy in (and Oracle of Mul Daya) in Animar for this reason. Obviously I'll always include the snek first, though having the ability essentially attached to a Duskdale Wurm is nice if you're in the mood for an alpha strike. Or if your sweeps are damage-based, which in Animar it probably is. Still, something must be said for, between this, Garruk's Packleader, and Elemental Bond, being able to just vomit out your library. (Though again, snek is stronk.)

His bleeder effect is ok, in that it's only one opponent and you gain no life from it. But with Tombstone Stairwell in play, or Carrion Feeder, or Grimgrin, Corpse-Born he does some great work.
The buff and combat ability are also relevant, although I don't necessarily focus on making my zombies enormous as they don't need to be.
