Wait, why would Lorthos target if you didn't pay the eight mana? That seems...very backwards.
On triggered abilities like Lorthos' which give you the option to pay a cost to receive an effect, you don't chose whether or not to pay said cost until the ability resolves. However, as with any ability in Magic, you chose its targets when it is first put on the stack.
And not just for procs. You can also use her with a personal favorite card of mine in Derevi, Glare of Subdual. Or just with the older Tims.
And then you get the funny stuff, like having Aura Shards target a god or an unstoppable death machine, or targeting a Sadbot just to yoink it so you get the cantrip.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
This card is messed up. I've got got by it so many times. I should play more creatures, but still, it's eerily similar to The Abyss when someone points it at you.

This card is messed up. I've got got by it so many times. I should play more creatures, but still, it's eerily similar to The Abyss when someone points it at you.
I play Arena in my Zurgo Helmsmasher fight club deck. It's far from the best fight effect the deck runs, but the best actual fight cards are unfortunately in green. On the other hand, red has most of the not-quite-fight cards, like Tahngarth, Talruum Hero and Living Inferno. With these pseudo-fight cards, my creature deals damage first, then your creature deals damage. Because it's all one ability, that distinction normally doesn't matter... until my creature has wither or infect. If my creature's damage is inflicted in the form of -1/-1 counters, your creature gets smaller before dealing damage back to mine. (With the actual fight keyword, the damage from both creatures is dealt simultaneously, so this trick doesn't work.)
As for Arena, even though it taps your creature, you can choose an already-tapped creature for the effect (as can your opponent), which is often relevant; for example, attack with a creature and make it fight their only creature, so it can't chump block. Also, your opponent cannot choose a creature with shroud or hexproof, since it's your Arena that targets the two creatures. Something I have actually done before: attack with Tahngarth equipped with Blight Sickle, activate his ability to kill a 5/5, activate Arena to take out the defending player's remaining creature, hit for 5 damage.
I tried Arena once. When the opponent got out Emrakul, The Promised End it sucked. The clause of the opponent choosing their creature and also no tap for mana kills the card for me.
Just make sure you count it as a spell when deck building. Fun in Traxios as a form of removal in colorless, and Hapatra (sneks)

The Meaning of Life: "M-hmm. Well, it's nothing very special. Uh, try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations"
Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
Not a card I've used. Requires a lot to work at all - they need to not have disposable creatures OR a fat creature OR a deathtouch creature OR instant-speed removal OR a pump, and really you want them to only have 1-2 creatures for maximum effect. You need to have something sufficiently fat yourself. And then it's a land drop and 3 mana to do it, and it only affects one player.
On the flip side, it CAN lock decks like mizzix out of the game pretty easily. But I doubt I'd play it in hardly any decks tbh. Too many fail cases and too expensive.
But all the same it's true despite being unintuitive. The new way only works due to setting up a delayed triggered ability.
Reflexive* triggered ability. Introduced in Amonkhet, IIRC. A little bit more complicated stack, but much more intuitive in normal play.
For the sake of exert, yes, and I always forget the name but it's damn fine design technology.
I'm assuming the name means it triggers itself. (Like the reflexive property of equality, a=a, or the reflexive voice in grammar.)
Arena has one downside: Opponent's choice. This isn't so bad, Grave Pact exists after all, but the difference is, I can easily trigger Grave Pact over and over on the same turn.

Not really anything more to say. Great for morphs, but useless without your deck being morph themed.

I've had decks that had a decent number of morphs, but you'd really better be an all-in morph deck to play this. Guess it depends how many cards qualifies as a "theme".
Having a few morphs can be good even w/o any direct synergy, simply because the more morphs you have, the harder it is to figure out which one it is, or play around it correctly.

Fun card but hard to justify building around. Good in kaseto, blind seer, etc.
