I'm building a Jori En, Ruin Diver deck with which to teach magic to a brand new player.
It's going to be a pretty straightforward deck that plays a lot of mana rocks and cheap spells (cantrips especially) and accumulates card advantage, but I'm not quite sure how it's supposed to win.
I'm putting in Psychosis Crawler, Inferno Titan, and Frost Titan, but I'm looking for more more suggestions for things that can actually lead to a win in a deck like this without being too difficult to pilot. Do I just throw in a handful of dragons?
The deck is going to have a minor wizard tribal theme.
You can try to wedge in the untap'ed ramp effects to help sequence out a 2nd spell with Jori, as in izzet signet or mind stone followed by some other play that uses the mana-rock, so Jori can cantrip.
Jori is a good choice if your buddy is only wanting to play izzet. Most izzet generals dictate what the deck does, and Jori does a good job of looking insignificant/non-threatening/non-combo orientated.
As to the main point... I play Jori En, Ruin Diver. I agree she's not necessarily a good starter general, as most of my wins are from playing a lot of spells and killing people with Sphinx-Bone Wand. And cantrips don't really capture the imagination in the same way as a big fatty might
But if you're married to the general for whatever reason (maybe they chose it?), I'll just say some things about how the deck tends to work for me...
Play lots of cantrips
defend with things like Aetherize and Evacuation
wincons are the various things that do damage on spell-casting like Guttersnipe, Gelectrode and most of all Sphinx-Bone Wand. These especially in conjunction with cantrips, Spellweaver Volute, and my personal favorite, Flame Jab. I personally don't think this is too hard, once you read Sphinx-Bone Wand it's pretty easy to see where this is going, and you don't really have to "storm out" or anything, can just rack up damage over turns.
Other wins are Rise from the tides (especially with Quicken), Mob Rule and Insurrection. And if you're feeling saucy, you could easily add Clone Legion or other big flashy spells.
Thanks guys, you've given me a lot to think about. I'm going to build the deck, but I think I'm also going to take your advice and build a more straightforward cast-big-creatures deck, maybe based on Surrak Dragonclaw, to get her started.
