Because what the format needed was the banning of the best artifact mana and the reintroduction of prime time, sylvan primordial, sundering titan and prophet of kruphix...........
I've been playing edh on mtgo for a long time, and this change will kill the format for me. I played when a lot of those cards were legal and I can predict that it will go right back to UGx decks being uncontested again...barely got to enjoy the respite from Leovold.
All Wizard's is doing is introducing the 1v1/French Commander banlist to their online client. Multiplayer and 1v1 have different play experiences and metas. The world isn't ending. If you want to play with the multiplayer banlist than play in multiplayer.

It's not quite the French list.
Cards banned on MTGO not banned in Duel Commander:
(Plus all Ante cards*)
* Not available in MTGO anyway
** Only banned as commander
A number of these differences are because Duel Commander starts at 20 life while MTGO's Commander starts at 30, and MTGO's banlist will apply to multiplayer games as well as 1v1.
If you read the article, it says that the banlist is made developed for 1v1 play at 30 life, but will also be enforced for multiplayer. It also says that the list is ONLY for MTGO, and not for paper play, as they respect the RC's decisions. On MTGO, the 'social contract' is much different, as you will often not know your opponents personally, and rarely play the same player again.
At the end of the day, this is only for MTGO, and not paper play.
The question that remains is: How long will it take, and what conditions need to be met, before Wizards decides to boot the RC and enforce their own list?
Couldn't believe there isn't already a thread about this. Wizards is making sweeping changes to the banned list.
Not only are there some weird new additions to the banned list, like Moat and Humility.....some pretty big things are unbanned.

Overall, I agree with the changes, as this might lead to better play online. I do see a dominance of UGx decks with the unbanning of Prophet of Kruphix, Primeval Titan, and Leovold, Emissary of Trest, but some of the better commanders at using these cards were banned, especially Derevi, Empyrial Tactician. Recurring Nightmare seems a little egregious, but may be fine without Survival of the Fittest.
I am actually pretty happy with bans of Humility, Bazaar of Baghdad, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale, Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, and Doomsday, and perhaps a few others. Humility in particular hoses so many decks so thoroughly, and I would rather cards like Torpor Orb and Cursed Totem see play.
At the end of the day, this is only for MTGO, and not paper play.
