I've been looking into this as I've had a Leovold since C2 dropped and have been wanting to sleeve up a deck for him. Problem is my playgroup is pretty diverse when it comes to power level and I'd hate to upset some people with going overboard with wheel/box effects. What's the end game look like? I've seen a few Leo elf balls but I don't really see anyway to interact besides clogging up the board with 1/1's (maybe Door of Destinies and Coat of Arms + elf lords?). Do you run any bigguns' like Craterhoof Behemoth?
Always difficult walking the line between casual and semi-spiky
Wort was one of my more effective monored control generals (basically ignoring the green half). I had several games end to a copied Whims of the Fates where I put all of my permanents into one pile each time and luckedskilled out.

Favourite Deck: Elves (Modern & Legacy)
Standard: New Perspectives Combo
Modern: GW Hatebears | Death and Taxes | Eldrazi and Taxes | Abzan Liege | Abzan Company
Commander: The Gitrog Monster (Combo) | Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper (Control) | RIP Leovold Sultai (Elvestorm, no unfair locks) | Mono G (Yisan or Titania)
Tiny Leaders: Too many decks to keep track of
Pauper: RIP UR Drake | Mono B | GBx Goodstuff | Jund "Melira"
I have more of a tendency to run less popular commanders than different concepts for commanders, but some decks I've built previously off of the top of my head:
Hythonia the Cruel - My list was voltron. It was fairly bad, but that was most because of how mana intensive the deck could get. When it did get going, it did decently but getting behind could be crippling.
I run a Melek storm deck, but it's got Runechanter's Pike as backup. One time, I cast Time Spiral with Pike on Melek, and before I moved to my combat phase, I had also equipped Melek with Sword of Feast and Famine and gotten 17 instant/sorcery cards into my graveyard, for a 21/6 first strike pro black, pro green commander.
I think this fits here, but I just recently built a Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker deck...without a single combo. It abuses ETB effects, but when I told people I dont run any combos, not even Zealous Conscripts, I got a couple weird looks and a couple, "But its Kiki-Jiki, why wouldnt you run combos?" To this I reply that I want to be able to play my commander without him getting murdered the second he hits the board. So if I advertise no combos, I have to stick to my word.
My two obscure ones I've done are Derevi Bird Tribal and Astral Slide (cycle theme) Zur. I ripped the Zur deck off from SCG's 'Commander VS' and it is a BLAST to play.
My Freyalise creature(card)-less deck. When I consolidated all the playstyles I wanted to play, most of them fit comfortably in my multicolor decks, so that gave me some creative space to use for my mono-colored decks (by then I also already divided the color usage equally among all my decks). One of my criteria was to make sure I played all 5 planeswalkers from the 2014 Commander set since that was the only time I bought the entire cycle of decks and I figured that since their special point was being able to be used as Commanders, I'll better use one of them as the Commander. Ryusei already took up my R slot (as the technical first card I owned since I started playing the game at the Champions of Kamigawa Prerelease) (plus Daretti, while powerful was a bit too straightforward for my liking). So I was left with Freyalise (due to color usage) and was wondering what creative themes I could come up with it (which obviously meant not Elves).
Then I figured out since the Commander wasn't a creature, might as well try a token-build that has no creature-cards, double-points for being in the color best known for its creatures.
It's no masterpiece (in fact it's probably my weakest deck, since outside of the token swarm plan is either relying on The Great Aurora for an advantage or Helix Pinnacle to actually work out with Cryptolith Rite and the (Eldrazi Spawn/Scion) tokens, but once I lost a game from being hit too many times by a Lord of the Void and when I asked why it kept attacking me only (despite posing no threat), the answer was "Green has the best creatures". I laughed so much it justified the deck's continued existence (also helped I actually won once when it was down to 1v1 and I just slapped Eldrazi Conscription onto an Eldrazi Scion with Triumph of the Hordes and won with 1 measly token).
All of these strategies are really cool!
Recently I've been working on a Shu Yun monk tribal deck, it focuses on getting a lot of prowess buffs, and playing aura enchantments to capitalize on all of the non creature synergies monks have. Sometimes it doesn't work the best (it has a lot of consistency issues), but it's been a blast to play so far.
That is actually pretty intriguing idea. I may want to revisit my Marath a bit. Hmm.

I would be really curious to hear about alternate ways to play Edric, Spymaster of Trest aside from take extra turns and use CMC 1 creatures or tribal elves.
Edric dredge is a blast to play. Blue gives you access to a few awesome discard outlets, and you get a few green dredgers. Gravetroll is easy to tutor for. Kessig Cagebreakers is an awesome win-con.
This sounds great idea, do you have decklist somewhere so I could borrow ideas?

I also like Derevi tokens, with cards like Myr Turbine and Squirrel Nest, with Mass Polymorph as a finisher.

I don't have a copy of Diaochan atm, but other than that, that list is an accurate representation of my physical cards.

Not horribly weird concepts, but not necessarily your first thought when you think of those generals.

Schismotivate followed by Rush of Blood both copied via Melek makes fun. It can be a Savage Beating.
