So I've become a bit of a custom card/set designer over the years. I like to think I'm at least sorta decent at it.
And as all "artists" are, their general likes and interests tend to bleed over into what they create, and I feel this is no exception. A primarily limited player may design cards more aimed at limited, a legacy player may push their cards a bit more for legacy, and EDH player at myself tends to design cards that are a bit splashier or more legendary creatures, etc.
Have any of you designed custom cards for EDH? Have any of you actually used them? Be it just some cool flashy rare or mythic that has a neat effect or fills a niche that there just isn't a card already out there for or even an all new legendary creature for you to build around, did you beat Wizards to the punch at giving us a legendary werewolf?
How do you view this? Obviously it is, much like with proxies, something that will vary playgroup to playgroup, and most likely card to card. Some people tend to get a bit overboard and overdesign or push something a bit harder than they should. Would you personally be cool playing with custom cards and sets, sort of accepting them as an unofficial part of the game, what sort of restrictions would you use? What would you look for when it comes to pushing too far or too out there in terms of design? How about color bleeds or breaks? What if flavor can help justify the occasional bend? Would you be interested in facing an all new commander that someone designed either themselves or they found that someone else came up with?
I've seen enough online card design that I flat out refuse to play against custom cards. Even if the custom cards in question are well balanced and interesting, it offers up too much potential for one of the numerous people who doesn't have any concept of how to do it right to play their own custom designs and I have no interest in dealing with that.
If you're in a group that has it figured out, great! Have fun with it. I will not be a part of one of those groups.

It really depends on how powerful the card is and the impact it has. I made tribal lands like one that come I to ply tapped unless you control a creature of the tribe type. A goblin land that taps for B or R.
We have a local league that uses custom legends in the cmdr spot. There is also an entirely custom made commander cube around here that I've played. With the custom legend league each participant designs a new legend and then we draft them so nobody gets the one they designed. I think this sort of use of custom cards is fine because its equal
I like the idea of a custom card that has a very unique effect, that is paired with a very dangerous and detrimental effect. The idea behind granting a slight advantage at great cost sort of thing. Think form of the dragon.
If the card has any relevant power level but does not have an appropriate high cmc or some possible detrimental aspect to it, then I wouldn't really want to play against it, since the card has no actual authentic balancing from the company that has been doing it for over a decade.

And note that, regardless of how balanced it may or may not be, and even regardless of how balanced you feel Wizards' cards are -- the fact is, once you go down the rabbithole of custom creation, there are really pretty much only arbitrary limits on what can be made, which can be uncomfortable to play around since there's no good hard line (is this too far? is this too far?). The only boundary line that doesn't involve group voting or whatnot, tends to be cards that actually exist, or for some groups the physical cards they own.
Personally, I have to say that I wouldn't love playing against custom cards in decks. A new commander, however, would be totally fine and even pretty fun, provided it's balanced and they didn't just try to go degenerate on us right away.

I've been wanting to do a custom commander thing with our little group. I was thinking about doing some type of point-buy system, coming up with the values as a group. Something like, CMC in C = Base Power + Base Toughness, then you could reduce either one for points, or increase the CMC or make it require a color for points. Assign point values for all of the static abilities. Then if someone wanted a particular ability, we would come up with a point total for it.

Yes. I don't want to play in a group that opens that door at all. I agree with you quite a bit but I also diagree with you.
For me it would be, if one person cannot play with custom card they created, no one can. Taht way if all cards are balanced, everyone can play, but if even one card is not, well then no one plays with custom cards.
That's why no one gets to use the legendary they made in my local league. It also helps balance things as no one will make something busted for fear of having to play against it. We do D20 rolls to establish pick order with the caveat that you can't pick your own. Sometimes we add a challenge, like each one is a different color id, or weird tribes, etc. One of the most fun was "missing" legends for characters who never got a card.
Since we are primarily on the subject of custom legends, thought why not share a few?
Any of those seem interesting, get the deck building juices flowing? Too strong?
Have other custom cards I'd love to share if anyone is interested, but as the subject was turned towards legends thought these fit the direction conversation has gone.
If you're okay with group input, I think making custom commanders could work out. Like if it turns out your commander is broken is some way, you work with your group/friends to see if the card can be tweaked to balance it.
