I'll attempt to go through some reasonings (because apparently sleeping at 2am is overrated) for the sake of discussion.
First off, I'll say that Avacyn was an overshot at the time and we could probably unban her. Still annoying as heck though, but there will always be annoying cards. Avacyn would be the poster child of why I hate angels in Magic, if not for the other mentioned feathered b*tch...
DEN got the stick because it was, in our eyes, far too easy to combo with. Department of 'you have blue and any creatures whatsoever? Yeah.' got pretty stale after a bit.
Cyclonic Rift is a bigger offender. Rift turned tables far too readily, far too easily. And it was a fair bit of 'you have blue? Yeah' too. Set everyone else back to a ridiculous degree without actually instantly winning the game, that was the worst. Least, our games have been better since there's not quite the same risk of losing it all instantly AND with one player keeping their stuff. But I digress...
...because the worst offender, by pretty far, is Iona. The only card that instantly can shut down 99% of a deck without even trying. It was usually agreed that when someone monocolored or mostly-one-colored got Iona'd, they'd be free to swipe up their phone, their next drink or whatever, game would go on as though they weren't there, because in pretty much any case they'd be unable to do anything for the rest of the game.
It's one thing to prevent people from doing a thing or two in a game, and limitation makes for fun games sometimes. It's another to completely stop a player from doing anything whatsoever, in a game. And it manages to feel even worse when it's a single card doing so.
This aint your girlfriends meta! This is a man's meta! TURBO META.
