I don't play M:TG much anymore. However, I still want to have 1 commander deck (to keep my nerd cred and when I see my old MTG buddies). I had an Oloro, Ageless Ascetic and an Animar, Soul of Elements commander deck. My Oloro deck was a pillowfort, kinda controlly deck. My Animar deck had only 1 sorcery/instant (the one that lets you play the top card of your library until you hit a non-permanent).
I sold off my Animar deck and all my blue cards from my Oloro deck. I've settled on Orzhov as my colors because I like what they can do. I'm not sure who to go with for my commander and I'm looking for suggestions. To help narrow it down, here are some of my thoughts.
*Thinking about Life Gain synergy; however, I'm concerned with being shut down by Erebos, God of the Dead so if I go with a Commander based on life gain I'd like suggestions on how to stop Erebos from ruining my day
*Not looking for any combo kills, I enjoy controlling and beat down
I find this semi-hilarious that this question is asked coinciding with the reveal of Kambal.
However, yeah, Kambal will probably be the "streamlined" Oloro going forward. It's not a "game-breaking" effect, but in EDH, it can see similar success that it will probably see in 60-card. The format revolves around Playing CreaturesDestroying Creatures and Recurring Creatures. You add a 4 point swing to 2 of the 3. I think the trick will be protecting him long enough to set-up some sort of stax. Stax struggle to get reliably fast kills, and this really is right up that archetypes alley. Trying to remove any of the pieces, outside of creatures of course, triggers. Any opponent trying to wiggle their way out of an emty hand or such, that will trigger.
I do, however, think he'll be hated out to early at multi-player tables to really shine. In 1v1 and French, I think he'll really put up results. Not tier 1, but as I said, he's a streamlined Oloro. Trading a color for half the cost, and also an ability that drains, albeit conditional, is fair. Heck, it allows for an even more versatile mana-base, and that alone should give him a boost. Also, 30 life in French is a much more beatable(?) life total.

*I really like the following cards: Grand Abolisher, Baneslayer Angel, Stoneforge Mystic, and Athreos, God of Passage.
*I'd like a semi-innocuous commander that won't attract too much attention
Just spoiled.
