I know this has been discussed before but I am looking through a few of my decks and I notice that I run Proxies is every single one. Granted they are all card I am running in a different deck but they are still proxies. Now I don;t hate using Proxies, I have even build full Proxy decks to test out the deck before making purchases, I have also build decks for unreleased cards (I had a nin deck the day she was spoiled. Proxied her and build the deck THAT DAY, played it THAT NIGHT, It was good, people liked seeing the deck in action (When i was the only one running nin), and it was tweaked and changed continuously until Nin was finally released.
Thing is I am looking through my Doran deck and see my Proxied Path to exile and Swords to Plowshares Which teh real copies are in my Rafiq deck. Now I could dish out 20 bucks to buy another copy of each. Not a big deal, but then i look at my land base. I can;t go buy anotehr set of the G/W lands. I also cannot buy a Set of R/U or G/U lands in my Riku deck. It all about keeping costs down.
So for those of you who run Proxies, Do you just take a sharpie and write down "Tundra" on a plains or do you actually do full prints like I do? (I perma proxy, but its obvious as there is no such things a legit full art Volcanic Island, and people know I proxy it before hand as I own the card.)
How do you feel about proxies, Would you play someone who has proxies? Would your limits being that the have to own the card even if in another deck? Or you stingy enough to tell them to change the proxy for their actual card? I play with people who are chill and don;t mind proxies, but then there are those who are really stern. I have no issue with proxies so long as they are not proxying a Underground Sea and do not actually own the card to begin with. (Unless they have one in the mail. Like when I was waiting for my Sidisi.)
I have a buddy whos budget is considerably less then mine. He does have a fully built Krenko deck but every other build he has is either 100% proxy or a good portion of it is.
I don't care, nor does anyone else who sits at our table.
My opinion is, this is a game that I enjoy playing with my friends. If the only way my friends are able to play is with proxies so be it.
TLDR: I don't run them, but I don't care that you do.

I see where you are coming from, The point of EDH is to have fun. But still, I had to dish out cash for my deck I would appreciate if opponent did the same. Not eery card obviously as I have said, but if I could proxy my deck 100% its would be very opressive. Yes Money may be an issue for me but I still manage to put money aside strictly for my hobby. I am not saying you should ct out your friend, but maybe suggest he puts some money aside each month to buy an actual deck, He could also get a precon and edit it over time. or even d What I did with my brother and lend him cards you are not using. or even do what My friend did for me to get me back into magic and build him a deck.
Its not a matter of cutting him out, but I feel if you can use 100% proxies, you will never strive to actually get the cards. EDH is an ever changing format due to the introduction of new sets every few months, I understand that prices can get steep. which is why i never buy card for decks I am not building, and if I play a deck and it falls flat or i get tired of Playing it, i dismantle it and now I have those cards for a new deck.
I'm all for proxies. I don't care whether you own the "real" card or not, though I dislike sharpie-plus-basic-land proxies. I don't use them personally for aesthetic reasons and because a few folks that I play with oppose them.
I don't personally run proxies, but I don't mind if others do. I would prefer they actually own the cards somewhere or at least keep things reasonable, though. I've played people before who just use proxies as an excuse to put all the broken mana sources and other old powerful and expensive cards into their deck, and it's left a sour taste in my mouth.
As far as the deck fits the play group's strength i'm mostly fine with proxies. A fully proxed deck might lack flavor for me, but hey, that's just my preference, if you are cool with that, why condone you? After all i want to see how a deck plays out, not how it looks or if you really got that card or not.
I love having the actual cards myself, so all i proxed this far were Tokens for Prossh, Skyraider of Kher - why aren't there any!? - and full art lands (Unhinged Frame) years before the release of the BFZ ones and later swapped them. Much more rewarding too if i can get my hands on Gaea's Cradle somewhen in the future...
Sometimes it's very interesting to see what people come up with for yet to be released Commanders, could see myself do that too, just to see if i might build that deck later on. I wouldn't be pleased but propably okay with upcoming staples as proxies in all decks though. Just wait for them until everyone has access to them too.
You pretty much describe exactly why I use proxies. I have a guy that makes foil alt-art/custom art proxies for me on acetone wiped Magic cards for a few bucks each, which is an excellent alternative from having to buy additional copies of $15 and $20 cards. I own every single card that I play, but don't have 2 copies of things that have gotten really expensive since I first bought them like Cavern of Souls which is around $55 now. I'd rather be able to build more new decks for much less money if I already own a copy of the expensive cards than build fewer decks, spending a fortune on duplicates. I would never buy another copy of Gaea's Cradle just to play it in all of my green decks.
Obviously I'm open about running proxies and tell people that I own the actual card if they have any issue. They are an excellent alternative for running the same, expensive card in more than 1 deck without having to physically swap cards between each list (which I've tried to do before and is a pain). They can also be made to look really cool, which I used to get a custom Space Marine version of Grimgrin that looks amazing.
If you plan on using a proxy long-term as a second copy of a card, you should at least get a good one made on actual card stock. If you're proxying for a deck to test, it helps to print out proxies on paper so you can see what the card does and so can your opponents. Writing with sharpie on an off-color basic land is basically as tacky as you can get and should be an absolutely unacceptable way to proxy a long-term duplicate. I guess it is tolerable for testing purposes, but I'd prefer them to print out a copy, especially with how easy that is to do now.
I used to be a no permanent proxy kind of guy, but a couple of things changed that:
1) My gauntlet of might went to $200. I don't feel like manhandling something that valuable on a regular basis, cards get lost, sleeves catch while shuffling and bend cards, they could also fall on the floor and moving your chair to find it could pin it. Much less stress if I just leave it at home.
2) I started keeping multiple built decks around at a time. I used to only have four decks built at any given time, "changing decks" would mean scavenging parts from other decks at home before EDH night. I recently decided to fill a longbox with decks to make the process easier, and I found oblivion stone is no longer $3. That's like the most staple-ey card you can get in EDH, every deck wants one and playing at a table where nobody has one in their decks is a very different experience. It's a bit unreasonable to shell out $30 for each of my "B-list" decks, but at the same time I don't feel like going through the old ritual of scavenging cards when changing decks. So proxy it is.
As for how I proxy, I usually murder piles of foils until I manage to cleanly peel the foil layer off and get a blank card to sharpie on. It's clean and about the best I can hope for without a printer at home.
I feel people should get the cards or do not play them. Some proxies are really neat (foil original duals) but aside from those I do not see reason to do it. There are plenty of alternatives anyways....

I'm not interested in giving the secondary market my money for Wizard's work, so I don't mind proxies (or counterfeits even so long as no one is trying to defraud a buyer). I just want them to be easily identified as what they're standing in for on the table (so for preference a printed copy of the card).
But if wizards would sell me official proxies via ship on demand or such (say gold border or whatever) I would seriously think about paying them for them.
I love the game and just want to play so do not mind proxy cards. My play group is the same. I have 26 EDH decks and will proxy cards to allow me to run that many decks. Before going to play EDH I will move the real cards into the proxy spots in the decks I am taking. I also use CE/IE cards & Gold Border Cards. I bought some Chinese Proxy cards and use them as stand ins for more expensive cards that I run in a lot of decks. Example have Demonic Tutor in like 8 decks and only have 6 copies so I run a proxy in the other 2. I do not play competitive but in the two stores I play in no one has ever complained.
Me and my group greatly dislike proxies. I put time and money into finding cards for my deck through trades, through packs, buying singles or whatever other means my budget can afford. Its not fair that my time and effort for getting cards goes to waste when somebody shows up with a deck that has 100% of whatever they want in it because they spent 5 minutes going online, printing out copies of cards and putting them in sleeves over basic lands. Yes, it means I only have three to five commander decks build at a time and usually only two or three of them are ever considered "complete" (if thats even possible). But seriously, play with real cards people. Support the company that makes the game by actually buying the product.
I do not like proxies, and neither does anyone in my playgroup. Though we allow them for testing out cards (after all, if the card doesn't work for the deck, buying it would be a waste), once the card has "made the cut", we expect the player to get the real cards.
In my meta there is a 13-year-old girl. She made an effort to get her decks together. She runs no proxies either. But she has managed, through judicious trades and the generosity of others in our playgroup--as well as through saving her babysitting money, etc. and birthday gifts and whatnot--to have a Daretti deck that runs Karn, Ugin, Crucible of Worlds, Blightsteel, etc. And her Omnath, Locus of Rage deck runs every fetchland with either red or green in it. And Crucible. And Scapeshift.
And she's 13.
So yeah, no proxies for our group. If the 13-year-old can get real cards, no one else would have the face to use them!
I used to be a no permanent proxy kind of guy, but a couple of things changed that:

This. With O-stone, Ugin, Phyrexian tower, Ancient Tomb, Crucible of Worlds, and so many other cards skyrocketing in price, it's starting to feel like I can't build the only format I actually enjoy, let alone when I have 3 black decks and only 2 Phyrexian towers.
I think it's the worst for all the colorless removal options, like O-stone and Ugin, that mono-colored decks really need to deal with things like Iona and Swords of X and Y. O-stone is ~$20+. Ugin is ~$20. Karn Liberated is ~$40. All is Dust, the only "cheap" one, is sitting at about $7. I typically run 6 decks at a time, but getting staples is completely out of my budget now.
People running proxies for budgetary reasons, or because they are custom foil or they just like them is their own business. If they are playing and having a good time and NOT contributing to counterfeit sales and being dishonest, then it's just fine. I have a friend with proxies in a cube so that his real cards aren't stolen or damaged. We playtest with proxies before we purchase cards all the time. I don't run proxies, but they have a place in casual play for sure.
I'm not interested in giving the secondary market my money for Wizard's work, so I don't mind proxies (or counterfeits even so long as no one is trying to defraud a buyer). Yea like Bronze border reprints of duals or other restricted list cards. or Gold border of really expensive cards that are legal in EDH. Just so the player base has access to stringer and harder to get cards. They would not be tournament legal (Like how the Unsets are not tournament legal) but it does open teh maket a bt more as people playing EDH can play with more power in their decks, and prices would not fluctuate as much since it is not legal to play cards)
Literally the best proxy situation they could make and also get money for it.
Proxies where I play are not welcomed, not sure why... im not a fan of proxies myself, since it doesnt incentivise the player to buy the actual card and instead it does the opposite. Ive always played less than ideal cards in my edh decks until i get the real card which made me want to upgrade.
I only proxy expensive cards that I already own but are in another deck. (I am contemplating shelling out money for a Mana Crypt but since I would put it in every deck, I'm not going to buy 10. I'll just proxy 9) or more expensive cards that I want to playtest before deciding to buy them or not.
I don't care if someone else plays with proxies for these reasons period. I also don't mind if someone does so for other reasons except when they add really expensive cards to their decks that they obviously have no intention of buying for real. (We would all love all the relevant beta duals in all our multicolor decks, but if you're not willing to pay for them, don't play them. I don't.)

I don't use them. I don't care if other people use them. I've played against decks that proxied things they were planning on getting, decks that proxied things that they were never planning on getting, and decks that proxied everything down to the basic lands. It makes no real difference to me. You can build an obnoxious deck with or without them.
I'm kind of amused by the people saying that they only proxy staple cards that have gotten expensive since they started playing. It's kind of an arbitrary line in the sand.

I think it's just the result of the baseline being you play with the cards you have up to the point where financial issues are getting in the way of that principle. That makes the result arbitrary in the sense that the line where finances constrain differ from person to person, but not in the way of someone simply choosing to allow card A to be proxied and not card B, which would be truly arbitrary.

I proxy for a lot of reasons. If I own a card I will often proxy it into other decks. But sometimes if I feel a card is obnoxious, such as Cyclonic Rift, I run only the legitimate ones. I'll also proxy cards I'm testing and run almost full proxy decks that I'm testing.
With regards to opponents, I don't care as long as the proxies are tasteful. A proxied Damnation should be some other 50c black boardwipe. A proxied beta dual or mana crypt can be something not stupid. Otherwise go nuts.

I use a few proxies, and I don't mind that others do so either with the caveat that proxies can't be Sharpied on the back of other Magic cards. This is actually a really big pet peeve of mine. I understand that there are a number of excellent reasons for playing with proxies, but I'm not willing to put up with hastily made fakes. Commander games tend to become really complex and not being able to thoroughly understand what a card is and does by looking at it takes a lot out of the game, especially since most players tend to recognize cards by their artwork.

With regards to opponents, I don't care as long as the proxies are tasteful. A proxied Damnation should be some other 50c black boardwipe. A proxied beta dual or mana crypt can be something not stupid. Otherwise go nuts.
