Maelstrom Wanderer - another one to the Foil List (Yes, I'm aware of the Arsenal version, but I kept delaying and now this one with better art comes along...)
I don't even need my decks fighting over Mana Crypt to convince me not to get one anymore, the combined costs of all the other foils I want from the set would probably leave me unable to purchase any foil Mana Crypts anyway.
Its lame that the value of the card would dictate its price tag. I actually understand top moving up to rare because its a complicated effect and something they probably should not throw arround everywhere in a draft format in retrospect. There is nothing about recruiter that indicates that it should be a mythic but at the same time I think the same could be said for goyf (hes as vanilla as it comes).
It's lame, but it's reality. FoW got bumped from uncommon to Mythic, Wasteland got bumped to rare, Baleful Strix and Shardless Agent got bumped to rare, and those are all primarily based on price. Also, I think WotC is a bit gunshy on printing high-value P3K cards in easily-accessible form, as the price TANKS, as demonstrated by Commander 2013.

True, but C13 is rather more widespread than EMA is. I would imagine an EMA printing of a P3K card would certainly tank it's price, but I wouldn't expect Hua Tao levels of pricedropping on it here.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
I'm considering a purchase of 1 or 2 boxes. I buy collections every now and then and given how many cards in this set will be used in the dozen or so EDH decks I have on hand, it seems like a decent deal. It would probably be best to wait until all the uncommons, rares and mythics are spoiled though just to get an EV of what my $700-ish will be getting.
I'm holding my breath for a Recruiter reprint, but I'm not certain they'd print a card of that value at Rare (or Uncommon), and Red's Mythics are filled out.
AT LEAST RORIX BLADEWING IS FINALLY GETTING A MUCH-NEEDED REPRINT

To be fair, Baleful Strix and Shardless Agent have only been in pre-cons, so the arbitrary rarity assigned in those precons was arbitrary. They came at the same actual rarity as all of the 1-of commons and rares in those precons.

note that is not that arbitrary, i believe the following logic applies:
For commander, R mean exclusive to 1 deck, U mean that is in 2 o 3 decks and common is in all decks (for new card rarity), both balefux strix and shardless agent was x2 in planechase, hence the U rarity (at x1 they should be rare and x4 commons).
Hey I used to use Rorix as a mono red voltron. It kinda worked even though most of the time I killed people with Kobold tokens with swords instead of Rorix himself...
actually, i REALLY like the new pyroblast layout.. as in the dot-list thing they're doing now. i might actually replace my old ones with these new ones since they're a lot clearer in what they do
Clearly due to the secondary market monetary value of Damnation it should be a mythic
I feel the exact same way. Any card over a certain price gets the Mythic rarity, even if it seems unfitting for Mythic level status. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed this.
Shardless agent (and Baleful Strix) do not seem like rare level cards to me, but what do I know? Waiting for Path to Exile reprint at rare!
How many Call the Skybreaker at rare do we actually need? I mean they print this thing in every special set, what's up with that?
Again, my sentiments exactly. This card has no business in a set designed for eternal formats, even for a filler card it is heavily under the bar. Unless they buried the bar 6 feet into the ground in order to accommodate rares like this in a high profile, limited print run set.

In all reality, I feel like wizards does try somewhat hard to make the overall expected value of these sets sort of close to what the cost of the box is. Its kind of annoying given how much they cost but I think their goals are twofold on increasing supply as well as providing a set to draft. Their overall goal seems to be to not tank secondary market prices which seems kind of vexing because I feel like they really play with the numbers and make it so that the expected value from these is that there is a potentially a very small amount of value made in opening these but then when combined with price drops due to supply usually it seems a little upsidown.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.

especially in a set like this, there's no reason not to use every rare slot on stuff people actually want

Which explains Wrath of God instead of Damnation.

You may think you're trolling, but it really seems like that's what determines most of the mythic rarity assignments.
Granted having both is like, the best.
I think it's far better in most cases.
