So, Rubina Soulsinger seems like an underrated commander. EDH seems to revolve around creature based strategies. Rubina could theoretically cause headaches for decks which rely on their Commanders.
Along with Rubina as commander I am curious as to what additionally to include. Do any of you use Rubina?
I am thinking of using an enchantress shell with card advantage engines like Enchantress Presence, Argothian Enchantress, Verduran Enchantress etc. Something like Freed from Real would be both a cantrip with an enchantress and a way to generate massive resource advantage. If you have a Phyrexian Altar out for instance you could steal then sacrifice every creature on the board.
I would also use utility creatures like Yisan, Captain Sisay and Knight of the Reliquary. I could even throw in an Arcum Daggson for additional tutoring. Additionally, Crucible of Worlds is amazing with Exploration out.
Has anyone tried a Rubina Soulsinger deck? If so, what was your experience? Would a toolbox type Rubina deck be competitive? There are many avenues to take a deck idea like this.
I'm currently running this as a Bant Enchantress deck where she's basically only there for the colors and occasional utility of creature removal. If I had a copy, she would probably get swapped out for Angus Mackenzie. Or Derevi (but we've already go two of those). Actually Derevi, Empyrial Tactician is probably the strongest option there.
Rubinia is in an awkward place. Merieke Ri Berit is almost always better, 'cause she kills what you no longer want and cost two less. If you're really attached to the creature theft plan and not so attached to the colors, Merieke is better. If you're really attached to the enchantress idea, Bant has a lot of the enchantress synergies, ramp, and recursion, so you're kind of stuck with her, Derevi, or Angus.
The rest of it is going to be influenced by what kind of control you end up playing. There are a lot of options (though I don't think Arcum is all that great in the 99 and without a lot of artifact creatures to Tinker into artifact bombs). There are so many choices and making suggestions without a sense of direction doesn't really help anyone. Research other bant control decks, and enchantress decks.
I see Captain Sisay and Yisan being less useful in that context, but Derevi ought to enable a pretty strong hatebears/creature control archetype using those engines. I think that's strongest synergy jumping out at me here.
you might also wanna stash your deck full of sac outlets, to give you an out without having to give creatures back to your opponents/gain you a tiny advantage. Jalira, Master Polymorphist could be useful there.
My Rubinia enchantress deck worked pretty well. Because she untaps on her own, Rubinia Soulsinger requires somewhat less to operate than Merieke Ri Berit. I agree Merieke is ultimately better because of the lower cost as well as higher ceiling, but that's a different set of colors.
