For the same price I can cast a Skyshroud Claim which is normally a lot better, unless you really really need those other colors and don't have dual lands.
I've run Overgrowth in monogreen ramp a few times, but 4 mana just seems to be way too much of an investment for something like this. If you want ramp, dedicate to ramp with minimal color investment, like mono-green, or G/X, but having too many colors hurts your overall synergy, and this is a card for many colors.
Great card in various constructed formats, let alone limited. Commander, however, he lacks a bit of punch.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
I could see him doing alright, especially if you're not running heavy on GY interactions already. I think people undervalue burn in this format. You're not going to take someone from 40 to 0 with Lavamancer but he'll kill utility creatures, screw up combat math, and give you a little bit of reach. That's respectable for a 1-drop.

I've had my day ruined by Lavamancer. If your deck doesn't rely on your have has hand No2 you can put this li'l guy to work murdering utility and mana dorks. Our in my case do the last 4 points of damage that a Mana Crypt didn't stall so greedily.
yeah i'm a fan of the guy, though i prefer the original art. but then i like marginal utility creatures with effects that don't break the game open but do mess things up a bit
plus he's a wizard for UR wizards tribal deck (i know you have one)
This guy's great in any format other than Commander. In Commander, the "exile your own *****" clause kills it.

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
I've always been leary of exiling stuff from my graveyard, because with Commander games going so long, usually, I hate to PERMANENTLY get rid of some of my stuff. Probably why I don't have a spellslinger deck right at the moment, either.

Really? I rarely have a game where there's not at least a few useless cards in the yard, like fetches or ramp spells. Cards that can convert those into something useful are relatively rare and generally worth a look. Do you guys not run things like Treasure Cruise or Dig Through Time either?
Exiling your yard is even an upside some of the time. If I can respond to Reanimate aimed at whichever fatty I've got in the yard by exiling it to shock something, I'm all over that.

I run Lavamancer in Jaya Ballard, and he can certainly be useful. The deck is pretty much built so that any given card either recurs itself, has Madness, or is something that's not high value so there's no sense of loss for discarding it (eg, basic Mountain). Lavamancer can pretty much always use his ability, and the Shock can make a difference a surprising amount of the time, especially when it comes to planeswalkers hiding behind pillowforts.
i think many EDH players overvalue all the gunk in their GY too much. at the end of any game, my GY is filled with rubbish that i have no intention of reusing, so if i can use that as fuel, brilliant.
theres the slight niche of being able to yank stuff out of the GY in response to things like animate dead.
I remember how people reacted to this spoiler. Surely a 4/3 for 2 would be enough to kill the enemy so fast that its rather huge drawback wouldn't be an issue? Except Avacyn Restored made the skies very hostile for guys like this.
Never seen it in Commander either.

It's played in some French suicide black lists (typically helmed by Drana, Liberator of Malakir), for what that's worth. Though that's not a strong archetype even there
could use it as a political thing, give it as a gift? With a sac outlet you can give your friend a surprise blocker! woo!
I did actually, briefly, eyeball this guy for a +1/+1 counter centric deck. His downside is negated as long as you buff him up with counters before trying to throw him into harms way. Giving someone a beater in multiplayer isn't even all that horrible if you can convince someone into throwing it into someone else's red zone. Still, couldn't talk myself into it.
I think I'll stick with Hunted Horror if I want my opponents to have beaters. At least then I get a 7/7 trample for 2 mana and we can gang up on the control player.

All very true, but I don't really have any fetches beyond the few Evolving Wilds effects and not every deck I have runs sorcery ramp. I admit, I should probably be more judicious with my graveyard, but it is just a mindset I've been having. Corpseweft was the card that really started that, I think. Remove some creatures I could get back, get some zombies...then someone board wipes, and then sadness ensues.
Treacherous Pit-Dweller is the kind of card that makes me wish Zedruu had black in it. So many cool "High risk" cards that Zedruu can abuse in black and yet...

I occasionally glance over this card as I look for black rares, and end up briefly wondering what kind of deck could even use this.
Haven't found an answer yet.

Too bad he doesn't fit color schematically with Zedruu the Greathearted. Maybe under a "No Green" group hug deck, but bleh. Green is really good for group hug.
I wonder if he would have worked out as more of a Juzám Djinn rework, where he's a 2 mana 5/5 that comes back bigger and angrier, or if he still would have hit the same wall that the original did.
If people are sick of reading about stuff just stop taking part. You have 100% control over what you read. Simic Ascendancy isn't going to get banned just because you didn't tell someone to shut up on the internet.
