As an aside, I'm convinced Planar Chaos should've given us a black (or possibly red) Unstable Mutation. A philosophical argument could be made for it being either color.
I agree about how it should have been a color shifted Unstable Mutation. Though I have bad memories around Unstable Mutation, as I've lost to that card so many times it's not even funny, and I knew it wasn't even that good, and didn't really belong in blue.
One of the many X-Damage spells. Art is A+ but there are various better options available, such as Rolling Thunder...but redundancy is a thing.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
Strictly worse than Comet Storm and generally worse than Ravaging Blaze, but I think this is third for mono-R single target X damage instants. Which is to say it's rarely going to be playable, unless you're going really deep on the effect or cannot abide sorcery speed.

[Pr]Jaya | Estrid | A rotating cast of decks built out of my box.
Strictly worse than Comet Storm and generally worse than Ravaging Blaze (unless someone were to Tormod's Crypt you just before). If you're in RW, there's Aurelia's Fury. (And both are Things I've Put In Saskia.) In UR, Mindswipe is direct damage but not removal. Some sort of madness deck could use Firestorm. (Or, you know, Nekusar.)
I will say, most x-cost direct damage spells are sorceries.
6/10 There is a strictly better, and a bunch of cards I would play first, but still...

Card advantage is not the same thing as card draw. Something for 2B cannot be strictly worse than something for BBB or 3BB. If you're taking out Swords to Plowshares for Plummet, you're a fool. Stop doing these things!
i play it to much success in Wort, the Raidmother ramp and burn. being instant speed is what makes this thing great when i only have about 12 mana so i can x=10 conspire for 20 damage at EOT and in my turn follow up with another big burn to finish 1 opponent.
I used to use Volcanic Geyser as Comet Storm #2 as a part of a Firemind's Foresight package in case one of the pieces ended up exiled or otherwise unusable. Unlike Ravaging Blaze, you don't need a creature to target to make it kill players, and it being an instant matters for FF.
It's just the right card for my Nin, the Pain Artist deck. As others point out, instant-speed is a big plus. It's a classic Izzet spell-slinger build, so by the time I add on the value from Pyromancer's Goggles, Talrand, Sky Summoner, Guttersnipe and whatnot, even a humble Lightning Bolt is worth including. All the deck asks of spells is that they be cheap and fast.

Last card for this year, as I'll be visiting family to ring out the old year tomorrow.
So, Giant Slug. Only 5 mana to essentially be unblockable? On a 1B 1/1? Sign me up! Slap some equipment on it, wonder how the hell a slug is swinging with some swords, and then call it a day.
Okay. It's bad. But it's a slam-dunk in a freaky art deck.

I mean, he's swinging a sword in the art, even though it may be attached to a person.
Giant Slug is a card with panache. It's not good, but it's got moxie.
Cardname: Giant Slug
Card art: Giant Slug
P/T: it tickles a little
Now time to pester Maro to make a Ginormous Slug.
I guess the landwalk on the next upkeep is due to it being a slow moving slug. It's just sits there, inching towards you, and you know there is nothing you can do about it.
Man, old art was so much better. I've always liked the "Its from a spellbook" or old school monster manual look. So much more evocative, so much more recognizable.
Anyway, this is one of those cards that makes me want to get my playgroup into crapmander, the all cards must suck variant. I only assume it exists. We have a crap cube that we have a lot of fun with (2.5 stars or less on gatherer, player judgement for newer cards that aren't rated). I want to strap Feast of the Unicorn on this bad boy in a sweet Veldrane deck.

Onering's 4 simple steps that let you solve any problem with Magic's gameplay
Whether its blue players countering your spells, red players burning you out, or combo, if you have a problem with an aspect of Magic's gameplay, you can fix it!
Step 1: Identify the problem. What aspect of Magic don't you like? Step 2: Find out how others deal with the problem. How do players deal with this aspect of the game when they run into it? Step 3: Do what those players do. Step 4: No more problem. Bonus: You are now better at Magic. Enjoy those extra wins!
This would've been absolutely horrible to the metagame if not for Great Wall and friennds.
But seriously, 1/10. And you thought Squire was the worst one-power critter for two mana. Squire totally pwns this piece of *****.

If for some reason, you have a giant amount of mana left over on some turn and some way of making this guy really big, at least he packs evasion for most situations. That said, he's pretty bad.....
Combos with Quietus Spike. It was probably one of the first cards that I realized was awful right off the bat, but I still love the art, and the concept behind it, even if it's awful execution.
The flavor is so spot on. Its a giant slug, so its a 1/1, because that's frigging huge for a slug! You can give it land walk, but its gonna take awhile to get there, because slugs are slow! At least they had fun designing it.

It's so strange to think that Spitting Slug was larger than Giant Slug in terms of actual combat ability. Then again, being big enough to take on the averagehuman is quite an accomplishment for a garden pest.

Exactly where I would use it, but I think slinging fireballs is too boring with that deck. I try to win with stuff like Primal Bellow instead.

Giant Slug is a card with panache. It's not good, but it's got moxie.
Edit: nope only basic land types so it fails there too. I think there was an ice age card that could get it maybe that was the only one.
Also 1/1 might be giant for a slug, but it's not giant in general.
