So, I've actually wanted to make this thread for a while now, but just never decided to do it until now. I was in the process of making a Sidisi, Blood Tyrant deck and wanted to put in a bunch of retrace cards, because the mechanic is just awesome. I'm having a hard time cutting down to the 99 and considered excluding Glamerdye, then I thought about how many times I've used it to pretty awesome affect. So, I'd thought I'd make a thread to discuss its uses and common to semi-common targets for it.
I'd say some of the best targets are the Swords of X and Y, as you can change the protections and potentially save yourself from that voltron running amok at your table or get more relevant protections for yourself.
So, what's some cool uses or common targets for Glamerdye? Do you like Glamerdye? What's some awesome things you've done with it or similar things that it could also do?
I played it in a creature-less spell-based Animar list to hack his protections. Great with Secrets of the Dead, as is any retrace spell. Never used it otherwise.
Not a lot of other Commanders with built-in protections come to mind off the top of my head.
Before I converted Tibor and Lumia into Shu Yun, I ran it mostly because it was an easily repeatable way to activate their evasion when I hadn't managed to draw Oona's Grace yet. There was definitely a time or two that using it to change a protection around got me out of a pinch, though.

Opal-eye, Konda's Yojimbo ~ Rayne, Academy Chancellor ~ Toshiro Umezawa ~ Jaya Ballard, Task Mage ~ Yeva, Nature's Herald
Teysa, Orzhov Scion ~ Tajic, Blade of the Legion ~ Selvala, Explorer Returned ~ Savra, Queen of the Golgari
Marchesa, the Black Rose ~ Sydri, Galvanic Genius ~ Alesha, Who Smiles at Death ~ Riku of Two Reflections ~ Sidisi, Brood Tyrant
I run Whim of Volrath in my Thada Adel deck for similar reasons. For that deck, the ability to hack land types is usually more important than hacking colors, but I've done both. In the general case I prefer 3 mana over 2 mana plus discarding a land, although in something like Sidisi where you're milling yourself, priorities change and being able to cast the spell from the 'yard makes it attractive.
Yeah, there a a few generals it synergizes with, such as Animar, Lavinia of the Tenth, and so on. But even then, it's not crazy superb relative to other options. It's not as if all White decks are clamoring to run Flickering Ward.
Basically, you include it for situations where it randomly surprises people on some card they were relying to do something, then it doesn't.
I thought there was a buyback version, and oop, Lithl beat me to it. I saw that once out of a Jeskai Sunforger deck that was running Boil. Would have destroyed all sorts of lands if it hadn't gotten countered.
Perhaps I lack imagination (doubtful) but this scarcely appears to be an actual card.
Yeah, I definitely wish it worked for basic land types as well. A Crystal Spray with Retrace, but without that stupid EOT clause, would certainly be several times more useful. I also kind of wish there were a card like this that could change card types, like Artifact to creature on Shatter.
Glamerdye and other colorhacking cards work well against some commonly played cards. As you had previously stated in the OP, an opposing creature equipped with Sword of Feast and Famine may pose a serious threat against most of the answers in your Sidisi, Brood Tyrant build. Colorhack the Sword to gain protection from Black to Red, and now you can Murder that creature and any others equipped with the Sword of Gruul. If Gods are common commanders that you play against you now have the ability to completely shut off devotion. In fact something similar happend to me last weekend while playing Heliod, God of the Sun. One player was facing down a 6/7 Double Strike Lifelink Heliod, and another player saved him by casting Sleight of Mind and changed Devotion to White into Devotion to Red.
One-sided bounce is cool, but it requires a ton of setup, the opponent should know it's coming since they can see Llawan, and they can still re-cast non-blue creatures once they're back in hand. Not impressed.
I like Glamerdye for Swords in a Voltron deck and anti-sword/sword-politic reasons, but the list would need to have room for it and additional benefits than that...

This is why I started playing magic in the first place. It wasn't PT aspirations just making noobs cry by doing things that are perfectly fair.

Wow. I didn't even think of the gods. Those things are never becoming creatures. That's amazing.
And no, not liquimetal coating. I want a card that can change something like Doom Blade's "Destroy target nonblack creature." into "Destroy target nonblack Land." and the spell fizzle because it doesn't have a valid target. It'd be awesome and stupidly abused.

The Llawan interaction works.

8/1/2008 Glamerdye's effect has no duration. It will last until the game ends or the affected spell or permanent leaves the relevant zone, with the following exception: If Glamerdye affects an artifact, creature, enchantment, or planeswalker spell, it will also affect the permanent that spell becomes when it resolves.

No they can't... You changed that 'blue' to something else. Glammerdye doesn't say until end of turn.

Well, in the case of Doom Blade, any hacking effect which can target spells can make it fizzle unless it's targeting a colorless creature. Change "nonblack" to "nonred" or whatever is appropriate, and it fizzles for having an invalid target.

It was an example. Meh, this is kind of off topic anyway.
There's also a few cards that interact with Llawan in case the opponent is non-blue...Gilded Drake and other "swap theft" cards. It's a nice way to cover more ground with her utility. Also...blue is stupid strong, this card is rarely dead in a dangerous meta.
What I would love to do is steal an enemy Omnath, change the text from green to blue and hold butt loads of blue mana.
Another thing I would like to try out is that in a Talrand deck and view from above. Change his wording from blue to white and just make a crap load of tokens. Bonus points if u got some sort of prowess or heroic creature.
