Hey guys, Volvary here and me and my playground recently talked about the potential of "Commander Status" a lot of creatures had and we came around to the idea of a commander set, where they would either reprint a lot of creatures with the Legendary type or Reprint "Legend" versions of old cards, with actual names (for example, Kulrath Knight could suddenly become, X, Kulrath Knight Lord), which would behave exactly the same as the original except for a single line added to the card, being "This card counts as a Kulrath Knight for deckbuilding rules". (We haven't found exactly yet how it should be worded.)
So we came up with a rather small list and I was wondering what you guys would like to see as Commanders.
There is an old legend that says the nephilim are already allowed to be commanders. Not many people recognize this, but all you have to do is build it.
I actually think he would be sweet as he would play like skythrix as you hit commander damage as fast as you can and then basically that player cant kill your commander or they die...

I would love to see Kulrath Knight. I -1/-1 counter-theme was something I wanted to build for a long time now. Ali from Cairo would be another cool thing. And I mean, his name clearly indicates he's legendary (okay, let's forget about the 1000 mirror/copy lore)... Sadly, Legendary creatures weren't invented back then.
Underworld Cerberus would of been an interesting Commander--hard evasion, gravelock, and can be manipulated to exiling opponent's graves so only you may benefit. Kind of reminds me of Balthor, the Defiled if he were updated to modern day Magic.
Evershrike would of provided another flavor of Auratron.
Treasury Thrull is decent to use for Extort and to swing with.
Murkfiend Liege because it's not as bad as Prophet while still being useful to a more stompish deck.
Mindwrack Liege can be a potentially fun commander and an alternative to Jhoria decks. Giving your creatures flash is great.
Overbeing of Myth is a biased choice because I love Maro effects as well as having a good grip of cards.
Reaper of the Wilds has a decent body and plenty of utility. Maybe not the most oppressive in it's colors, but it's still an option if you're looking for more value at the helm.
Soulfire Grand Master would of been an interesting spellslinger deck for it's Buyback ability alone.
Good topic! I was thinking about this the other day.
Deathbringer Liege Sort of like a sadistic Momir Vig deck. Master of the Wild Hunt Because wolf tribal needs to be a thing. Stoic Angel I know Bant already has some great voltron generals but I really like the artwork and the abilities are really good. Maelstrom Archangel I honestly thought this was a Legendary for the longest time. Swans of Bryn Argoll Because I'm not above playing a two card combo with it and Pariah.
Maelstrom Archangel is my number one pick here as well. I would love to play that. I also wish Kheru Lich Lord had been the clan's legendary instead of Sidisi, his effect is so much more fun. Havengul Lich is another card I'd love to be legendary.
Havengul Lich is still my number one "man I wish this was a legendary" card. Innistrad as a whole was full of these little dissapointments, what with Huntmaster of the Fells failing to be legendary as well.
In recent memory, Overseer of the Damned is exactly he kind of value engine I would just adore having in the command zone.
So we came up with a rather small list and I was wondering what you guys would like to see as Commanders.
Our list:
Kulrath Knight
All five Nephilims (Dune-Brood Nephilim Glint-Eye Nephilim Ink-Treader Nephilim Witch-Maw Nephilim Yore-Tiller Nephilim)
Blood Baron of Vizkopa - As much as this one would annoy me, we still believe he feels like a legendary.
Blood Tyrant
Defiler of Souls
Dragonlair Spider
Elite Arcanist - Keep in mind that he would be legendary so no Clone shenanigan easily
Empyrial Archangel
Gaea's Liege
Gemini Engine
Some honorable mentions:
Abyssal Persecutor - Imagine how dumb it would be.
Argent Sphinx
Broodstar
Deathpact Angel
Demon of Death's Gate - Is in here because it might prove to actually be too strong.
Havengul Lich
We are still currently looking into filling the list by looking at the full list of creature but that is proving to be way long..
MODERN:
RG Shamanism RG
WUG Blades of the Avatars WUG
LEGACY:
WUBRG Cascabalance WUBRG
Made by the amazing Traproot

Prophet of Kruphix
I actually think he would be sweet as he would play like skythrix as you hit commander damage as fast as you can and then basically that player cant kill your commander or they die...
BGGRock
Modern

A more fun use would be with Endless Whispers or the 10 mana + Avarice Totem trick to give it to an opponent.
That would be my first choice for turning a non-legendary legendary. Looks very fun to build around.
Ali from Cairo would be another cool thing. And I mean, his name clearly indicates he's legendary (okay, let's forget about the 1000 mirror/copy lore)... Sadly, Legendary creatures weren't invented back then.

You know, I really wouldn't mind them exploring the design space of non-creature commanders. Dunno what they could use, but hey.
Well we already have 5 planeswalkers that can be commanders and we are getting a cycle of 5 creatures that transform into planeswalkers in July.
The cycle of "Epic" spells from Kamigawa were an attempt at making legendary sorceries.
Enduring Ideal ended up being reasonably playable in standard and extended, but the other ones feel flat.
Neverending Torment can do some work in a Nekusar deck, honestly.
I'm talking about something like
Naturally Taxing it per cast; first time is RR, second is 2RR, third is 4RR.
Or a
So it's 2, 4, 6 on and on.
Would be interesting to see where they took it at the very least.
