So a few weeks ago, I embarked upon a deck building challenge to create a deck from each modern legal block. Creativity is the aim and using commanders in the top 50 most used is not allowed.
For Kamigawa I was first thinking of using Marrow-Gnawer rat tribal and whilst interesting did not offer the level of difficulty I was looking for. Next was Kirin with an Arcane and Spirit focus however there are barely enough good spirits or arcane spells in either black or red to make it very good. I've had a look and think the Kirin are too cool to not include in a deck of some kind but I want to stick to spirits and arcane.
The solution is Genju of the Realm. The tragic issue with Genju however is that whilst legendary it is not a creature (for the majority of the time).
So here is the question: Were I to sit down to play EDH in your casual playgroup, would you be ok with/ allow me to play Genju of the Realm as my commander?
The problem is there aren't many multicolored generals in Kamigawa block.
You could cheat and pick, say, an two-color general, and you could then build a pretty good spirits-and-arcane (would recommend either BG or RW if you're going that route) or samurai (RW, or maybe straight W with one of the samurai legends. Both of the red and white Kirins are pretty good in a spirits-and-arcane deck, and splice is better than you might think (secret tech: Candles' Glow spliced onto Glacial Ray or vice versa)
If you're willing to open up to a new general Iname, Death Aspect is great. He is naturally spirit tribal(ish) and has amazing combo potential in different ways - yet still flies under the radar.
I also like ayumi, the last visitor voltron but my deck has very little to with with arcane or spirits.
I wouldn't care if you played Genju of the Realm. I'd actually be curious and excited initially, but a couple of my friends would because they take the format more seriously, or strongly value rules. Some of my friends would allow it, but they wouldn't be crazy about it. If the deck proved to be especially powerful, they may ask you to stop. Genju of the Realm is an 8/12 with trample that will almost always cost 5 to play it. That's very good.
I would personally be fine with you using Genju of the Realm. Not sure about every group, though.
Is the only other option for a multi-color general in Kamigawa block Iname as One? It's cool, but so very very expensive. Too bad mono-color will be difficult to make good with the in-block only restriction.

True, a hard to target (most of the time) 8/12 trample commander is strong but im not sure you have much to fear from Arcane and Spirits tribal if other people are sitting at the table
Thanks all, I will build the deck and worst case scenario I'll bring a spare commander and swap out.

EDH BRGKresh the BloodbraidedBRG, A box of lands and ideas.
Modern: RG Titanshift. A deck made of cards too stupid for EDH.
Retired: Lots. More than I feel you should suffer through or I should type out.
I'd be okay with it. I'd make sure we were clear up front though that the land your commander enchants is NOT your commander (so there's no way for Genju to deal commander damage short of shenanigans like opalescence).
That said, there are a lot of other fun commanders in Kamigawa block.
I wouldn't care. I would have built him as a commander by now because he's probably the most interesting 5 color legendaryesque creature out there. The only thing holding me back is not every group allows it. If you're going for block... just go 8.5 tails!
I agree. We should all only play g/x decks because they are the most objectively fun and anyone who disagrees does not know the truth about EDH. Everyone should just play their decks because interaction beyond high fiving about how many land are in play is unfun and equivalent to casting Stasis while kicking puppies. I for one will never play with anyone who casts tutors, removal spells, blue cards, things I arbitrarily decide I don't like but will probably cast myself later.

Of course, I'd be plenty interested to see this deck across from me.
