I am one of those rare players that prefers non-foil cards.
I don't think you're that rare. In fact, I know a ton of players with the same opinion, myself included. When they first released foil prints, I immediately hated them, because I viewed foils as a gimmick and associated them with "children's card games" like Pokemon. I've also been known to irrationally hate the modern card face on its initial release, full art promos, double-sided cards, and anything else that deviated from the original design (Yes, I'm old and stubborn ). I always come around, but I still prefer the original card face, non-foil whenever possible.
As a practical matter, it's very humid where I live, which causes foils to warp very quickly if not double sleeved and properly stored, so that's also a factor. And of course, there's the fact that foils cost more. For me, that money is better spent acquiring additional cards/decks that I don't already own.

think it's a gigantic waste of money. only think i'll allow is foil basics which go in almost any deck and look pretty and make me feel less bored of basic lands.
Given in another topic I said I would never foil a deck out again... my Daretti is 70% foiled now... but it only cost me about $100 to get most of them (the nonfoils went into other decks or traded away). As others have said, it helps personalize my favorite deck and it retains and gains so much value. In fact, when I sold/traded my Lands.dec EDH deck, I had enough value to not only Foil most of Daretti out, but build 3 other decks! So it worked out well for me. and I still have stuff left to move!
That being said, I prefer any pimpness, alters, signatures, foiling, etc. I've got a foil signed Great Furnace I picked up a year ago on ebay for 5$ shipped I'm proud of.
Every single deck I own is either fully foiled or on the way there. I love foils, and if you have the money they're a better buy for one reason:
Foils retain their value and increase in value far faster than nonfoils. For exmaple, foil zen fetches won't drop when they're reprinted. Nonfoils will, and significantly. Second, popular edh foils skyrocket in price pretty quickly. If you grab them a month after release, you're prtty much always going to make money on them if you need to get rid of them.
EDIT: That being said, I prototype a lot and only build/foil decks i enjoy and plan to keep. If you build/destroy decks often, dont bother with foiling
I forgot to mention in my last post that when I am deciding on foils, I lean toward permanents over instants/sorceries. I would much rather look at shiny basics for multiple turns than a foil Swords to Plowshares mostly hidden in my graveyard.
Edit: Im amused, I did the regular card tag and it gave me a foil version lol.
Not a fan of foils either. Some look better than the normal card, some look worse. But mostly I hate how warped older foils get and I especially hate the thought of trying to foil out decks. I'd rather spend 1/3'd the money and have more left over for other cards. Seems like a lot more fun.
I just foil the commander (if possible, Zirilan of the Claw can't be) and try to leave the rest unfoiled. The Commander is supposed to special and "stand out" a little bit so it gets a little special treatment. Unless of course the foil is $120 (Darn you Scion!)

EDH UBX - Milling Zombie Horde (now with spliced mana!)
I dumped several thousand dollars over several years into foiling out some of my favorite decks.
Then, one day, I just decided I wanted the $ instead and I was ready to sell them all off. Once I did that, honestly?, I never wanted to own a single foil again. They are just a royal pain in the ass to collect, maintain, AND (yes, believe it or not) sell.
I also felt like a bit of a twit for ever obsessing over this in the first place. You will too.
This game is (really REALLY) expensive enough...just let it go. Frankly, no one cares about an all-foiled deck but the person running it. A significant % of people who even remotely care will just think you're overcompensating for something or just showing off. Or, some ******** might just steal it--that person will be very impressed, of course.

This more accurately reflects my feelings than my own post.
The only foils I use are my general if possible, cards that simply have better art on the foil (Greater Good), or cards that I got for cheap. Knight of the Reliquary was both B and C in this case. I would never foil out a deck due to the cost and the fact that when I purchase foils I often do not know what kind of condition they will be in. My Knights came from someplace humid and it took forever to get them flattened enough to be legal in sleeves.

I'm solidly in the non-foil camp. My two biggest reasons being:
-I have a collection that spans all sets, including a lot of cards never printed in foil. 60% foil seems like a bad percentage of foilness. I'd much rather have consistency.
-I view foils like spinning rims on a car - cool at first, and then kinda tacky. It can be cool for a really crucial, cool card (like your commander and...probably nothing else) but foiling out random utility spells? Tacky.
The glare is an annoyance too, though. And although I generally have a no-budget policy, with a large collection foiling it out gets insanely expensive, I suspect mine would hit 6 figures if I foiled the whole thing.
Reading these replies, I find it interesting how many people find foils to be "tacky." Where does that come from? Foil 10th edition Loxodon Warhammer without any reminder text is so much nicer looking than the other printings. I don't "foil out" my decks, but as I said in my other reply, I really like to focus on cards that are important to me.
I don't know what it is like where you game, but I have had the pleasure of playing in few different cities and stores throughout the country while I was away on business trips. I would actively search for and visit gaming stores in what ever city I was in and try to play in them when I was off the clock, in addition to seeing some of the sites. In my travels and now living in South America, I have never heard anyone complain about foils and have gotten complements on a number of them. Until this thread, I had never heard anyone complain about them (outside of foil curl or price), and I have never had anyone target me or my cards because they are foil. Or, at least if they did, they kept that reason to themselves. If someone uses a land destruction spell on my foil Cabal Coffers, I am pretty sure it is because I have Cabal Coffers in play and not because it is a foil.

From dictionary.com:
Tacky [tak-ee]
4. gaudy; flashy; showy.
foils are all those things. Being foil doesn't have any practical advantage, it's just to show off. There aren't very many things that are normally matte, and don't look tacky when they're made glittery. teeth? check. phones? check. vampires? check. You get the idea.
I grab nice looking foils if they're only a buck or two more than the non-foil. Foiling out an entire deck is wayyy too much of an investment for me, and most foils don't look that great anyway.
Only exception is my commander. I try to get foil versions where possible.

having set my foot firmly in the 'i don't like foils' camp, i have an admission to make:
i love the foiled time stop from 10th ed i think it was (it JUST says 'end the turn'). has some level of epic-ness to it that no other card has (that i can think of). i can't figure out how to link that image here without leeching; and i've already gotten into trouble for that once.

Oh yeah, my friend pulled one of those from a pack. All the foils in 10th lacked reminder text (and in some cases, replaced reminder text with flavour text). I wish I'd traded it off him at the time, because now it's $70!
I prefer foils, but I've set very strict rules for myself to prevent wasting money. I'll only buy a foil if it costs less, the same, or only slightly more. I can seek out a trade for a promo foil, but I'll only trade for a regular foil if it isn't worth much and I need to push a trade over. In the unlikely event that I pull a foil I have use for, I'll generally only hang onto it if it's not worth serious money.

If you don't like foils, great. As I said before, MtG has a lot of art with particle effects, fire, gold, and so forth which all POP on foils. 10thEdition Arcanis the Omnipotent looks amazing in foil. His cloak isn't foiled, only his belt buckle, eyes and particle effects are. On the other hand, I agree that the Deckmasters Necropotence looks far worse than an original. As I said a few times, I don't foil my decks out, but I do like to collect those that I feel look better as foils. Another example is Eighth Edition City of Brass. It looks amazing with the sun beam and light reflecting off the brass.
In my 10 years (this July) of playing magic, this is the first time I have ever heard anything negative about "premium/foil" cards from anyone outside of complaints of curling or the price. there are countless pages and threads on a variety of MtG forums where people show off their foils and others come to look at them. There is a difference between sharing something you like with others and that thing begin tacky, gaudy, or ostentatious. If that is how you feel, then fine. I simply don't share that sentiment.
Another example is Forbid. The only source of light in that art is from what ever that glowing object is in his hand. I assume it is a scroll that he casts and is getting it back (buyback). Regardless of what it is, it is the only light source and is glowing blue. As a result, the foil looks amazing because it emphasizes the glowing blue light source in the art.

Oh, I don't disagree that there are plenty of foils that look cool, and it's fun to look at them in trade binders, or as commanders. Really it's more about the rarity than anything, rare older versions are also interesting. It's like having a piece of fine art on your wall. Is that a Manet? Fascinating.
An all-foil deck is like a house with every wall filled floor-to-ceiling with fine art. It stops being cool and interesting and starts looking pretentious and tacky.
Definitely agree on some cards looking better in foil than not. An example for me is the ftv maze of ith. The art itself is great, but the old colorless land borders were so bland that i prefer the original, which at least has a lot of flavor to it

I agree with you 100% there. I also love my Alpha Mind Twist and Beta Demonic Tutor. Right now, at this stage in my life, I have actually grown attached to the "modern" card frames and prefer to use this Demonic Tutor over my Beta in my commander deck. In fact, when ever possible, I try to hunt down the modern card frame versions, which is more diffiuclt that it might seem because I am an American living in Peru. I can't just go on ebay or some online store and get a pile of cards on the cheap sent to my door like when I was back home in California.
The other thing I agree with others here is in regards to the price. I was lucky enough to have started playing and collecting magic cards ten years ago this July. I was also lucky enough to have found out about and started playing EDH in late 2007, long before the format took off and caused random junk cards to skyrocket in price, or at least their foils. I have a variety of now "staple" EDH cards that were between $2-$5 as a foil which are now $25+ each in foil. No way would I spend those prices now. But back then? $1 for a non foil, $2.50 for a non foil and $5 for the foil? I can do that no problem. My foil Rings of Brighthearth cost me something like $4 in 2007. Now the non-foil is $25 or so. I got a set of non-foil Tops for $4 a piece anda foil top for about $12 back then. I later traded it off for a pile of non-foil cards worth more than $75 and just thought "thank you for the profit!" I like Top in non-foil more anyway. Today a regular Goyf costs nearly as much as an unlimited Mox Emerald used to cost in 2007 when Goyf was printed. I totally understand and agree with the outrage over prices in today's game.
