I brought up this format to my playgroup (which is heavy on multiplayer EDH, some dabble in Duel Commander). It was a general consensus that Geist of Saint Traft and Doran, the Siege Tower would be the top 2 choices to play since they're already established as "top tier" 1v1 commanders.
I found it a bit constrictive since there aren't any "legal" Mardu, Jeskai and Sultai generals that you can use (The RC for this format has a fix however, you can play a 2/2 "vanilla" creature with the color identity of the said wedges).
Since it wasn't posted in the OP and for anyone that doesn't realize, this format is only meant for 1v1 games with 10 card sideboards, not multiplayer. It's intended to be a sort of Legacy/EDH hybrid.
I was considering a Grenzo, Dungeon Warden deck that is basically vial goblins. It loses out on Siege-Gang Commander and Goblin Ringleader, but there are still a ton of other goodies. I question their banned list however as it seems to be legacy banned list with a few things removed/added. Without chaining ringleaders with food chain, I hardly see goblin recruiter as banworthy. Also, sword of body and mind? Yes this is only a 50 card format, but it kills about as quickly as a SoFI on a 2/2. Survival of the Fittest without vengevine doesn't seem very OP.
wasn't one of the major point of EDH being a format where to play flashy, big spells? i mean, elder dragon highlander. it doesn't interest me at all... it would probably be better the opposite, spells with cost < 6 are not allowed, that would be ridicolous lol
I agree, I could get behind 6+ before I'd be sold on 3-.
49 cards is begging mill to break the format.
General:Tetsuo Umezawa This may seem odd but it actually is a decent control general and my deck does not depend on it.
A couple of guys at my LGS have tried it. It is mostly a 1v1 format, from what I understand. Would make a GREAT option for stuff to do between multiplayer traditional EDH games. They seem to like it, and it completely changes the way you value cards.
I might throw one together at some point just to try it out. I'm already leaning toward something aggro like Brimaz, King of Oreskos/Isamaru, Hound of Konda white weenie aggro. Its so opposite of what my normal EDH decks are, that it seems fun.
With only 49 cards in the physical deck, I feel like Mill is the way to go. Sword of Body and Mind was banned for a reason. Glimpse the Unthinkable essentially hits for 10 of the 42 cards that the deck starts out with, aka 2 mana for 5 damage in burn terms.
A good Omnath deck sounds like it might be a little OP in a format somewhat light in removal. Though without the green creature bombs (other than some of the X hydras) it would basically just end up being elfball with even more mana. That's just an initial impression. I'd have to brainstorm to find out if I'm right.
Meh, not a fan. Since this is roughly the size of a standard deck, and since the life totals are similar to standard, it probably means you're back to 40% mana. That means 20 lands, so after your general you're only left with 29 cards to formulate a strategy/get creative. Just seems to me like a handcuff on my fun. But, to each their own, if some people enjoy it go on and do it. If I'm looking for EDH variants I'd choose Planechase, Archenemy, or the incorporation of Vanguard cards in my deck.
My glissa deck would need to cut 10-15 cards as-is and would end up being completely bonkers in this format. I kind of like it.
Basically the format lives and dies on the use of spot removal, as nearly every relevant sweeper is cut from the format. Any deck that can either take advantage of it or prevent its use would probably work very well. I might try building something silly like bant enchantress with tons of cheap hexproof creatures and buffs.
Okay, I quickly went through my Omnath deck, removed all the 4cmc + cards and a few other cards and cane up with 42 cards to add all the XGG and XGGG green creatures to.

so me and my friend have just gotten into the format and started theory crafting, and isnt doomsday combo just absolutely busted? you have multiple draw 7s all the combo pieces for a lab maniac kill, as well as the infernal tutor, Lion's Eye Diamond interaction and mystical tutor. I know it goes against the spirit of the format but I feel like this is too busted to just ignore. Me and my friend are working on a list and I can post it if anyone is interested

Go ahead, that's something I've been brewing today also.
My first thought was also grixis storm and/or Doomsday. After that I looked into monoblue High Tide which evolved into Ambassador Laquatus with Grim Monolith infinite mana as kill condition.
I've been considering building a deck for this format. Can't decide between mono-black control, B/G stax and Abzan midrange. If I pick up the format I'll probably build Abzan to start and then see where it takes me.

I was Selvala, Explorer Returned Tokens vs a friends Nin, Pain Artist goodstuff. First game he won handidly (Insectile Abberation equipped with Runechanter's pike ends games fast) but the second game just went on forever due to me gaining so much life and him not being able to do anything when I got my hate online.
