With my current playgroup, I find that I win a lot. Not that they're bad, but I have a larger collection and generally more powerful cards. I'd like to tone it down a bit. What's a funnish deck I can play that is fair and not overly powerful?
Something that durdles hard. You get to do a bunch of things so you're not bored, but it won't actually overtake the game. G/B is a pretty good combination for this, especially Glissa.
I have a Glissa durdle deck, and it's goals are things such as cracking a Mishra's Bauble 6 times a turn, or pinging a bunch of creatures with a deathtoucher. It's one deck where my opponents never cared when I gen waved for 15, because I'd just flip baubles and ways to recur them. It was fun to play though.
I've played with this deck, i find it quite fun since it's a crappy version of an Enchantress deck and it's oldborder only!
Tithe is kinda MEH at the moment, but im planning to add a Scrubland to the deck, i think since it's quite cheap. The other duals are just too damn expensive.
Sometimes a plain, ol' stompy-face deck is what's called for. Mayael, Xenagod and Borborygmos v 1.0 are all good choices.
I might do this one tomorrow with Stonebrow. Have a mono green stompy deck right now and it just wins too fast. Will have to work on making it a bit gimmicky.
Generally I refrain from putting overt combos into any deck I make. Vampire Hexmage + Dark Depths is fine, as is Chainer, Dementia Master + Kokusho, The Evening Star, but Sanguine Bond + Exquisite Blood is right out. You gotta self censor when you play Commander. Anyone can build a deck with a bunch of tutors that just combo kills everyone, but no one like that. Pick an aspect of the game you like and design something around that. If that's the sacrifice effect, you get something like my Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder deck, if you like Artifacts then you could do something with Memnarch, Feldon, or both, or if you like combos, then you're a terrible person and should quit the format -.- Important part is, have fun with it and cater to what your group can and can't deal with. Don't make yourself an easy opponent to crush, but if your friends are playing Rakdos decks, don't play Enchantment/Super-Fog. It's a happy medium that you have to find. Commander is a really personalized format. EVERY Commander deck is built differently for different reasons. As a result, it will be hard for us to tell you what you should play, because it's really about you.
I think combo decks can be quite fun and interactive provided A) You don't actively tutor straight for your one combo every time as quickly as possible, B) Your deck does more than just that one thing, and/or C) Your combos are deliberately weird, interesting, and convoluted, like assembling the Fifth Dawn 4+ card Station combo, or my patent-pending Hedron Crab, Ruin Ghost, Lotus Cobra, Tideforce Elemental infinite landfall combo.
I'm in a similar situation. I am considering just throwing a gameplan to the wind and building something with cards and mechanics I like, maybe Ghost Council of Orzhova with Dimensional Breach. That way, I would get to experience the interactions I always wanted without it getting too overwhelming. Is this a good approach, do you think?

I've had success with that approach. I have a Maelstrom Wanderer deck, but it has none of the good cards expected in a Wanderer deck. Instead, it's all the blue, green, and red cards I've always wanted to play with but never made the cut in any of my better decks.
It's one of my most enjoyable decks to play. I absolutely love every time I get to cast stuff like Jungle Barrier.
5 colour goodstuff with Sliver Hivelord. But don't make it 5 colour greatstuff.
Try to limit yourself to cards that aren't close to playable in competitive Modern (or for pre-Modern cards, wouldn't be competitive if they were legal). Things like ramping toward suspending a big Aeon Chronicaler, casting Wrath effects, and winning with good but beatable winconditions like Niv-Mizzet 1.0 and 2.0.
Try to run 10 of the weaker planeswalkers in there. They make interesting games.
