So I fell in love with the Abzan clan prior to the prerelease for KTK and want to build a deck in those colors. I was going to use Ghave as my general, but I want to build a competitive deck purposefully using the Khan of Abzan, Anafenza, the Foremost. The theme I want to build upon is beefing up my creatures with +1/+1 counters and taking advantage of creatures which benefit from receiving counters. So far, I know I want to throw in a number of creatures with Outlast. I know I want to use PWs like Ajani, Mentor of Heroes and Ajani Steadfast. I know Doubling Season will be an auto-include. Does anyone have any other suggestions for such a deck?
Nice! Thank you, Dragoon91! Excellent suggestions, all of them. I especially love Corpsejack and W Mikaeus. And how could I have forgotten about Vigor?
It'll be interesting to run 3 different versions of Ajani in my deck. I've never done that before.
I'm not sure the +1/+1 is the competitive part of Anafenza. Don't get me wrong, I think she's a competitive general, but it's for her cheap grave hate, not her ability to slightly buff her dudes. If you're looking for synergy with counters though, the colors have a ton. Greater Good would be a must in this deck.
As the Outlast creatures go, I'd stick with Abzan Falconer, Ainok Bond-Kin, and Mer-Ek Nightblade. Maybe Abzan Battle Priest and Tuskguard Captain as well, but they're a bit lower on my list. Flying is always great, and the combination of first strike and deathtouch is too good to pass up (they're not bad on their own as well). Trample is less good as evasion than flying, but also has synergy with deathtouch, and while lifelink is a nice bonus it's much less relevant than other effects.
I may be doing something similar myself soon. I opened Anafenza as my prerelease promo, and opened Hardened Scales and Retribution of the Ancients in my prize packs. I'm still not thrilled with Anafenza as a commander but I'm okay with running something less potent than Ghave if only to help keep too much heat from being pointed at me.

Ooo, Greater Good seems so tasty! I agree with you about Anafenza's utility. However, I also don't want to draw too much hate using Ghave as luminum can points out below.

It s always a pleasure to receive advice from you, luminum can, so thank you. I agree with you about the Abzan support team choices. I especially love the deathtouching orc. Also, I was either going to include the Tuskguard Captain or Bramblewood Paragon. I love me some trample action!
cauldron of souls will grant persist, therefore giving you a chance to add +1/+1 counters the next turn.
Cauldron is good. What do you think of Mikaeus, the Unhallowed in a deck like this? I'm actually trying to build another deck with Marchea, the Black Rose with the same +1/+1 theme. I love this theme! So I don't know about including Mikaeus in both, but why not, right?
I forgot about Kalonian Hydra. Phytotitan seems like an auto-include, though. I'll have to see if it makes the cut. I like that my card pool options are growing. Thank, all! Keep the suggestions going!
Vigilance kinda goes against her since u would like tapped creatures. So Masako the Humorless would be a good thing here. So you still have the luxury of blocking with your outlast guys.

To the people that say that a card needs to be a higher rarity because of Limited... I hate you guys so much. I present to you with this.

EDIT: Also, it might be worth including Kalonian Hydra and Heroes' Bane, as they would become fearsome if put out with any combination of Abzan Falconer, Ainok Bond-Kin, Mer-Ek Nightblade, Abzan Battle Priest and Tuskguard Captain.

Archangel of Thune is great. It inspires me to build around a life-gain subtheme to spice up the deck.
