Can someone please explain why Sylvan Primordial is banned? His effects don't seem too mean or evil. I've been told that you will always get value out of it, but why is that ban worthy?
Because it's incredibly warping. You get insane value out it, and if you're green there's no way you're going to play without it. It is also decent ramp stapled onto something that can hose all your opponents in one shot.
Because blue players steal or copy it and black players reanimate it, it isn't annoying by itself but when there are 40 of these doofuses in one game its kind of lame.
It has a centralizing effect on the game. There has been a lot of discussion about it in the Ban List Discussion Thread, and I believe the Rules Committee gave their rationale for banning it in the ban announcement on the official EDH forums.
In a 4 player game, he's ALWAYS a 6-for-1. Now imagine that thanks to clone and karmic guide, it happens three times in a game. (This is nothing compared to what happens when deadeye navigator is around, by the way.)
Now imagine that your two other opponents are ALSO playing him, and you aren't. I'm glad it's gone.
