I don't really know how people come up with decklists for EDH with all those old cards, I am kind of stabbing in the dark here 'cause I have no idea what cards to choose for my EDH deck, btw it is mono-green. So any ideas for where I can look for mono green cards good for EDH? Btw kind of a noob here.
http://www.mtgsalvation.com/forums/the-game/commander-edh/203883-the-top-50-list-week-2-red-creatures has a list of good green cards, or at least the ones most often used in EDH. Also, the Commander Decklist Database has tons of mono green decks. I'd recommend starting browsing with decks of your general but then also looking at others of similar generals because most mono green decks are similar in strategy.
Gatherer is also a big help. Sometimes just typing in a vague search for something you want your deck to do will help you stumble on some random card. There is also the Hidden Gem thread.
If you are new to the format you can just use the Green cards you currently own, throw together a deck and as you see good cards for your deck, you can make notes to acquire them as you go.
The top 50's are a good resource as are gatherer, both mentioned above.
You can also chose a general and then search the forums for your General's name and peruse various lists for cards you think will work well in your list.
another key is just experience - ive been playing an embarassingly long time, and that means i know about a much larger card pool than a player starting today.
try to read up on some primers, read up on staples and hidden gems, then start reading other peoples lists. you'll often discover people have pet cards that they love to play, and you will learn more and more as you go
If you're looking for big old green stompy, some fun cards are:
Azusa, Lost But Seeking + Oracle of Mul Daya + Courser of Kruphix + Boundless Realms = You like lands? Play all the ones in your deck!
Primalcrux + Karametra's Acolyte + Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx = More mana for you!
Avenger of Zendikar + Rampaging Baloths + Nissa, Worldwaker + all those lands = Value town! I heard these guys like lands.
Brawn = I heard trample is good with huge fatties.
Kalonian Twingroves/Maro = You have a lot of forests? That makes these guys happy.
And while you're making a deck with so many trees, why not throw a few treefolk in there?
For instance, Timber Protector is a fun EDH card to make your trees (both creatures and Forests) indestructible.
For a laugh, throw Wood Elemental in there. (Always fun to have a card that vies for "Worst card ever printed" in your deck.)
Anyways, just use a search function and look for green creatures with high power and trample, then look for a few ramp spells, etc etc. You'll get the hang of it quickly.
Really, a mono-green EDH deck is pretty easy. Ramp, play fatties, beat down. If your meta is really competitive, then you might look at getting into another color. (RG is nice, because the manabase is relatively cheap compared to anything including blue.)
Mono-green pretty much plays itself - as has been said, they key things you want are ramp and mana. Make sure you have ~36 lands, and then a proper curve. you want a bunch of creatures under 3CMC, dorks, etc. I'd say just throw together a deck with what you have, play a few games at your LGS, then discover what you're lacking. Artifact/enchantment removal is usually something people forget about, but green is all about that. Reclamation Sage, Bane of Progress, Krosan Grip.

Club Flamingo Wins: 1!
I like filling my mono-green deck with lots of legendary cards, so anyone can helm the deck depending on my mood. Seton, Krosan Protector, Kamahl, Fist of Krosa, and Omnath, Locus of Mana are key.
Also be careful of flying creatures, they can be green's downfall. I'd run Crushing Vines and Tornado Elemental.

Arashi, the Sky Asunder is also damned effective at this.
figure out stuff that's synergistic with your strategy and search for it. Eventually you just know all the cards, and that saves time.
Also the top cards thread is an easy resource, although ofc some of those only work well in certain decks.
