That wasn't sarcasm. Alot of the artifacts you could copy are redundate. The only good ones to copy are: Trading Post, Mindslaver (which I recently took out), and maybe three others.
Rings allows you to copy lands. And allows you to go infinite without a third piece. This card honestly isn't very good.

Unless you can turn red mana into colorless no you can't.
There are actually quite a few, but often times those cards are not good unless they are copied. Which means making him as a Commander is probably fine, that's the only situation in which he'll be good. If I throw him into my Slobad Deck, or my Karn deck even, he would be close to very bad.
Copying Planar Portal's active is less winmore. Most infinite combos I have found require at least two pieces for the deck, you will not always have the pieces you need since the deck is mono red and not something like WUB. Since red has pretty terrible card draw as it is in addition to having very few tutors outside of tribal like Goblins or Dwarves, you take what you can get.
This card is an infinite combo with several 1 cards - Basalt Monolith and Grim Monolith to name 2.
There are a lot of artifacts that have non-redundant effects you can play with it.
He costs a red to activate and so it breaks them from being infinite on their own because you will run out of red. It is possible to filter it though but difficult.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Of course he generates you value, but only with some pretty specific cards to avoid being win-more. In which case, you are playing a sub-par card in order to gain some slight advantage.
Personally, its not for me. I understand some people love it, but I just don't see it. It is crippling that it can only copy artifacts. Rings gains a huge leg up on this card because of that. I only play Rings because it gains tons of card advantage AND it can combo off. This card only does one of those things and not very well at that.
Personally, I think I'll enjoy poking around with this ability. Might even make a deck around him. Of course, that'll mean picking up another copy of Mindless Automaton, which is going to be lots of fun with him.
My only issue is that he reminds me a lot of Talrand, Sky Summoner where if he gets tucked or answered a lot things just wont go well. I also see issues with over extension into things like Austere Command as a potential issue.
I'd much rather have this, this narrows deck building slightly and gives him a flavorful identity, also it costs R instead of 2 which I prefer if I'm just using him to get value instead of making big plays.
Did some playtesting on cockatrice. Results were...
1) Kurkesh copying Tawnos's Coffin active ability to exile two separate generals, forcing their controller's to put them back into the command zone and leave them in the command zone until they could deal with the coffin.
3) Barl's Cage works wonders if you got the mana. For just a single mana more on activation you can keep two creatures tapped down.
4) Erratic Portal suddenly becomes more of a nuisance to deal with as you can bounce Kurkesh and one of your other creatures out of the way from single target or sweeper removal.
5) Keening Stone gets stupid good. In the game when I had it out I had lucked out into also getting a Rings of Brighthearth and Stronic Resonator that game (opening hand and subsequent draws). In one turn I activated the stone, copied it with kurkesh, copied kurkesh's coping with resonator, copied the copying from resonator with rings, and copied the stone's active with rings. So for 11R, I targeted one guy who had eleven cards in his grave. The first resolved activation milled him for 11 cards (22 in grave), the second resolved activation milled him for 22 (44 in grave), the third resolved activation milled him for 44 (88 in grave). As for the fourth and fifth activation I directed it at a different player who had 6 in their graveyard, fourth activivation of stone milled other guy for 6 (12 in grave) and finally the fifth activation of stone milled the other guy for 12 (24 in graveyard).
6) Sculpting Steel + Disrupting Scepter + Kurkesh = RAGE... and I do mean rage from other people. As When it was ready all I had to do was pay 6RR during my turn to make a person discard four of their cards in hand. One of these people was playing a combo deck who had been assembling the pieces in his hand. Sculpting another scepter was just a bit winmore and without it, it would still work well for 3R as suddenly this mono red player is forcing people to discard two cards a turn by using various artifacts.
7) Yes in one game I got a infinite combo going off in which I did over 120 damage off in a 4-way multiplayer game from a Rocket Launcher by using Voltaic Key + Gilded Lotus.
See, all of those cards would be pretty bad in any other deck. And Kurkmesh makes those cards good and those cards make him good. Most decks will be unable to utilize him properly.

Many generals are like that. Highly specific. Is he optimal? Probably not. Will he be interesting for a few games? Probably. Someone will like him.
I mean that he's not going to be a staple for red. He's only good when you build around him.
...I guess I'm not seeing where someone said he was going to be a staple for red. He's a very cool, very playable general that gives red an option it really didn't have before. No offense to Slobad, but he's not what most people want out of a general, especially if they're going to be building around him.
Which means... horror of horrors, you have to take your general into consideration when evaluating cards to put in your deck? However will we survive?
Sarcasm aside, personally I'd rather his effect be really good with an exclusive group of cards than blanket good with everything. One encourages goodstuff in a general, the other encourages selecting cards for their synergy.
Whats also neat about Kurkesh is he helpful anyway to Slobad deck as part of one of the other 99. As Slobad decks tend to have a lot of interaction artifacts that have activated abilities anyway. Kurkesh also plays ball with Bosh, Iron Golem. Kurkesh is not an outright staple, but he can be used in other decks that actually do have a place for him as Kurkesh does help out with strategies that work with his triggered ability.
Which is why he is also pretty unique as a general. Sure its "another" artifact focused deck, but its got an actual unique spin on the premise. Things like Barl's Cage, Disrupting Scepter, and other cards are like you said, pretty bad. I agree, as no deck would want to use "sub-par" choices. Yet when your in red's shoes, this is like a kid in a candy store. Suddenly a whole new avenue just opened up for red in EDH, a narrow avenue, but a new one none the less.
Is he the end-all-be-all red general that the player base has been pining for years? Nope. Is there a different general that could fill his shoes? Not exactly, there is Slobad and Bosh but just like those two he brings a slightly different plan than them. Where Slobad excels at the preservation of key artifacts, where Bosh excels at dealing damage with artifacts... Kurkesh excels at making use of artifacts that were considered gems along with artifacts that were considered garbage. Plus its also what made him fun to build from my experience as you actually have to look through the gatherer and/or cockatrice to find artifacts that work with him, instead of just shifting maybe 1-10 cards at most from a preexisting deck list to accommodate this new legend. That and finding artifacts like Disrupting Scepter (3R, T: During your turn only, target player discards two cards from their hand.) is such a bizarre yet wonderful experience to actually be finding some gems that work well with this new general named Kurkesh.
I know I am personally going to get me three physical copies of Kurkesh. One for the Slobad deck as I can actually see a use for him there, one for the Bosh deck for obvious reasons, and one where he is at the helm of his own deck. Though this will mean that I will also need to get another copy of Slobad and Bosh each for the new deck I am going to construct for Kurkesh.

Copying things like Planar Portal and Kuldotha Forgemaster are win-more. You don't need to copy those to win.

Forgemaster is nowhere in the realm of a "win more" card.

Not if your artifacts aren't producing red.
