So my LGS is having a regional EDH tournament, not sure what to play, or if I just save my $10 entry fee for a latte and a brownie at Starbucks(<---- probably the best answer)
In my meta, games run long, so I was thinking if I were to use that to my advantage, make a deck that builds life and controls, what would be the best strategy... Oloro comes to mind, but how would I set it up to stop various threats and milk the timer?
Is this a good idea?
I would really like to hear from people who play for "blood" often in a similar multi-player set up, and I realize many are against this entirely, and I respect that, but if I decide to go for it, I need some sound advice and not 20 posts saying how it violates the "spirit" of EDH. (and seriously, much respect to those guys who hate this idea of murdering the spirit of EDH, half of my heart goes with you... but I also kinda want to see what I can do, hope you understand)

At my LGS the Commander players are split into two groups: those of us who play in a League every week, and the randoms who just play pick up games. Being in the former group, I cannot say what types of decks the second group plays, but I will say that in the league, we are all pretty decent adhering to the mythical "Spirit of EDH". However....
Every few months the store will hold a Commander tournament. I've never been able to attend, but I heard from people in my group who did attend that Hermit Druid.dec was in strong attendance both times. Moral of the story from my anecdotal evidence: prepare for degeneracy, not what your meta usually does.
Oloro Ad Nauseam combo can almost rival Hermit Druid in degeneracy. Dorino's Sygg list is now Oloro and ctmastercard has a list in the 1v1 forums that uses the regular ban list. Both mostly focus on using Ad Naus to then storm for Tendrils of Agony. They might be the fastest, most efficient versions. I run a version that is a lot less committed to being completely degenerate (but getting close). If you look at my list be sure to check the last page of the thread for my current tests. I got some games in today and I liked what I saw.
If you don't want to be as degenerate as any of that I would suggest Oloro with a heavy control package (10 or so counters plus other bounce, wipes, tucks and spot removal), good artifact ramp, and value creatures (either strong ETB or reusable abilities). You can close games out with a big Debt to the Deathless or, if you don't mind being a little degenerate, Temple Bell + Mind Over Matter (need an Eldrazi legend). Or lock the board with Teferi + Pool. Or try to go with stuff like Felidar Sovereign and Test of Endurance. There are a lot of options really.
I'm in the same play group as Trancer and share his concerns about what an organized event like this might unleash. I've played in a few of the 4 man pods at GP's and SCG Opens and there's almost always 2 guys in the same pod teaming up.
Cryo I'm curious for the tournaments in your area are the rounds timed? The TO for the upcoming event has stated rounds will have a 1 hour time limit which to me seems very short; especially for 4 player pods.
I will not be playing in this tournament due to foresight. The field will be primarily UG/x decks, with outliers in Esper, Mono-U, B/x combo and Kaalia. With prizes (of any kind) on the line it will be a bloodsport. I feel sorry for some of the people that will sign up for this event thinking it's for fun and getting rolled by a constant stream of BUG, Bant and RUG. However I will step off of my soapbox now.
For you Trancer, Oloro Doomsday or Hermit Druid would be your best bet. I do have another suggestion on the matter. Maralen of the Mournsong. There are two similar combo builds that you can work with.
Maralen option B: Sickening Dreams combo: 96 Swamp, Dark Sphere, Sickening Dreams, Ad Naus. It's a decent ninja-combo but not the best option. It lacks a way to play maralen without having her ability table and losing you the game in the process. And it's slow, turn 7-8 unless you draw Ad Naus early.
I have the majority of the stuff for option A in one of my boxes/in decks if you want to proxy up the missing pieces and run it out. Good Luck in the tourney and hope you do well.

If you can get a decent storm count you cast Tendrils before YawgWin. That way you can cast Tendrils twice.
Testing the deck on Trice I was able to stay above 20 life, on AD Naus, and wound up with a storm count of 40+ before YawgWin. I will need to look on gatherer to check for 0, and X cost artifacts to add to the list. Except for Crypt it's fairly cheap as a whole. I did cut bubbling muck for Exsanguinate in the KCI version. Rain of Filth can get you there on the combo turn. I can post the list if anyone is interested in seeing the whole thing.

Is this for Maralen or Oloro (or something else)?
In either case check out this list for ideas. He runs a bunch of zero cost artifact creatures that combined with Culling the Weak and YawgWin raise your storm count by 2 and produce 8 black mana each. Cast, sac, cast Yawg, cast again then sac again. With those 4 plus just YawgWin you can get 9 storm count and produce 32 black mana. Obviously you want to do things a little differently to maximize but you get the idea.
Also, and I'm pretty sure I know the answer, the copies of Tendrils don't count for storm for a second casting of Tendrils do they?
Oloro seems like a fair smoke screan, but if you get stuck Maralen can find you Ad Nauseam.
Then again Hermit druid can be faster...
I just don't know if its worth being that guy, we have already established its probably not going to be fun for most, not to mention I have no practice playing ANT or Hermit.
Oloro ANT would be interesting, being in blue gives you Hurkyll's Recall, Rebuild and Retract. Unfortunately there are no U or W mana rituals.
You could always play Food Chain Prossh Storm. Max out early acceleration and tutors, drop Food Chain, cast Prossh and win with either a huge dragon, token army or storm count.

There may be no UW rituals but there is High Tide.
But...most Oloro ANT builds I've seen are very, very heavy black.
The questions still remains, is Oloro ANT faster and more resilient than the Hermit? Many more tutors with the Hermit, but he is subject to creature removal. Also, this is 4 man pods not 1vs1, so ANT could run out of gas mid-swing.
For added consistency Grim Tutor, Cruel Tutor and likewise low CMC tutors could be added.
How to operate this monstrosity:
The basic idea is to cast and resolve Ad Nauseam as soon as possible. AdNaus will allow you to flip your deck over into your hand at the cost of life equal to the CMC of each card. From AdNaus flips you will lose WCS 24 life if my math serves, often it will be less. After 'drawing' until you feel the need to stop or no cards in library you begin adding to your storm count. Play all the 0 cmc artifacts, leaving Chalice of the Void for last. Following that cast any unused Rituals in hand, KCI then Ring and Vault. Storm Count at this point is 46. At this point with 9ish Black Mana floating you can cast Tendrils and outright kill 2 opponents. Following that sacrifice all artifacts in play to KCI for 80 Colorless 5 Black floating in pool. WCS your lifetotal is 110. From there to clear out your remaining opponent(s) Sickening Dreams, Exsanguinate or Yawgmoth's Will to effectively double your current storm count and Tendrils again.
The strength of this deck is dependent on how fast you can go off. Its not impossible for turn 1 wins. The average goal for this deck is turn 3 at the latest, but due to variance this is difficult. One solution is more tutors or even gods forbid casting Maralen. Casting Maralen can be a gamble and smart players will get their use out of it then deal with it. That fact is mitigated by the ability to potentially cast her at EOT so you benefit and win that turn. You will need to mulligan aggressively at times to find at least one tutor or early game acceleration. The partial paris rule helps this deck more than any other. Throwing back storm fodder for the potential to steal the game make it all worthwhile. I do advise NOT getting every card in your library on the combo turn, just in case someone can make you draw a card to kill you midcombo. One of the best ways to look at this deck is as a Vintage TPS/Grim Long for EDH. If you have anymore questions or need to see it work just let me know and I'll walk you through the whole thing.

I overheard the guys running the tourney at the LGS say, they were going to add a rule, no infinite combos before turn 5, so that is going to make things a bit tougher on fast combo decks. So, so far it looks like this:
- 1 hour time limit, highest life wins at the end.
- no infinite combos before turn 5.
If the no infinite before turn 5 rule is in effect it might be better to run more resilient slower combo decks like Arcum, Sharuum or Damia... maybe even Azami.
I've heard 'no winning before turn 4' and now no infi combo before turn 5. I'll check with the guys running it on Friday night just to get a clear picture on what the rule is. Hell, if I can borrow LED, Crypt, Diamond and Opal I might just play in the tourney.

They keep changing the rules, I will have to go without the super expensive ones, guess turn 4 is still early enough, to not encounter too much resistance.
If people are running Marlaen/Ad Nauseam then run Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. It makes all their 0 mana dorks cost 1, Exsanguinate costs 1BBX, Tendrils costs 5 then 1 for every storm copy. I ran this at a local LGS for "Ad Nauseam Christmas" and very nearly made it out of the pod, the other Erebos player (Ad Nauseam was on Erebos) killed Thalia early and the Thorn of Amethyst in my hand got Duressed.

Highest life total if everyone dies you have the highest right? Just combo out with Mike&Trike or Kiki-Conscripts. Sorry but this is going to be my answer. Multiplayer EDH + competative events just dont work together regardless of how they are sanctioned. My suggestion would be to pick up games for fun and just ignore the tourney. I was playing games for fun at the GP two weeks back and one of the guys I had fun playing with literally almost rage quit magic after going through a 4 man prize structure pod.
If you are going to go into an event like this you better be ready to break the format in all the wrong ways and be ready for the same to happen to you.

Great post man(as always), and I agree with you $100, I am just having a hard time saying no to a full Saturday of nothing but EDH. My meta has been struggling with EDH to keep it afloat as we have many younger players who think standard is fun, and simply don't have the attention span to do anything that last for more than 2.5 minutes.
I had a good friend tell me to just go and play Pheldagrif, and troll the whole table, he said it would be at least worth $10 of fun to hose the competitive's and help the casuals. I am still thinking on this one, I might just do that, or maybe play something like Galspanic's winless Oloro.
I have been trying for weeks to make my Derevi deck more competitive, and the more competitive I make it, the less I want to play it, I have started playing a thrown together Mimeoplasm deck, with no combo's just basic goodstuffs, and I am having so much more fun. Maybe bant is not my color.

qft - cowboy bepop is right. Cut throat it will get. I have played on MTGO, and people rage if you destroy 1 of their lands.... I have seen people rage quit to a turn 2 bribery or a turn 3/4 Mind twist their entire hand away. Combo in, combo out, or play police to win.

For you Trancer, Oloro Doomsday or Hermit Druid would be your best bet. I do have another suggestion on the matter. Maralen of the Mournsong. There are two similar combo builds that you can work with.
Maralen option A: Ad Nauseum Tentrdrils. It plays ALL (format legal) CMC 0 and X, XX and XXX cost artifacts. The non-basic lands you run are Glacial Chasm, Winding Canyons and Lake of the Dead. You run Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Cabal Ritual, Dark Ritual, Culling the Weak, Sickening Dreams, Exsanguinate Ad Nauseum, Yawgmoth's Will and Krark-Clan Ironworks. The very basic way to win is ritual out Ad Naus, draw deck play out all 'free' artifacts and KCI. Sac everything to KCI, cast YawgWill, replay yard except Ad Naus, With the massive amount to floating mana Tendrils, and/or Exanguinate then finish off anyone left standing with Sickening Dreams.

- 1 hour time limit, highest life wins at the end.
- no infinite combos before turn 5.
If the no infinite before turn 5 rule is in effect it might be better to run more resilient slower combo decks like Arcum, Sharuum or Damia... maybe even Azami.
Ideas?

I have 3 of the 4 you need. And I'd just want to see what you would do.
I buy HP and Damaged cards!

They keep changing the rules, I will have to go without the super expensive ones, guess turn 4 is still early enough, to not encounter too much resistance.

Do you come down to Charleston much? Are you planning on trying to make the tourney?
