I have read the numerous threads about pro and/or anti combo/MLD/etc decks. However, I couldn't relate to many of the stories as I am only able to play once a week for a few hours (and usually that is 1 game).
I found an article by Sheldon Menery (Q & A Time Again!). This question was proposed:
Q: In my playgroup, while we haven't banned any cards that weren't already on the official ban list, there are certain strategies that we simply acknowledge shouldn't be played more than once in a blue moon, such as mass land destruction and prison decks. Are there any such strategies in your metagame that are generally discouraged even if not explicitly forbidden?
A: Only hyper-fast combo and MLD. They'll both get you negative points in the League (as will taking too many turns in a row and drawing more than 10 cards in a turn cycle).
Quick background: As stated earlier, I am very limited in playing MTG. On Thursday Night EDH, people show up and form groups and play. There is the usually crowd (mainly college students) and 1-2 randoms every week. I am in my late 20s, married, and have a decent career. My only 2 friends I knew outside of magic have quit coming due to time contraints, work, family/married/children life, etc --- but also because of.... hygiene issues and attitudes of the college students. What I mean is some of the guys have no voice control, no sensor, still play pokemon, and no social skills (interupt every conversation for example). But this isn't my issue.
Some of the college guys all go to school together and mainly play with each other. They have highly tuned decks with perfect mana bases (ABU and all fetches). Most of the time, I don't play with them as they start before I get there from work. So I play with the other guys (some random / casuals) which I do not know any of them personally --- so it is hard to talk to them (without them getting mad) about threat assessment and not comboing off. The other week I even said "cool, you combo'ed off and win. We will play for 2nd place."
I am not sure how to handle this anymore as the power level between decks are huge...heck even some of the new guys are even proxying ABU duals and fetches....!!!!....!!!

Group Hug:
There's 2-3 guys that love love LOVE to run group hug - especially without a win con. Just 5 color groupHug.goodstuff hippo decks. Turn 3/4 Ulamog hardcasted is easy to come by. Guess I should just create a deck that works well with grouphug? No idea as they do what they want.
PS - seeing how I can only play once a week, it seems that I am better off selling paper to play MTGO. I don't even go to FNM anymore. Already sold all my modern decks (except for cards needed for EDH --- who needs 6 Aether Vials?)

That's what I'd recommend. You'll still have occasional bad games but most are fun and you can play whenever you like.
