What is the best Green White/X commander? I have a G/W token deck I have all of the lands to support G/W and it would not be a big deal to get another dual/shock/Fetch lands for another color. I was going to make a 5 color deck but this is the best way for me to build to that eventually. I have all of the other non G/W staples Crucible of worlds, Strip Mine etc.
I have a heavily tuned Rhys, The Redeemed token deck that my new playgroup is afraid of, Constant T5 Craterhoofs for 10 will do that to people lol. I am looking to add a third color and move away from the token strategy.
I'm biased, but I adore Marath, Will of the Wild for just about everything. He can play as a token-aggro deck, a token-combo deck, an agressive aggro or aggro/midrange deck, or even a Naya control deck.
But the color you add really depends on what strategy you want to use, other than tokens.
Adding blue takes you to Bant, which is typically tempo, control, and blink/ETB style decks.
Adding red gives you Naya, where you have a wider variety of token decks, as well as some battlecruiser and aggro strategies.
Black gives you Necra for reanimator shenanigans, as well as tempo/stax and aggro.
There's a wider array of strategies for those combinations, but that's what I could come up with off of the top of my head.
Bant: You need U/G and U/W fetches and shocks. Not cheap but that doesn't seem to be your problem. Also, optimal cards like Bribery, Pact of Negation, etc. are going to run you a pretty penny. The upside is that you get Prohpet of Krufix and Deadeye Navigator. Also, you can build U/B and U/W decks in the future.
Necra: You need B/W and B/G fetches and shocks. Cheaper and they make for more interesting commander choices down the line. You get B/W and B/G decks later should you decide to scrap the three color deck for a while. Also, the staples that make necra decks run aren't nearly as expensive as the blue staples. Ghave wants to see Doubling Season and maybe Necropotence, but they are both reasonable purchases in my opinion.
Money is not really a problem I have lots of cards and I can trade for what I need or just buy them. What are the best necra commanders Robtheman, also Airithine is Mayael competetive I guess I should have stated I have 2 play groups one is super cuthroat the other is just beginners which is where I ran into a problem with my Rhys
She can be. She can be cast early, and you can get around control decks with her ability.
If you're looking for lists I would start with the primer and then branch out.
A warning with Necra: if you're having issues with your second playgroup, it can be pretty oppressive. Karador, Ghost Chieftain and Ghave, Guru of Spores are both decent but your other group may not enjoy them. I think you need to just build a second deck at the power level of that group, rather than try and live in both worlds with one deck.
Derevi can amass large amounts of both tangible and hypothetical card advantage with just the simplest of engines. Using Derevi as a card draw, mana ramp, vigilance, or land denial is really powerful. Green and white can take care of most permanents by themselves and blue adds a few more options and stack control.
Ghave is the best Necra commander. The ability to use Ghave as token engine, sacrifice engine, and combo engine all at once is impressive. He can be random counters themed tokens, themed, combo themed, planeswalker themed, or goodstuff with equal success and is often multiples at once. Black will give you some valuable tutors and low investment card draw engines as well as some of the best spot removal in the game.
GWR isn't as strong as GWB or GWU don't bother with Naya if you're looking for the best of the best. There are other good commanders in Bant and Necra but Ghave and Derevi are just so much better than the other options - in my opninion.
Both of those commanders feel like they could be tuned to be backbreacking and also where I could hold back play a little bit for the newer playgroup to let games develop and see interaction.
Have you thought of running Treva, Palladia-Mors, or Arcades Sabboth? If you don't want to scare a new playgroup away, I would recommend one of these three within G/W/X coloration scheme. After all, if you want to keep friends sometimes its a much more enjoyable experience to play with a lower tier general instead.
If you want something simple and which can be built around but also isn't too General-dependent, I'd try either Tolsimir Wolfblood or Jenara, Asura of War.
Doran, the Siege Tower is very good G/W/B General. He needs specific play and creature cards, but that doesn't really matter. You don't need to go tribal with him, there is a lot of other cards which have higher toughens than attack power.
Also, black gives you access to stuff as reanimation, nice card draw (Phyrexian Arena), and really cool board wipes, such as Damnation, Mutilate, Living Death.
I personally think that black is the strongest color in EDH, combined with green ramp, white exiles and protections, these color combo can bring real havoc to the battlefield.
My personal favorites, in no particular order: Derevi - Stasis/Untap unfriendly skies Jen - Hyperbantcontrol, Jen is main wincon Angus - Proliferate Planeswalkers Karametra - Mass Creature Swarm (50+ creatures) Sisay - Legendary Toolbox/goodstuff (deconstructed due to lack of variability) Trostani - Casual funstuff with a dose of gw-tokens Ghave - Built and rebuilt several different ways, several more fun than others
I have had versions of all of the above and enjoyed them highly with each deck having a distinctly different feel than the others. I still maintain several of the above actively. Good luck. I'm a very 'bant'-y player and my opinions and playstyle come with that bias admitted, not that I can't enjoy other colors but I recognize and actively look to use green and/or blue in almost every deck with white being a close third and black in fourth. I rarely more than splash red and I prefer to win via the attack phase but only after the game is firmly under control. I highly enjoy bant's combination of green for resource management, green and white for effective permanent management, and blue for effective spell and card advantage management.
Finally, if you want to challenge yourself then do not add black as a third color, it offers far too consistent tutors and the decks that are financially supported and well tuned with black will not be decks that tend to present a high degree of variety in the way they play out. I highly suggest, instead, using blue for it's obvious card advantage power in draw while knowing that the more random nature of those draws will create a diverse and complex set of unique scenarios with which to challenge your deck. This remains true on almost any attempted power level too.
All three G/W/X color combos can be fun and/or powerful, depending on the commander and how you build the deck.
Naya: Probably the weakest overall, but also gives you access to Uril, the Miststalker, who is arguably the most powerful voltron commander in any color combination. I don't think Naya is really worth going for unless you're either playing Uril or building a casual deck, though.
Junk: Junk has arguably the best removal of any color combo, lots of good combos and engines, and several powerful commanders. Ghave is a top-tier combo general. Karador is awesome as dredge, combo, or just a grindy card advantage deck. Doran is also very good in smaller groups or 1v1 as an aggro general, so keep that in mind.
Bant: Bant is the quintessential goodstuff color combo, where every card in your deck is very powerful and provides tons of value and you win by just grinding out card and tempo advantage over the course of the game until you're so far ahead that your opponents can't hope to catch up. All of the bant generals lend themselves to this strategy to an extent, with each one focusing on a slightly different approach. Rafiq is an excellent voltron general, and can also do enchantress or control. Derevi works well as an aggro-control or control general. Jenara can do all of the above.
I think your biggest problem is going to be running a tuned list against your more casual playgroup. If you're not holding back with Rhys against them, adding a color may not be enough.
Again, I would consider maybe keeping your Rhys deck, and putting together a more casual deck for the second playgroup.
Your choice to add a third color is a good one. Once you go three color, you never go back! But really though, I could never play less than 3 colors.
Most of the people responding have got it very right.
Run Derevi, Empyrial Tactician to turn your tokens into card advantage, vigilance, mana and oppression. The best option in my opinion.
Run Ghave, Guru of Spores to combo and use your tokens for stax effects. I had a great Ghave stax deck once, but it definitely won't make you friends in a casual scene.
Run Marath, Will of the Wild if you want simple tokens and wraths and whatever red does (??). I run a casual Marath deck, but it's not terribly strong, I just run every hate card ever and use Marath to bolt creatures.
I'm sure you can start to see with everyone's recommendations that these are your best options. Best of luck and let us know what you decide!
