MTG Salvation

So I have a friend who sort of love-hates EDH, and he wants to build a deck whose sole purpose is not trying to win, but rather trying to get grindy multiplayer games to end as soon as possible. Lol.

I recommended him cards that prevent life gain and deal constant damage, such as Havoc Festival, Witch Hunt, and Sulfuric Vortex. I also recommended Grand Melee and Avatar of Slaughter, since they force everything to attack and prevent (or at least hinder) durdling.

I'm hoping to get more tips on cards that help games end FAST, and thank you in advance for your tips!

P.S. What would some good generals be for this sort of strategy?

He should definitely run Heartless Hidetsugu and all damage doublers like Furance of Rath and Gratuitous Violence.

5-color Hermit Druid to end the game turn one.

Nekusar gets games to end quickly.

Some people play EDH so they can actually enjoy a long drawn out social game. Maybe the best way for him is to not play at all? If he does build this I'm betting people will say "gg" and move into the next game without him. Or he could just build a degenerate combo deck full of 2 card combos and ways to tutor them up. Something with tooth and nail into Kiki/pestermite should end the game quickly (and by the end game quickly I mean piss people off ;))

On second thought what I said isn't fair. It's perfectly within someone's right to play strategies that end games quickly. Maybe he could play some kind of aggro strategy? Rafiq Voltron or Kaalia both end games quickly.

Bedlam will help ensure life totals go down quickly.

Hehe, my personal favorite card for this is Jinxed Choker. Its insane how quickly the damage can ramp up on it in a multiplayer game.

Both Wound Reflection and Vicious Shadows reside in my Kaervek deck and speed games along - either by winning or getting me killed quickly.

Either way, fast games.

Strong Nekusar decks tend to push very fast games, either by killing everyone or giving them a ton of cards so that one of them wins quickly. Either way they game tends to end by turn 6-7.

It has to be a R/B base to play punisher.

Kaevek is a bit expensive. What about Rakdos, lord of riots is good if you are intending to be flinging damage around hits really quite hard for little mana.

Nekasaur is a good option for three colour.

Maelstrom Wanderer is a nice option too. It can finish games fairly quickly when Wanderer drops, and the randomness it has to it is a lot of fun. Can't go wrong with that general if you want to have fun and stomp hard

I had a jund deck that did just that. It was a mix of group hug and punisher. Lots of cards like:

• Spiteful Vision
  

If left alone, Purphoros, God of the Forge can take everyone down at once.

For generals, my first thought was Gisela, Blade of Goldnight, who has a tendency to enable one swing commander kills.

Maralen of the Mornsong seems like she would enable other players getting their combos online.

I have to go with the other people here recommending combo. It really does end the game quickly, and also forces the other players at the table to really rethink their strategies to be able to combat it. I'm a big fan of allowing it, I think it adds a depth and weight to the format that battlecruiser games just tend to lack. And, if you're playing with blue you can get a perfect hand and end the game turn 0, @ your first opponents first upkeep ^.^

Combo decks, basically. My Azami deck (sorry no online list) plays a lazy mother-may-I for a large majority of the game, until it can either durdle to victory (Deadeye Navigator + Master of Waves lol), or I'm ready to combo out. The deck has many combos but I never really gun towards any of them except for in a competitive environment.

Like FireStorm4056 said in his Niv-Mizzet primer-to-be, Combo is fine, just
1. Don't win too quickly,
2. Don't deny any and all interaction with the game
3. Try to win with a bit of flair, not linear 2 card combos.
The second two might sound strange coming from Azami, but I try to steer away from my Mind Over Matter as much as possible in casual games.

Long story short, combos will end the game when need be. Green is a good example. It's powerful as is but if need be you can Tooth and Nail for the win. (I'm not a fan of T&N because if someone doesn't win, then I feel like they pulled a punch and I'm not for that.)

I put these three cards in every deck possible, these are my "let's get this over with", 1-card combos when I'm in a losing position. Of course, it's nowhere near auto-win, but with good timing you can easily pull yourself from the brink.
