Sometimes though, I am pleasantly surprised when the player has a different take on a popular general. I myself have such a deck, a Riku of Two Reflections deck that focuses on Epic Experiments and Genesis Waves rather than a generic RUG good stuff deck.
I have a friend who plays !Kaalia which means that Kaalia was the best choice of the 3 RBW generals and he wanted to play RBW Enchantment Control
It is funny because I think he does have 2 targets (Master of Cruelties & Angel of Despair) but people often get terrified of Kaalia only to be overwhelmed by what the deck really does.
In that way the deck is a very bait and switch with the general.
I'm not sure how different it is from the norm outside of my LGS, but I have a Kresh the Bloodbraided deck based entirely around ETB triggers, and the card Sneak Attack. Most builds where I play end up being Jund goodstuff.
That's actually an idea I've been throwing around in my head for the longest time. Copied pump spells sound like insane fun. It's never really gotten off the ground for me, as without built-in evasion or protection, Riku's just too fragile.

That's part of what interests me about the idea, the challenge of it. What's kept me from building a Riku deck so far is the obviousness of most builds.
I find My Sharuum Deck is fairly original. It is designed for casual play, so it is not hated off the board immediately. (First time yea, but afterwards, no.)
It is based more on shenanigans than good stuff. The deck can actually take quite a few turns to go off, and can be disrupted. The deck itself has about 20 win cons, which is its main attraction, as you may waste all your cards to stop win and I win with a different one. I can in fact pull off 2 win cons in a single turn. (i sometime get dead draws, but for my group, its has a decent win rate 1:1
Actually I would Say all my decks are fairly different as they are all tweaked to casual - semi competitive. So while you would expect Arcum to stop you dead turn 3. I have only pulled off the 3 flying haste blightsteels turn 3 once.
I love the idea for this thread. Lately I've been trying to come up with a deck idea for a Damia-led EDH deck. I don't want to merely play "good stuff" because I get bored with such a non-strategy. The deck should have some sort of unique angle. So I am making a Damia "Deathtouch" & "Lure" deck.
I love the idea mentioned above of the Ruhan Sliver deck. Very cool.
I just finished an awesome game. It was Riku of Two Reflections, Sharuum the Hegemon, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, and Karador, Ghost Chieftain. Ho-hum, all popular generals - only, none of us had a "normal" build!
Mine was Riku spellslinger, Sharuum focused on trinkets (Auriok Salvagers, Salvaging Station, spellbombs, no combos), GAAIV was a storm (!!!) deck, and Karador ran every single Extort permanent and just pinged away with his every spell.
When myself and a few others were regularly sharing tech on the Sharuum primer, there was a guy who had a non-combo focused build that made use of Arcuum Dagson to tutor for all relevant control pieces he needed to advance his board.
It was the tightest thinking. I'd actually do it myself if I had room in my own build, or the creatures to aid it.

Thanks, Heroes of The Planes! You guys are great!

I'm currently working on a Roon of the Hidden Realm allies deck. I have no idea how well it'll work but I wanted a different take on the blinky etb theme.
I've been working on a Glissa, the Traitor land destruction deck that is getting some raised eyebrows and quite a few groans from the regulars at my LGS. Other than that most people tend to have predictable builds.

I've got a fever and the only prescription is more Kobolds. 5-color Eggs
Don't want to be that guy, but your meta has to be really small if Riku with Genesis Wave or spellslinger are considered different takes on this popular general.
The Azorius storm deck however I can't even imagine.
If I am playing Bant Creature Goodstuff, I will almost go straight after Lazav mill.
I have seen Sigarda and Kaalia get hated real earlier even if threat level is low. Same with cascade, cascade guy.....uggg when it cascades into 'everyone sacrifices all lands' lol
I"m playing a Mimeoplasm control deck because I got tired of the usual combo build. And it's a good way to fight off graveyard combos and goodstuff decks!
* Kaalia of the Vast being utilized for a deck that throws out things like Possibility Storm and Smoke which inconveniences the hell out of everyone else while Kaalia merrily skips by and drops fatty that's really difficult to deal with now that all semblance of responsive gameplay is a garbled, luck based mess.
* Scion of the Ur-Dragon "creature types matter" deck that includes few dragons of its own. Rather, it revolves around changing creature types.
* Sen Triplets deck focused around reanimating and cloning ETB creatures with really, really tight synergy. The Sen Triplets are merely the commanders for their colors and to mess around with people's ability to respond to his shenanigans.
I run a Solkanar, the Swamp King artifact deck. Most people assume I am just playing like normal Grixis control but when you drop clock of omens and a Prototype portal with an artifact land on it you get out of hand really quickly.
The first game I played it in the EDH league at the store I frequent I ended having 80 great forge's in play on like turn 6 because I had cloned someone's Prophet of Kurphenox or whatever it is.
I was trying to build a Momir Vig, Simic Visionary that was different but nothing is really catching fire like it does with the other decks.
I've seen a combo version but I dont want to be that guy and win on t5/6 ALL THE TIME. There is a druid/elf mix that seems eh, and there is a toolbox version that is ok but none of them seem that fun im looking for a new one as well.
I even posted a land destruction version that i was building but i didnt like it once it was built.
Anyone have any suggestions? I haven't thought about a tribal elf/wizard version of it but i wouldnt even begin where to start.
I have Jeleva, Mayael, and Derevri built, so im looking to add at least another one to my belt. If not Momir, then anyone else have an suggestions on fun and weird commander decks they have built?
You wouldn't think it would work but like, everyone not familiar with our group thinks the player's gonna spam extra turns and card draw like all the other melek decks only to hear "I play Screaming Fury copied and swing at you with Melek for 12".

I've seen Ruhan of the Fomori Slivers (focusing on making Ruhan a Sliver to get the bonuses), Maelstrom Wanderer that runs nothing less than 8cc aside from Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Pestermite (Blasphemous Act, Decree of Silence, etc.), Damia, Sage of Stone Voltron, and a whole lot that escape me right now.
What are the most unique and different takes that you guys have seen from popular generals?

I read Riku as Rafiq and my troll bells were going off. Good thing I'm just bad at reading.
I kind of want to make a Riku aggro deck, focusing on getting multiple copies of things that stack exponentially, like Wild Beastmaster and Master Biomancer. I also like the idea of things like Tandem Lookout into Hellrider or Purphoros, God of the Forge.
