Played it in my Selenia deck, was alot of fun, albeit incredibly risky and often a last resort.
I used it in a Selenia build as well, and I found it was actually too consistent. I had to dismantle the deck because its gameplan was pretty much this or Repay in Kind/Ad Nauseam/Angel's Grace.
This is a decent planeswalker. The first ability is minor ramp (although note that if you use it on a land you just played that turn it can't be tapped for mana). Second ability is a good late game ritual, and with something like Seedborn Muse the third ability could add up over a few turns.
Koth has fueled more game-winning JayaInfernos than I can honestly remember. The option of minor ramp or a small surprise swing from a recently torched board is plenty handy, too. Never managed to get that ult off- too busy burning loyalty counters into the ritual option- but basically being able to dump any leftover mana into damage at EoT sounds pretty sweet.
Opal-eye, Konda's Yojimbo ~ Rayne, Academy Chancellor ~ Toshiro Umezawa ~ Jaya Ballard, Task Mage ~ Yeva, Nature's Herald

I have planned to run Koth in several decks, but he has never quite made the cut. Which isn't to say he's bad, so much as he never seems to fit well enough into the sort of decks I end up building to justify taking a card spot away from something else. I don't see him run very often, either. As a result, I don't really have an experience base with which to rate him for EDH. I suspect he can be pretty good in some (probably mono-red) decks, but he seems pretty niche.
He's some of the best ramp mono-red has for getting to 8-10 mana quickly. I consider him almost an autoinclude when I build a mono-R deck. He can do some work in gruul ramp/landfall decks too, but I don't run him in any of my multicolor decks currently. Scapeshifting into Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle and a bunch of mountains is even more fun than before when you have Koth's emblem.

I think you meant "(although note that if you use it on a land you just played that turn you can't attack with it or tap it for mana)"
anyways.. one of my favorite walkers (since I am a red mage). Have won so many games with his ultimate (and only lost once with it)
Koth does some solid work in my Jaya Ballard deck. I don't think I've ever been sad to draw him.
I think he's just a big red ritual 75% of the time, but that's usually fine. When played early (like, turn 3 with a mana rock of some kind), he provides a neat little ramp effect while threatening a very powerful ultimate.
He has trouble finding a home outside of mono-red, but he's a great bit of value for the decks that run lots of Mountains.
Well, Koth of the Hammer definitely is in my Mono-Red deck, but I haven't had the opportunity to use him yet. In theory it would be ideal to get the emblem running, but seeing the posts here I'm convinced the reality is me using his ritual to accelerate my spell-casting process.
The only time I've seen Koth used for something other than mana-ritualing is in my friend's infamous "Planeswalkers and caustic tar" win condition, where the plus can untap a mountain (usually a Blood Crypt) enchanted with Caustic Tar to get in 3 more life lost. Or 12 more life lost.

Zedruu: "This deck is not only able to go crazy - it also needs to do so."
Koth puts in a lot of work for me in Godo, in spite of the fact that he doesn't really synergize with anything I'm trying to do in that deck. This leads me to believe he's a must have in mono R no matter what you're up to.

Koth is generally "just okay" in my mono-red Daretti Superfriends deck. Even with a chance to really go nuts with Chain Veil and proliferate he's usually just a ritual, but even that can help do stuff like windmill slam turn 5 Darksteel Forge :D. I think he's a 6/10 kind of card...if you're mono-R or close to it he's a perfectly solid workhorse, but he's rarely spectacular and could easily find himself cut in more tight, focused lists.

I see him as a stable of mono red. even if he never seems spectacular.
It is extremely easy to get him to ultimate and the your opponents will quickly die if you achieve it.
His -2 is also a nice little burst of mana for a big play when needed.
Oh he's a blast! If you're playing mono-red he's definitely at least a consideration. If you're playing goblins or something, he can be an explosive mana generator or a great finisher.

A big beater back in the day. These days.... still potentially a big beater, but a lot less interesting. Black has much better things to offer these days than big vanilla flyers, and CMC = 6 is a pretty competitive slot in all but the most unusual (or most haphazardly casual) decks. I suppose it might fit in some decks for theme reasons, but outside of that it offers little. I don't think I've ever seen it played in EDH, and I'd be somewhat surprised if I ever did encounter it in the format.
Squelching Leeches is the same thing without flying for 2 less. For these '*= number of lands you control' type cards, they seem to only work well with either Forests or if they count all your lands. Strata Scythe being an extremely popular choice in monocolored decks is a good example, and Dakkon Blackblade is a general with this type of effect.
I think the gold standard for this effect is Dungrove Elder. Only requirement to make it work is to run a lot of forests. Potentially a 4/4 on turn 3 that grows extremely fast over time with ramp. It is a threat that has to be answered quickly.
Ah, nostalgia. My first EDH deck was Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, and I ran all of the "swamps matter" cards, including this one. Of course, backed up by an all-swamp land base. Nightmare was my alternate beater if Korlash's tax became too high, supplemented of course by the classic Nightmare Lash to double up that flying swampy goodness.
I almost certainly wouldn't run it anymore, though for nostalgia's sake I might. Also works in both Nightmare and Horse tribal, though best in a "swamps matter" deck packing Corrupt and friends. Becomes ridiculously large if voltron'd up with Nightmare Lash, Lashwrithe, and Strata Scythe (though so does Korlash, who is the best of these cards still).
