I'm starting to get into Commander. I want to play EDH or PDH but I'm not sure which one is good for me. I've been playing since Birthing Pod was legal in Standard. Since I'm in between a novice and regular player, I'm not sure which deck would be easy and cheap enough to play. I'm not sure what's the limit on my budget yet.
PDH is definitely the better option if there are enough people who you can play it with. The problem is that not many people play PDH (compared to EDH).
If there are not enough PDH players you can play with, then you should play EDH. You can still make very budget decks with a commander like Uril, the Miststalker.
Normal edh decks can be built primarily with cards you have lying around then spending 50 or so to complete the deck. You won't have a blistering turn 3 or 4 combo deck but you can still have a fairly decent commander. And once it's built you can slowly upgrade the deck.
I don't know what PDH is so I can't offer refrence on that
Also, considering the new commander pre-constructed decks are coming out on the 1st of November for $30 each, you could definitely get a pre-made deck (if any of them suit you) and build a regular one from there on a budget or with existing cards you already have.
Yeah, I wouldn't recommend PDH to anyone just getting into the format since it'll be much harder to find a game. Playing PDH is fine on the side, but EDH is really not that expensive if you don't mind playing a deck that's not 100% tuned. The multiplayer aspect really balances that nicely since players won't target the weaker deck quite so much. Build well and play well and a cheap deck can win just as often.
I'll just play EDH for now but I don't want to spend too much on the non commander part of the deck. Commanders I might use are Liu Bei, Kongming (Zhuge Liang), Odric, or Thalia for Mono White since I mostly play any deck with Mono White, Selesnya's W/G or Bant. I might have a possibility of getting some customized versions of generals for a cheap price.
Out of those, I'd recommend starting with Odric. He can be really good (who doesn't like an unblockable army of soldiers?), and he'll be relatively easy (and cheap!) to build.
I'll make the deck list right now. I'll post later. Need a custom picture for him for casual play and a foil English version of him for tournament play.
PDH decks are SOOOOO cheap, and you can foil out all your commons and its still SOOOOO cheap - $.25/.50 a card. Once in a while you'll find yourself having to buy that random $4 common card, or maybe you REALLY want that $5 FNM Foil exclusive or Promo card, but other than that, decks can be bought for next to nothing.
Now the question is: Do you WANT to play PDH or EDH? PDH has a more limited pool of interactive generals, and many of the decks take on a glass-cannon style of play, but they're easier to design with cutthroat intentions, because the card pool s much smaller, giving you fewer choices. Also they tend to work best as 1v1 decks, multiplayer is hard with PDH, given the limited power of each card.
EDH can become a leviathan unto itself. You can get lost in every aspect of deck construction - from theme/flavor, to pimping, to deck power. You'll never stop tinkering with your deck, and you can pump insane amounts of money into it. I'm very happy with my current EDH decks and they border around $300 each, some more, some less.
I have 2 PDH decks (Scarland Thrinax and Zameck Guildmage) that I keep just in case I find someone else with a PDH deck. They were fun and easy to make, and I'm really happy with them as well, but I find those games tend to be fast, and feel like more honed duels - not like the epic voyages that you can embark on when beginning a EDH game with multiple friends.
To be honest, I just play for fun now since I rarely go to standard tournaments after my Bant/Selesnya Pod rotated out. I could do both just to play it safe. I'm set on Odric for EDH since I'm making the deck list now. For PDH, I'm not sure about the general (maybe Invisible Stalker).
