I am finally starting to try to get into commander, and it is thanks to me winning my first tournament. I won a FTV:20 and wanted to use the cards in a special deck (because I love certain art of cards), so at the moment I just finished making a mono-green Elf EDH deck for some of the cards. I have also recently discovered I like mono colour decks more then dual or tricolour, so I thought to make a second EDH deck so I do not get bored.
I have a Venser, Shaper Savant who I love the new artwork for, but before him was Talrand, Sky Summoner. I like the idea of continuously countering my opponent, but I figured a crazy combo with Venser by soulbonding him with Deadeye Navigator to go crazy and counter and bounce everything off the board. This of course would also allow me to keep countering, but it doesn't seem like it could work in Talrand.
Well, suit up a Palinchron and you have unlocked infinite mana. I am a huge fan of Venser, personally (I run him and blatantly abuse him in Jenara), so I'd recommend him.
I have a Talrand deck and he's absolutely brutal in it. The key is that all the support cards work really well with Talrand because he creates an army of drakes:
- Opposition creates a similar lock to deadeye + venser bouncing lands against a lot of decks
- Coastal piracy and the new blue legendary enchantment artifact both let you draw massive amounts of cards
- Coat of Arms / Eldrazi monument both let you win in just a few swings
- (for when the above aren't out) meekstone lets you attack while preventing most other decks from operating
- You don't need to run a single other wincondition in your deck (or anything besides draw / counter / utility cards) and can kill of an entire table fairly quick
Either way, totally run Invoke Prejudice - the single best mono U card ever printed for EDH
I feel like this would be one of the most ideal ways to build Talrand, unless you want to go more for mono-blue goodstuff, which in that case Venser would definitely be the way to go.

omg.... I love you so much! I never saw that card before!
I agree. We should all only play g/x decks because they are the most objectively fun and anyone who disagrees does not know the truth about EDH. Everyone should just play their decks because interaction beyond high fiving about how many land are in play is unfun and equivalent to casting Stasis while kicking puppies. I for one will never play with anyone who casts tutors, removal spells, blue cards, things I arbitrarily decide I don't like but will probably cast myself later.
I'm a big fan of Talrand. I also have a Talrand miniprimer. 'nuff said, but why should you play Talrand?
There's SO many ways to play him, other than just counterspell-draw-go. The Bident of Thassa and Coastal Piracy are killer. You can play a deck with a super low mana curve and lots of draw to basically produce an army of drakes in no-time. Since they're flying and MonoU aggro Talrand also offers some unique gameplay in that he can be built aggro or tempo-control. He's very resilient if you build him correctly because even if he dies or there's a sweep you can recover quickly.
Venser lends itself to a pretty control-combo build if you ask me, and reliably getting the Deadeye out every game is pretty difficult.

In a vacuum, I would prefer Talrand, but Venser has some great interactions that really makes him worthwhile. Making him into another Capsize with Riptide Laboratory is just hilarious.
I think Venser is the more interesting to make. Talrand is easy, just play Talrand with a bunch of counter spells and you're done. Venser you can be more creative(and evil) with.

So which is better suited for the job of mono-blue? Venser, Shaper Savant or Talrand, Sky Summoner? Reasons?
