So, it turns out like during Amonkhet Prerelease, I happened to be nearby one of my LGS and decided to rush there for the last pod of a prerelease I might have otherwise skipped. Got Djeru, with Eyes Open as my Prerelease foil, not the best of course, but it was one of the 9 "maybe" cards for the format I was considering and with only 5 confirmed other cards, it could very easily be worse.
But since I got a foil one already, I'm more or less obliged to test it out at the very least (in my pillowfort superfriends) and I just realized the number 1 reason why the card irritated me so much (and it wasn't the silly card name) - it doesn't prevent damage to me.
I'm Vorthos-driven (if you didn't know already) and considering how much emphasis there was on "You are a planeswalker as well" the game attributes, a card designed to prevent 1 damage to planeswalkers couldn't extend it to me (supposedly one as well), really? You'll protect both the Gatewatch and Bolas because gameplay > flavor I could understand, but why am I not included then?
Of course, I think it's safe to say it was some power-level-issue problem elsewhere and there are other examples (like destroying planeswalkers) that seem outright silly (and probably impossible) to extend to players, but Djeru prevents 1 damage, one of the most minor abilities I don't really see why they couldn't just extend it to players as well.
Of course, I'm still going to test it (already have it), but that slight exclusion of me when compared to other planeswalkers for a measly 1 damage protection is going to bug the flavor side of me for a good time and combined with the card name it's little wonder why I (mentally or not) roll my eyes everytime I see the card...
PSA for all of you: a cast iron pan left at medium-high heat for about 15-20 minutes heats to above the flashpoint of olive oil. Had a nice fire while making dinner tonight.

Were you using ordinary olive oil or extra virgin? I'm no chef, so I could be completely off about this, but I've heard that extra virgin olive oil has a lower flashpoint than regular olive oil, so if you're cooking with higher temperatures, the regular oil is preferable.

Extra virgin, and my research after the fact backs up what you've heard. I just didn't realize how hot the pan had gotten before I threw anything else in there.

My stovetop disagrees, but that's because it doesn't believe in medium-high. From 1-9, I've got 7 options for low heat, 1 option for vaguely medium heat, and 1 option for nuclear meltdown.

Zedruu: "This deck is not only able to go crazy - it also needs to do so."
My stovetop in Jersey didn't believe in medium-high either, but in the opposite sense - everything above what it called "low" would set off the whole building's fire alarms without fail.
After 2 years of that I'm way too used to it, and I spend waaaaaay too much of my cooking time wondering, "why isn't this hot yet?"
I've had some truly terrible ovens, but my stovetops have usually been consistent. Luckily I'm not big on baking.
Legacy perks: I'm looking at building a bomberman deck and I can pick up almost everything I need for several variants including SB under $10. Modern and standard ruin things a little thanks to Mishra's Bauble (which is actually worse than Lodestone Bauble here in a lot of ways) and Walking Ballista, but even with those I could have everything I need for under $150, which isn't too terrible as MtG decks go. The initial buy-in is super painful but but the format is great once you get past that.

I like modern so long so long as I am happy just playing a deck I like rather than chasing the current top deck. I really liked Pod sadly and then they banned it. Since then I built elves and thats as far as I have gone with modern. Its a bit of a question of how much I get to play modern to be honest. I would be happy if I had a larger LGS with a thriving Modern community but I keep getting in on these smaller areas with smaller modern scenes. It kind of sucks when you have to personally diversify what you own to not get metagamed in modern.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
Just move to Minneapolis area ISB. XP We have a great modern scene and we can edh then
From the standpoint of competitive magic goes, a big city is the way to go. Sadly, I have things such as my job and my wife's job that dictate where I am at lol. I did make it to the twin cities for a modern GP back I think the summer of.... 2014??? I had not been playing modern much though so I opted to just go there and play commander lol. One of the guys who went with my group took like 56th place with Living End.

I think I remember playing against you at that time. It was a while ago, but I remember playing against a Márton Stromgald deck. For some reason, I think that was you. Even if you had another deck, it was still a good time

I did bring Marton and played him a few games. What decks were you playing at the time?
Wait... were you the guy with Zur? I remember a few locals and one of them brought out a almost 1v1 zur but with multiplayer banned list.

I was probably playing Karador, Ghost Chieftain as that was my first deck I really did anything with and at the time it was probably my best deck. My cousin though had (still has) a pretty busted Zur deck that he doesn't play very often so that might have been what you remember playing against.

Yea... I cant recall Karador specifically but there were a lot of games that weekend. The Zur deck stands out to me in part because I was 1v1ing him with my Thrun deck for a few super rough games lol.

I need a new grill. I'm going to wait until the end of summer in order to hopefully snag a sales but I can't decide if the fancy ones are actually worth the money.

That actually sounds like a super cool alter for Spirit of the Night. Now.... if only it sucked less lol.
