Allied most likely. Some sort of gimmick which unique to commander, like commander damage modifiers.
My money's on commander leeches that remove experience counters and poison counters to hard counter a spell in mono-W. Basically just trying to get everything that annoys MaRo into a single card.

I think experience counters have worked out quite nicely and would welcome more cards that use or support the mechanic. Experience may have not created a big splash like their previous ideas but it also hasn't become problematic. Nor has it gone unused like most of their other EDH mechanics.

My issue with them is that because there is literally no direct answer for them, the answer became "beat the crap out of the player (figuratively) and ensure that you kill them ASAP or make sure their general never sticks". And that is a pretty miserable experience for a new player.
Doesn't that just happen with any good commander though?
For any commander named Skittles I suppose. The issue is you can't get rid of experience counters, so you have to prevent them from the start. Take Jhoira, Nekusar, Sharuum, Prossh, etc. You and I both know to kill on sight and keep killed. But if a newer player was running them we'd probably give them the benefit of the doubt. But against Meren or Mizzex it doesn't matter what the deck is because the experience counters will become uncontrollable if they are allowed to accumulate.
I disagree to a point. While yes they are exponential EXP counters are often underwhelming in the effects they give and can easily be diverted with you play enough versatile hate. So that why I feel that they aren't a kill on sight due to that.

This isn't necessarily bad design though. It simply ensures that your Commander remains relevant as the game progresses, which isn't bad.
What I'm upset about is that the metrics and rate of gain aren't equal. Meren gives out exp counters like FREAKING CANDY, so that you can't ever design a BG commander that scales on low amounts of exp counters. This is easily seen in how many counters each respective Commander of the set generates over a game. Meren and Ezuri? 20+. Mizzix? Anywhere from 5 to "until you're dead" depending on the build. Karlov? 7-20. Kalemne? Lol, 5. But that 5 makes you dead in one hit.
It's also difficult to gauge future design space of the mechanic, because they feed off of each other. Having more EXP counters matters in decks will only make it scale that much faster. For Meren, it matters less since she's a binary on/off switch of I reanimate one of anything I want, but that limits future design considerably. EG: If they make a BUG commander based on something with EXP counters and creatures, tossing Meren and Ezuri in the deck makes experience counters like skittles falling from a rainbow.
I just realized something very depressing. Even if Wizards finally completes the Talisman cycle which we desperately need, it will be new border and stupid new mana symbol. Which means that aesthetically the cycle won't match. Which means that it will be very frustrating to run all ten in my cube.

The old ones are new border. Stupid mana symbol won't be going away so better get used to looking at the awful thing. Maybe they'll reprint the allied cycle at the same time?
I played a 2 hour game last night. I'm rebuilding some kind of aggressive deck so no one else in my group has to experience that again. How do the people who like really long games do it?
