So like everyone else, I'm all about our new Hypnotoad overlord. Want to build him as a dredge deck. I know you play Troll, Thug, Imp, Loam, Dakmor Salvage, and Dread Return. And that's about as far as I've gotten. Keep wanting to play things that let me put extra lands onto the battlefield, but that really isn't where I think I want to go.
To stay off-topic, the janky Rith deck that I had only played twice almost took down a table with 2 Medomai the Ageless and a Tasigur, the Golden Fang. Turns out Rite of the Raging Storm is really good when your opponents are just taking 5 to the face every turn instead of blocking.

Still good, they ramp you, and plenty of lands can sac themselves, so extra land drops can still be useful on your combo turn.
I tried to solve the combo, and there are a lot of decklists and discussion that popped up in my thread, if you want ideas. The most resilient/least card intensive is a 4 horsemans combo with it, but I'm avoiding the 4 horsemans situation, personally, in trying to solve the combo. I feel that building a competitive deck is kinda pointless if you can't play it in a competitive setting. The Gitrog Monster - Combo - No Hermit needed
Yup. It's a goofy deck that does cyclical self-mill with Mesmeric Orb + Basalt Monolith into a Dread Return win-con. The fault of the deck is that to avoid being blown out by one piece of disruption, it runs an eldrazi titan to shuffle the grave in and also allow Narcomoebas to be used for Cabal Therapy as well as Dread Return, but then the placement of the eldrazi is random so you need to happen to mill things in the right order or be doomed to another round of shuffling, and the mill is one a time without any real opportunity to shortcut the process, meaning the deck is effectively banned from competitive play due to how much time it takes to win.

Zedruu: "This deck is not only able to go crazy - it also needs to do so."
Sidisi, Brood Tyrant technically solves that issue because you're guaranteed to advance the gamestate on each iteration, but it takes the main selling point of the combo, the entirely artifactsetup and wincon, and adds a 4 CMC 3 colored creature that needs to be in play before you go off. So there's really no reason to run it beyond novelty. If you're running a flip the deck combo, the usual Lab Maniac win is at least as hard to disrupt at this point anyways.

I kinda want to revisit Thraximundar with a standard Grixis control shell. Not really sure what I'd do, but I'm feeling the urge.
I'd recommend doing just that, but with special flavour of control. It's commander, if your playgroup isn't hardcore, then you can afford to go a bit lax with your control. Add in some cooler, less efficient answers. Steal Sac stuff is really cool, less efficient, and ends up giving you more value than regular answers. It ends up being cooler for EDH.
Play mono-R control with just enough UB in the manabase to cast the general. No one will see it coming. You'll probably win every game on the surprise factor alone.

Drafting monored splash my commander is definitely effective in draft, I imagine it would be good in constructed too. Thrax doesn't add much though, I'd go for card advantage or something red struggles with, like card advantage.

I'm too notorious in my group. I don't think I can play anything that wouldn't give me a free pass to sneak in a surprise factor.
I play nearly exclusively EDH at this point, but I felt inspired to put together a goofy rogue modern deck (the details don't really matter) and some friends helped me test it out.
I won 2-1 against abzan company
I won 2-0 against infect
I won 2-1 against affinity
And I lost 8 straight games to colorless eldrazi.
There really is a big difference between intellectually understanding that a deck is that imbalanced and actually experiencing it first hand.

It's pretty much a legacy stompy deck with slightly worse acceleration. It's a very strong deck without the kinds of metagame predators stompy decks usually have. Luckily for modern fans, it's either partially or fully dead in a couple weeks.
I've been considering putting a modern deck together again. Thalia's Lieutenant is a solid addition to Norin, though I'm no longer sure how I feel about having soul sisters if I cut Ajani's Pridemate for her. I still run into the issue of never wanting to sit through tournaments, which is an enormous perk of playing mostly EDH.

So cryogen tells me that the Banned List Discussion thread actually hit 100 posts in a row without mentioning Sol Ring. Being a man of my word, I'm going to do more than just put up my money, I'm going to put up my time and industry. Obviously, I didn't do this in response to the thread, but it's where my dollars will end up.
As a Valentine's Day present, I gave my wife a unique gift: I laid the plans for a charitable foundation for the arts in her late mother's name. I'm currently in the process of lining up all the paperwork and people to incorporate and file as a 501-3C. All the details are going to have to wait until the semester is over in May so that I have the time to do it right, but we'll get there. Here's a draft from our mission statement: The Mary Carter Memorial Foundation for the Humanities connects scholars, students, and artists with opportunities. We seek to create a community of learning by bringing people to higher education and higher education to people. Our primary goal is to promote education in the humanities by providing deserving recipients the freedom to pursue their particular academic and artistic goals involving bringing education to others. What all those words mean is that we're going to fund educators in the humanities (we'll start our focus in literature, but hope to expand) work in their fields--targeting programs in which they're expanding the education outside of the classroom.
That's pretty cool Sheldon. I think I speak for everyone here when I say that no one actually expected to hold you to it. And I'm pretty sure I speak for us as well when I ask that on the page listing contributors, you list Sol Ring.
That's awesome. It's cool that you're holding up what was pretty much a joke, and it looks like a great cause. And I'll third that you should list Sol Ring as a contributor. That's amazing.
cryogen, your employer kind of let me down. Their two day shipping was four day shipping, and signature confirmation apparently actually means that whoever delivers the mail should say that I signed for it on the tracking and leave it in the mailbox anyways. None of these things are actual problems (didn't pay for or care about expedited shipping and signature confirmation is actually a huge pain because I'm not home when the mail gets there), but I'm a little put off that I apparently signed my name for a package without being present to do so.

This is amazing. Well done!
I think that there aren't enough things out there to reward and show appreciation for our educators, so I think this is amazing. Good luck to you on it!

I think 'expect' isn't the word to use there. I wouldn't have held Sheldon to it if he didn't want to, and wouldn't have though less if he hadn't, but I reasonably believed that he'd follow through on it.
I'm probably missing something: Was there some kind of bet involving Sheldon and Sol Ring not being mentioned in 100 posts in row?
Sheldon made a bet that the Banlist discussion couldn't go for so long without mentioning sol ring. He said that the day it did, he'd give money to charity.
I thought it was a number of pages though, not posts.

That sucks. At least we are living up to our standards of screwing up.
Yeah, I don't recall if it was supposed to be 100 posts or 100 pages, but I trust cryogen.
It said posts because I remember when the thread went silent for almost two months you said that it wasn't just time that mattered so I went back to check which is why I knew that they had to be quality posts.
If I recall correctly you also said you'd unban Recurring Nightmare as well.
