I've sworn off minis based games. They're just so expensive, and I don't have the spare income right now. Like, I loved X-Wing Miniatures, but I don't think I've bought a mini over the last two generations.
... Although now I see that they're coming out with figures based on the rebels ships. I might have to get that one.
I like Shadows of Brimstone because the group only needs one set to play it. Its cooperative so its not a feeling that someone beats you because they spent more money on their collection. You buy more minis to get more depth to the game and only one person needs to get the content.

What exactly is it?
I should note that my friends and I all play with my X-Wing minis. It just got to be too pricey for the amount I played.
And then there are board games with minis, that keep coming out with 'expansions' one figure at a time.
As a sidenote, I feel that once 3D printing comes down to around 500 for a decent printer, Minis games are looking to take a massive hit. Why spend 60$ on a tank when you could print one out at a fraction of the cost?

Right now, a 2 lbs. spool of filament runs a little under 50 bucks at Staples. However, that spool can probably make 5-6 HUGE figures. I know some people like the weight of a metal figurine, but I think that's outweighed by 3D Prints having an overall lower maintenance cost over time PLUS figures can be light while still being sturdy (considering we can now print things like fully-automatic firearms, clothes, and musical instruments, which tend to take more damage from sheer exposure.)

I predict the cost in materials will go up when more people have 3D printers in their homes.
I've finally got my mile time under 5 minutes again! Woohoo!
Very nice accomplishment. I think the fastest I ever ran was 10:03 for 1.5 miles, and that was early in my AF career when I was like 155 lbs (so before I started lifting).
Congrats to you both! I got under the 5 min threshold for the 2nd time last year. I'm currently at about a 5:22 for a mile without killing myself so Im very content. Im currently working up to get my 200s back under 21 sec but That one has been harder than lowering my mile times due to I have a much lower muscle density than I did in high school. Im currently at a 22.3 for the 200 but dropping .4 is really hard.
I also got like 60 some cards in the mail today from Puca for my Peasant cube... yay!
Why do you say this? If it does it will be for a short period of time until the supply catches up with the demand.
Also, 50 bucks is as expensive as I've seen filament. I've bought stuff under 20 dollars.
I think it will go up because more people will want it. And honestly, how many people are going to sit around and make the most random of crap just to see it get made?

Yeah, but I imagine by then there will also be a legitimate market for the designs for the figures. You're paying for the design instead of the physical figure.

The flip side being it's easy to pirate that sort of stuff so it is a little unfortunate as it might make miniature design difficult to do from a business sense. It also might just move to a fan based support structure.

Yes, but there is no reason for supply not to catch up really. 3d printing popularity increases daily and the prices of everything drop daily and I've seen little effect on filament availability or price.
and yup, this is what we do most of the time. Make random crap interspersed with the occasional useful item. It's awesome.
One thing's for sure, home manufacturing is going to be big.
I think he is more pointing out that the companies will see it becoming a bigger market and charge more just because they can since they know it will make them money. I think we can all agree that if the companies weren't trying to just make as much money as possible, then supply and demand would rule everything.

Technically it should go down. More demand = more factories jumping in and creating. Unless it gets taxed. That said 3D printers used in Africa by volunteer groups are capable of grinding down water bottles and milk bottles for plastic to use in printing.
So that's a thing that could happen too.
Also, you can get a 3D printer for less than 500, and if you're jumst printing mini's it should be good enough. It just won't print lego precision.
B) Even if you want to print models, it's a lot harder than you would think to get a high quality print on a 3D Printer.
Something you can do is about this level: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:958850 (Note: This isn't the level at which you can model, it's closer to the level in which it will comfortably print; you could easily 3D Print a Warhammer 40K Space Marine, but something closer to Infinity models is currently a no-go)
I imagine further down the line it'll be a lot better (or worse, depending on if you are a model company), but the tech isn't quite there yet.
I will admit, I was thinking about printing out some Chaos Space Marines for my Warhammer 40K army with my 3D Printer, but decided to stay a law abiding citizen (Though not one to the extent of Gerard Butler); no one in my area plays the game anymore, so there was no real point to.
I also was debating on making my own TT game where the point of the game was to build your own custom model and bring it in, then build your own weapons (Using a modal system as detailed in the MRB), allowing you to essentially come in with a (Excuse the Warhammer Lingo) Bolter + Jetpack, Bolt Pistol + CCW, or Lascannon; basically allow you to completely customize your character.
This discussion makes me want to try it again, honestly. I've got the spare filament and the models don't need to be Infinity level....
Honestly, even more than a price point, the thing keeping 3D Printers out of households is more usability issues more so than anything else; Want to print something with the printer right out of the box? Nope, Plastic barely sticks to the hot bed, so you need some Painting Tape. No one tells you that, so unless you look it up you ain't printing much. Plastic isn't sticking to the Tape? Go get yerself the Glue Sticks you need. Oh hey, why the hell is this part sideways, it wasn't before..... nope, bad print.
With manuals that basically say "Good Luck" and any tiny little detail completely screwing your print up.... Don't get me wrong, I love mine and I've made some nifty things, but it was frustrating as **** to get up and running the first month.

This 1000%. I don't have a 3D printer yet, but what stopped me from building a mendel 3 years ago was 2 things:
1) It wasn't up to good enough level accuracy, which limits greatly the useful things you can make with it.
2) I didn't have to time to build it, then calibrate it for a month.
The the option to mod it to print in chocolate was highly tempting.
Also, if you want to build your own models for what you're making... I hope you actually know how to use modeling software. Having taken modeling and animation in college (and promptly forgotten all of it), it's not easy. Luckily, there are enough free models out and about for whatever you need.
I imagine that in 10-15 years though, a number of basic products will be sold digitally and recreated at home.

You know.....
Now that I've figured out the settings more on my DaVinci, I'm going to try printing something a little more detailed. I honestly haven't printed anything too detailed in a while.
Though it remains the same that printing off tiny pieces is a pain in the butt. Even after all of my calibrations/glue/tape, printing something in the 1/8-1/4 inch range is impossible unless you use Superglue (Which is not something you want super heated..... that was a fun day....)
