Yeah I was pleasantly surprised. My luck with packs is usually much worse. I can't count the number of packs where one of the uncommons was better than the rare.
One of the reasons I stay away from drafting is because my luck is abysmal (and I'm really bad at it). The MM2 draft really reinforced that.

And the best part is you probably still lost money on that compared to just buying the single.

[Pr]Jaya | Estrid | A rotating cast of decks built out of my box.
My one pack was Precursor Golem, but I don't care about the rare all that much. Every card had a few little scratches on the back bottom border when they were fresh out of the pack. I also got a foil Dimir Aqueduct, but it looks a little off like it was done using a new type of foiling. Makes me really question if I want to try and pick up any foil cards from the set.

Well I already have one so technically since I didn't need any of the cards in the pack I lost $10. It's going for $15 on SCG right now, so assuming I can unload it soon I'll make a profit.
So who all has gotten it in the ass and tried mm15 draft?
Actually, when Friday came, I drafted it. Three times. In a row. I just moved a to a new apartment, and due to having trouble getting Comcast to come and set up our internet, I was extremely bored.
As many expected, Metalcraft/Affinity is quite strong, but there's several other good archetypes. B/U/G Graft/Proliferate/Wither was insane if built properly, and R/B Aggro/Bloodthirst is very good too. Hell, even Spirits actually works decently if you draft plenty of Eater of Hope and Nameless Inversion (getting to recur a kill spell every time you lost a creature rules.) Of course, Mono-Green Eldrazi's decent if you can get enough of the pieces. About the only archetype I saw that usually failed spectacularly was Elemental Red, and that's mostly because there just isn't enough support for it at lower rarities, especially when all the non-Smokebraider red elementals happen to be at least decent in the R/B aggro deck I mentioned. I guess I'll outline each of my drafts to give you an idea of how things went.
Draft 1 saw a Karn in the first pack, followed up by a Lightning Bolt. I decided that maybe I would give a Mono-Red Affinity build a try. This was the worst possible thing I could've done (I had to maindeck Smokebraiders with no other elementals,) and I went 0-2 with a buy in the third round. The good news was that I drafted a pile of cash, including a foil Hurkyl's Recall (that was like FIFTH PICK,) Wilt-Leaf Liege, All Is Dust, Surgical Extraction, and Karn, so I wasn't that sad.
Draft 2 started with a Thunderblust, at which point, I was like, "Okay, now that I actually know how this deck is supposed to be built..." and grabbed up Goblin Fireslingers, Duskhunter Bats, Gorehorn Minotaurs, and even managed to wheel a Wrecking Ball. Pack three opened a Kiki-Jiki, (and yes, I did get to live the dream and drop Thunderblust into Kiki and swing for 13) and I went 2-0 with a split in the third round. I opened a Goyf in my prize packs, while my opponent opened an Emrakul...and a foil Emrakul....in the same pack. Not even joking.
Draft 3 started with a crap pack, so I started by drafting an Arrest into a Lightning Bolt, so I thought maybe trying to run Boros Aggro. When the third pick in the first pack came around and I saw Lodestone Golem, I decided I would try that Affinity deck that seemed good. Managed to pick up a Dispatch, plenty of Rusted Relics, Cathodions, and Glint Hawk Idols. This was the final draft of the night, and we had a 10-person pod, so I went 1-2, got one pack, and opened Blinkmoth Nexus and foil Niv-Mizzet.
Overall, I'd rate the draft format an 7.5/10. Getting to play with old cards and having very few dead rares (Long-Forgotten Gohei, I'm looking at you) as well as multiple strong archetypes is pretty solid, even if deviating from those archetypes will usually end up heavily punishing you.
I preordered 2 boxes at 200, kept one sealed as either an emergency fund or a badass draft party, and opened the other. My box, in a word, was BONKERS. Noble Hierarch, Emrakul, Wilt-Leaf Liege, Tezzeret, Leyline of Sanctity, Spellskite, Bitterblossom, and to top it off, a Cryptic Command and FOIL Bob in one pack. Even after all the singles tanked, I still came out like 1.5 times in value that will probably go back up (unlike standard boxes) in a few months.
Damn it's good to be back. Moved to a new apartment and had to go off the grid for a few weeks. Plus this 12 MBps/download speed is pretty baller too.

I love watching the prices on MM15 cards plummeting. So far it's killed the prices of a bunch of stuff. Soon I'll be able to reacquire a Fulminator Mage without feeling bad about it.
I realized today that most of the reason why I have 0 irl EDH decks built at this point is because of lands. I can't afford ABURs or Fetches, much less Gaea's Cradle or Workshop or Tabernacle or Bazaar. If I had one copy of each of those lands and a Mana Crypt I'd have so many more decks built. Built Tabernacle and Cradle are more expensive than even the graphic's card I'm saving up for for my computer.
I wish I had gotten into Magic when prices for things were reasonable, lol.
Of course, I was too young to even think about MtG for most of the time when prices were reasonable.
(Yes, I know I could build decks without Crypt and the other cards mentioned, but my local meta is too competitive for that.)

Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5

I'm of the mindset that money is only an obstacle in EDH if you let it become one.
There is something to be said for just budgeting a small amount of money each month to your hobbies. Since, EDH is an eternal format with the requirement to only have one of each card it's pretty easy for a deck to go from extremely budget to high roller status with time and polish. I started playing Jaya Ballard, Task Mage 3 or so years ago made only out of card in my collection, by setting aside a budget of less then $20 a week I was able to go from the barebones to a pimped out list with Gauntlet of Might, Imperial Recruiter, Mishra's Workshop. I'm even foiling it out now.
Magic is also a game where even the most powerful and expensive cards can be answered by 5 cent commons. One option you may want to consider is try and build a deck specifically built to prey on competative decks full of expensive cards. ABUR duals are only nice to have when your opponents aren't packing Blood Moon or Back to Basics. Mana Crypt looks a lot worse when you're up against Null Rod or Titania's Song.
So today is the home-opener for the minor league baseball team that has their stadium on our campus. so they have fireworks... getting launched less than 400 m form my window... when Im trying to do work... they won't stop... its been 10 min now... I now remember why I hate fireworks...
Honestly the biggest issue is that there really aren't any legendary creatures I actually want to build, it's more about the deck strategy, which makes budget versions harder.
(Well. . . I really want a Sunforger deck but I can't get it to work lol.)

This is actually the primary reason why I picked up Commander to play in real life. I feel like as an eternal format that only requires 1 copy of any card, I can more reliably buy into higher power level over time as opposed to other non-rotating formats where I might have to double, triple, or quadruple my investment on a powerful card. Imperial Recruiter or Mishra's Workshop for example are still a bit out of my range but it's nice to know that I only need 1 as opposed to, say, 4, and I'm done.
I can understand the pain of not being able to optimize sooner because of budget restrictions though, lol. My playgroup won't allow me to proxy cards that I can't reasonably get so I can't even test with stuff like that. Though I think my friend has been lightening up about it since he became fascinated with our other buddy's high quality proxy Mana Drain. He said if he gets himself a Gaea's Cradle that he'd think about getting a proxy of a piece of power for me to play with too. I sure don't know if I could pick between Mana Crypt, Workshop, or Recruiter though! Probably Crypt since I could use it in more things.

They didn't care that he was the savior of Fort Keff, the great hunter of Ondu, the champion of Kabira. To them, he was just another piece of flesh, a thing with life to be drained away.
If the only people I could play EDH with when I started the format wiped the table with me if I did not have duals, Wasteland, etc, then I would have never played it. Seems like an oppressive meta. At one point I was earning a good salary and could technically afford such cards, but there is just no way I could justify to myself (let alone my wife) spending $300 on a single card (Underground Sea). I could just never do that. Fortunately I was able to find any number of people to play with who's games were friendly enough that I could run Krosan Verge, Terramorphic Expanse, or Tectonic Edge and still be able to keep up respectably. I have Fetches now from playing Modern (no, I won't buy Goyf for that format either), but I can't say my decks run all that much better when I have them in my lists.
I just think that if the thing stopping you from being on decent footing in EDH games in your meta is your lack of $100+ cards, then that is a sad state of affairs. Competing in Modern, perhaps, or Legacy for sure, but those are higher stakes formats with grinders that want to make a name for themselves. EDH? Doesn't seem like it should be that way.
Though who am I to say how people should have fun or spend their money? No judgement, I just know it is not for me.
I was just boxing up a bunch of cards to donate to the Boys and Girls Club (BTW Portlanders, let me know if you want to do the same- I now have a contact), and there was a lot of nostalgia for cards I used to love when I first started playing Magic. I really wanted to go back to a state when Giant Warthog was the creature card I won more games with than any other, when I was was stoked for any card new to me and each was full of possibilities. I know I am old, and there is no way to have that again, but it was nice perspective for a while.
So, four of us got together Saturday and sealed pool played my two boxes over two pools. My first pool I did incredibly well and I won two matches with going Mardu bloodthirst / spirits. The second pool I went 1-1 with as it seemed less focused as a GW token build.
In my two boxes I managed to pull the following fun highlights:
Plus several good uncommons but I cant recall all of them off the top of my head. I ended up with at least 3 Remand which is great as I think I had like one before. I still have two more boxes on their way which I will at some point draft. It looks like some sort of tron and or twin might be getting set up so far from my box opens. I managed to get 8 mythics over two boxes which is fairly good for the average and no Comet Storms among them luckily.

I have officially moved to MTGNexus. I just wanted to let people know as my response time to salvation decks being bumped is very hit or miss.
I'm sorry man. I hope the draft was fun though... and it sounds like you guys had fun.
I could have finished buying pod a year ago before it got banned which would probably have put me out another $500.00 from where I had been. Noble Hierarch alone would have run me almost $300 of that so really, I don't mind this at all.
I believe I got most of my money back as it stands. I am probably not breaking even but it was fun and its a lot of cards I have wanted to own. I never would have sprung for a foil Karn either so that's super fun to open.
Actually, using current prices I think I broke even but that's also taking into account that a lot of these prices have dropped a lot. Lots of this stuff I had wanted for modern and some for EDH as well so I don't mind it because in comparison to the prices they had been at I am getting a lot of cheap product from where they had been.
You can't really place a value on enjoyment from playing Limited with boxes you buy, so if that's something you care about it doesn't really matter if you got a *****ty pull overall.
I don't find enjoyment in anything, so I would be upset with those boxes.
I have dropped like... $350.00 in the last few weeks foiling a modern elf deck out. Collected Company has really been something I love playing so far. Its funny because I am fully foiling this deck that I have yet to play lol.
I really need to slow some of my magic spending down moving forward thought. Company just sort of caught me out of the blue so I have been doing standard and modern stuff with that plus I wanted MM2015 stuff so I am sort of all over the place of late.

Let me know if the modern deck is any fun, it's like the only deck in that format that even remotely interests me aside from Jund (though they really just seem like gutted versions of the Legacy decks).

I have been playing something sort of similar to it in standard for a while. I similarly was interested in Abzan / Jund before this but this actually looks more fun to me offhand and a lot cheaper to build. I am sort of jumping on foiling it now because I feel like if it becomes a normal constructed deck that places in the future the prices of its cards can go up yet.
Its probably jumping the gun a little but given the popularity it has had since company got printed I figure its probably a matter of time until more people pay attention to it.

I picked up the remainder of the modern elves stuff just before it won the MOCS. I haven't played it yet beyond some goldfishing but it's been decent there. I'm not sure how well it's going to deal with heavy disruption with all of the moving parts, but Collected Company is a hell of a topdeck. I would love for it to get another piece or two of the legacy lists, particularly Wirewood Symbiote (even though I know that's super unlikely), because those are a blast. I grabbed it because it's a nice looking, relatively straightforward deck that I think my fiancee would enjoy and I was only short some of the commons and the Heritage Druids.
I was putting my legacy enchantress list back together because I have the time to play some legacy again and it seems like an ok choice locally. I haven't played it in a few years and I'm spending maybe $25 to get it back up to exactly what I want it to have. I'm not sure if I should bummed about Theros block bricking on options for it or happy that legacy's reputation for having very low maintenance costs after you buy in is holding.
