I played (and still play) Civ III constantly forever. Micromanaging and out-playing my opponents and overwhelming them with the power of the Mayans, Incas, or Sumerians was great fun. I was the kind of guy who would either crush you before turn 50, or else build up a massive empire and just overwhelm you with units.
Then comes Civ V. Almost all of the micromanaging is gone, the ability to stack units is gone (and single-stacks are terribly easy to deal with on any difficulty or against players who don't plan ahead) and the various build strategies have been torched. And why the hell did you get rid of cultural takeovers and building outside of your ZoC... and why the hell can't I choose to either put production or food on my tile instead of being forced into farms?
The road spam removal was probably for the best, but still really puts a damper on the strategies having a good roading system gave you. Gone are the Nukes being dropped on roads to deny resources or travel times Now the nuke is basically just a glorified cruise missile.
Also individual city happiness being replaced by a global count is boring. Instead of managing each city's production individually just hitting a critical mass of happiness lets you ignore those buildings in newer cities for the next 50 turns. Meh.
Embarkation for units breaks coast control in regards to pvp. No more hunting down transports with submarines. Your coasts went from something to be protected and at the same time your strongest locale to a frontier with little to no protection outside of constant patrols by ships that aren't worth building because did I mention cities can attack and don't need garrisons? I'd rather my forces just rampage through your lands than spend any time trying to defend my indefensible coastline.
That being said, some of the aspects granted by Civ V are awesome. Hex maps, caravans, religion (although the interplay within the game sucks, the idea is there), the philosophies, great persons... these are solid ideas.
But overall? Civ V is not the childhood-sucking game of strategic awesome Civ III was.
All that in mind I currently play Civ V more than III because we've got a group of 10-15 people who play it daily, and multiplayer games are fun as hell while drunk.
Im trying everything possible. I usually random everything but time and my civ. I did Arabia ICS on deity. My gripe is that religion needs a slight boost in a way. its kinda a race early on and then you just have to maintain. Also folklore+petra is just stupid. I build in deserts and spam trading posts. I was getting 4000 science a turn from all of that spamming with that one policy that gives science to trading posts.....
Awesome! ...though you are speaking to person, who also considers Mishra, Norin and most of Kamigawa-legends awesome too...
I'm kinda leaning that way myself honestly, especially as my "gives to newbies" deck.
Oh! I finally finished my set of foil Norins at GenCon. Needed one more, ended up buying 3 for $2 each. Best. Purchase. Ever. Now, I have over 80 of them, most altered, including 2 altered foils. Man, it makes me happy inside.

Bring it up with the CI forum. As usual, most will ignore you and it might turn into a lot of trolling about nothing in particular.

He always was. He was my mod mentor when I was but a padawan. He chose to go to the dark side, and eventually we'll duel.

I don't see how he'd build that deck with more than like 8 basic lands.
Who needs basic lands?

I actually like basics over nonbasics when I can, mainly because of the Godo player with Price of Progress, Ruination, Blood Moon, and Magus of the Moon in the deck that he always manages to get, every game O.o
PoP when you've ramped into 14 non-basics is basically gg against a mono-R deck lol. It makes my 3 color deck saaad panda
