Is there any reason why Gray Merchant of Asphodel is not on this list? He has single handedly won me many games. He is a must have for mono black decks and 2-3 color decks as well.

Because he's about as far from a hidden gem as you can get. Virtually everyone who has played the game in the past few years knows the Merchant is a very good card. That's not exactly "hidden."
The purpose of this thread is to point out overlooked cards, not ones that people already recognize are very strong.

Then why do I see cards like Heatshimmer, Mana Echoes, or Gratuitous Violence on here? When has Gratuitous Violence never been good in EDH? I guess it is sometimes hard to tell what is meant by a hidden gem. I will see if I can come up with something better...
... Like Gem of Becoming one of my favorite land tutors in the non-traditional mana ramp colors. It can search for basics as well as dual lands.
I think sometimes cards like Gratuitous Violence - which is obviously a good EDH card - or ones like Mana Echoes, which are clearly very good in the right build, end up being mentioned in this thread because they're older cards that might not be familiar to a lot of players. They're not necessarily hidden gems so much as a lot of people just might not be aware of them, and in that regard, it's probably good they get mentioned.
I think Gem of Becoming is probably underplayed, and that a lot of people have forgotten about it, despite it being printed not too long ago. As such, that seems a legitimate "gem," albeit one that is less obscure than some other choices.

I'm prety sure Gary is in the top 15 Black creatures Thread so hes nowhere near hidden

This thread has also been going for just under 6 years now. The original post has changed, but the thread started because someone had just heard that Rhystic Study picked up in popularity thanks to a forum post and was mostly unknown before that. I don't think we're likely to find any truly unknown cards at this point. I see this thread as more of a reminder of niche and occasionally obscure cards, particularly for people less familiar with the card pool.
I just grabbed an Elemental Resonance because I thought it would play well with the green gods, particularly Kruphix. I haven't had a chance to run it yet but it seems promising.

A card I don't see too often but that I run in any B deck I build is Faceless Butcher - it gets pretty silly with sac outlets and reanimation spells and even without shenanigans, just being able to exile a creature for a while can be really useful. It's a pretty solid part of my Dimir House Guard/Fleshwrither toolbox in Xiahou Dun, the One-Eyed.
Huge fan of this card in my Chainer deck. With a sac outlet (of which I, unsurprisingly, run several), it reads BBB + 3 life to exile a creature at instant speed. Repeatedly. And there's been times when I've reanimated it to exile something of mine to protect it from a wrath. Don't think I've ever been sad to see the ugly little guy.
On a similar note (well, on the note of 4 CMC removal in B), though it is certainly well known to more experienced players and hidden mainly due to its age and cost, I might as well mention another favorite from of mine from my XHD deck - The Abyss. I mention this mainly because newer players may not be aware of it (being such an old card) and if they are able to get a hold of a copy it is a really good card for B control decks.
And for those of us with sane budgets, there's always the Magus
Reverence is a good way to deal tokens and has obvious synergies with generals like Elesh Norn. There are many pillowfort strategies available to white but it is one of the underrated ones.

Nice find. I was away from the game during Kamigawa block, so I've never seen this one before.

The Abyss is silly money; I only managed to get a copy by picking up an Italian one which was going for way below its usual listing price. Magus of the Abyss, as you rightly said, is a great alternative and has the added bonuses of being easy to reanimate and fitting into a Fleshwrither toolbox.
Having played with a foil Magus of the Abyss for years I can say that he's nowhere near the powerlevel of The Abyss. Playing a basic Swamp gives you more board presence in mono-black.
My favorite part of this thread is my having to hop over to PucaTrade and add cards to my want list as I encounter them.
My contribution - which may be on the master list - is Ritual of Subdual. It is not a toss-in card, nor is it one that can be played mindlessly, but in the right deck (for me, it is elf tribal led by Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury) it can lock people out long enough to win handily. Or at least to force concessions.
Another green enchantment is Primal Order; maybe its a bit meta dependent, but wow! When it works, it works.
Edit: both of my suggestions are already on the front page. Bummer.
Cheers!

If in the area, check out Gamers N Geeks and Mini War Games in Mobile, Alabama and Underhill's Games in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
I'm using Ashes of the Fallen in Horde of Notions EDH deck. It definitely sucks in most decks, which I'm grateful for because it keeps the Ashes under $1, but in mine it makes all my dead creatures elementals. It's especially good with Sakura-Tribe elder because you can recur and sac to your heart's content.

I'd love to see will-o'-the-wisp get a reprint, he is an awesome blocker in my nekusar deck and sits nicely in with fog bank and guard gomazoa as part of the defensive critters.

It is most likely because of the time of release rule that is on this topic. It was cutting off at Theros until very recently. Also Gray merchant is on the Top 50 lists which is another reason it did not make it to the list here.

It keeps making its way in and out of my B deck. Glad to see someone else is getting some good use out of it.
He is so good for the cost, just wish there were more reprints of him..
I am really surprised this isnt on the top 50 lists. Though honestly artifacts are hot competition for spots on there.
It's asking to get yourself stone rained in a lot of groups. Mana doublers are a prime target for removal and that one eats one of your lands when it comes in. It's saving grace is that it's cheap enough that it can be effectively used as a ritual, but that's still not really getting everything you were hoping out of it most of the time.

Tariff is a cool card, albeit one that will sometimes have no impact on one or more players. Copying it is even better.
