Greetings one and all to the infamous Hidden Gems list for EDH/Commander. I know your itching to post away but here are the basic rules for everyone:
- NO Cards from the Top 50 list
- Please try to check the list in this post to see if your gem idea is here, its all classified and should only take a few seconds to check.
- NO cards from Standard. This is to give them time to settle and see what can be considered hidden.
- NO cards yet to be released, official preview or not. - The cards in this master list are shown via color identity. Example: Mystical teachings is in the gold section due to the black flashback.
Now I will continue to update this post as we go. Adding the last updated date in the top of the list.
If you notice any mistakes please point them out, I will be glad to correct them.
I have been suprised by a well-placed Brightflame many times now from my Razia deck. I feel the deck itself is really weak, then it goes and one-sided wipes the field and gains 100+ life in one tapped-out spell (even made room for Boseiju, Who Shelters All because of it). The potential token targets and absurd amount of ramp you can use makes this thing really good.
I don't know about this one, as it is ran a lot, but everyone here seems to forget about Phyrexian Reclamation. I have seen 10+ threads wanting a consistent recursion engine and try things like the buyback raise dead instead because they had not seen this. I know I have suggested it a ton, and even Nicol Bolas used to (with Avarice Totem). Just never getting the respect it deserves, but absolutely wonderful.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."
-C.S. Lewis
But the card that made me start this thread is Ashes to Ashes. I've only seen it in a couple of decklists on this site but it seems like a real gem for EDH.
If you're playing white there's no reason not to run this, it's a complete beating.
Hidden Gems: probably Cloudstone Curio. Yeah everyone knows about it but it's pretty much always the "extra" card that gets cut and ends up in very few lists. It's stunningly good.
Gate to Phyrexia is 1 I've rediscovered lately and put to some good use. I'm recomending to anybody looking for Artifact destruction in Mono Black these days.
Jade Monolith, its ok on its own as a way to protect your creatures when you are attacking and still be able to kill a blocker, but I play it in my Darien, King of Kjeldor soldier deck and it is just silly. I can attack and if they block, I just redirect the damage to me instead of my creatures being blocked to death and I get a bunch of tokens out of it.
If you're playing white there's no reason not to run this, it's a complete beating.
I think your thinking of Dust to Dust, but yeah it should be run too.
I actually was looking through some guyz cards one day and stumbled across Ashes to Ashes and I was amazed that I had never heard of this card. It really has never let me down. I'm suprised its overlooked so much.
Cauldron Dance. It's effect is quite ridiculous, especially if you're flipping Karmic Guides and E-Wits. I just stumbled across it in a vendor's bin... Similarly, I've had some good luck with Deathrender and Bloodghast is way better in EDH than I initially thought he was (to be fair it's in a deck with SoFI/SoLS, Skullclamp, 3 ways to find Skullclamp, Phyrexian Tower, and Grave Pact/Butcher, but really he's good ).

So I was! (but then again I was singing Ramstein in my head as I posted so it's not that surprising!)
This is also an excellent card, I've never seen it before. Hum...
Just finished looking through my two EDHs and found another amazing one.
I found this spell Amnesia in a random stack of cards a friend had and I was amazed by it. A powerfull hand destruction spell in blue? Simply amazing. It's a really great way for control EDHs to seal the deal so to speak.
I think some people don't understand that the Mirrans are the bad guys. Arcbound Ravager is Mirran. Phyrexia are the good guys coming in to conquer an evil, evil world.
Juxtapose. I've had this card since I opened it in a pack of Chronicles. In a big multiplayer EDH game, there are a lot of chances to make this card work for you. Trade them your used up artifact mana for their fresh new artifact mana. Trade your piddly creature for their general. It works well.
This is probably worse than the oft-used Vedalken Shackles but Helm of Possession is quite useful for those monoblue decks who could ill-afford the Shackles (monetarily).
If you're feeling lucky, I have seen Helm of Obedience put to good use. Thought Dissector can be pretty sweet, too (stealing Jitte, SoFI\SoLS, Sol Ring, etc is very frustrating for most players).

I have got to say I still don't see the value in Thought Dissector. While Jitte, Swords, and Sol Ring are good cards, you are paying 5+ mana(and five mana is a VERY small amount, its the absolute minimum for you to become a lucky bastard) to get them. And well, if you think that paying at minimum 5 mana is good for a sol ring, then you should probably take a peak at Gilded Lotus.

Yeah, I'd say Helm is cool for the Leyline combo but outside of that it and Dissector could just be copies of something more generally useful.
Peter:"A boat's a boat, but the mystery box...it could be anything! It could even be a boat, you know how much we want one of those."
Thinking about it, I was one of several people at a table once that got stomped pretty hard by a Rakka Mar post-Hallowed Burial. May end up being my next general (he was just using it in his Kresh deck at the time).
Emmara is like the worst parts of Legends and Homelands got pregnant, aborted the fetus, tossed it in the trashcan, set it on fire and wrapped the corpse in a Dragon's Maze pack wrapper.

Currently 62/265 cards.
Koskun Falls is the other one. Not that it's ~that~ amazing, but black shouldn't get a Ghostly Prison.
WUBRGPauper Battle BoxWUBRG ... and why I am not a fan of Wayne Reynolds' Illustrations.

Everyone laughs at my worldslayer, then i master transmute / tinker in a darksteel forge... Suddenly not so funny now.
As posted already Ashes to Ashes is a great removal spell.

Takes care of tokens, planeswalkers, and annoying +1/+1 counters, all while leaving your guys perfect!
Is the guy in the art someone in particular or just a random guy?
[EDH] Ob Nixilis the Fallen
I'm pretty sure the guy in the art is Bo Levar.
Speaking of hidden gems, Tsabo's Web is mine. I've never once seen it played but it can really wreck some decks!
I agree with you. I have her in my Kira, Great Glass-Spinner EDH deck and she is amazing. Rayne doesn't disappoint.
