deathsprout seems kind of great, but also kind of worse than it looks. You want ramp ASAP, but you want removal only when absolutely necessary. Killing some medium value target on t3-4 is kind of a waste of time imo. The timings are totally different.
Not that it's bad, but I don't think it's amazing.
I was thinking much the same, this is well put. There's just not going to be very many scenarios where it does all of what it can do at one time.
I think it'll be a good answer to early cheap commanders while still allowing you to continue ramping.
I think it'll be solid for metas where people are playing must-answer commanders on early turns (like zur or mizzix or whatever). Outside of that I think it's basically a split card between a mediocre rampant growth that also takes a little value off the board if you have it early, and a 4-mana removal spell late-game that you sit on until the time is right.
I think you guys and gals are a little too down on this card, I view it like a Modal spell, you can either kill an important threat..or Ramp if you need too, it is like Murder or Natural Connection with an extra mode for 1 more.
only con is white gotta focus on life gain and utility cards
oh by the way i just realized a broken trick with Vivien's Arkbow its simply library of leng because it doesn't matter who makes you (can be yourself by the way) or how its discard you can put it back on top of your library so you only have to pay 1 for X and just put the creature straight into play
the same trick applies to Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion since you can just get all the cards back just like that
I wonder if new Tezzeret will automatically be on the RC and CAG's radar...
There is only one card that can clone a planeswalker right now, and Tezzeret only works in artifact decks. This makes me think he is not going to be ubiquitous enough to warrant a ban. No 'interacts poorly with format' issues. Don't see why they would even think about it.
I don't think that new Tezzeret is all that dangerous, Affinity was a lot of pieces and the engines for those pieces weren't often artifacts, you will need an absurdly potent draw engine to back up those zero cost artifacts, after all you will need 40 Artifacts to kill someone with that, and if you have drawn and landed 40 permanents..chances are you are gonna win regardless.

This works with new Neheb but not the Arkbow, sadly. Costs aren't effects.

It doesn't appear to work with Neheb either. Discarding cards to his ability is *also* a cost:
117.12. Some spells, activated abilities, and triggered abilities read, "[Do something]. If [a player] [does, doesn't, or can't], [effect]." or "[A player] may [do something]. If [that player] [does, doesn't, or can't], [effect]." The action [do something] is a cost, paid when the spell or ability resolves. The "If [a player] [does, doesn't, or can't]" clause checks whether the player chose to pay an optional cost or started to pay a mandatory cost, regardless of what events actually occurred.
I can only assume that sheldon is trying to be relevant to both new/potentially new EDH players, and not just to EDH veterans. To new players (or even new to magic), these cards would be easy to get and be relatively useful in that sort of meta.
But back to new cards, i've been kinda unimpressed, outside of possibly the new zeferi PW. But that wouldn't even be for EDH, it'd be for other formats.

Well he also totally ignores the far superior counterspell dovin's veto, and the excellent new board wipe time wipe. And nowhere that I can see does he say "this is good for a new player" or "good budget counterspell". He makes it sound like these cards are just good all-around, which is a bit of a joke.
His selection of cards just makes no sense. To say nothing of that fact that it's kind of a waste of time to do a set rundown before the set is fully spoiled (especially when he's intentionally leaving out the leaked stuff).
To be fair, I can see Vivien's Grizzly seeing a little play as it gives green decks a second Duskwatch Recruiter: a tutorable mana sink that should win the game that turn if you've got infinte mana (assuming you've actually built your deck with this in mind). I've seen a few decks that might want a second copy of this effect. Not that Sheldon actually mentions this use of it in his article, but still....
I'll probably cut Massacre wurm from my deck It has given me so many moments but my mana is too bad for triple black and I have far too many 6 drops so this being 1 mana less matters. Plus my deck plays forbidden orchard that can start the chain if needed.

Evolution Sage is pretty saucy. And its an Elf and a Druid to boot. Granted that Elves only have minimal +1/+1 counter interaction (Rishkar, Peema Renegade, Joraga Warcaller, Metallic Mimic, Marwyn, the Nurturer, and run only a few other types of counters (Planeswalkers, Door of Destinies). I agree that where this will see a ton of play will mostly be Superfriends and +1/+1 counters non-Elf decks.
