I'll always be an advocate for making your own deck box. In a format that seems to encourage personalizing your deck, I can't image why players wouldn't want to personalize the items that go with the deck.
Because there are people like me who can't DIY to save our lives. I tried to make one of those deckboxes from booster boxes, and ended up with something that begged to be put out of its misery. ;_;
The most I've done alone these lines is putting the Azorius prerelease sticker on my storebought box. And even then, I wasn't able to place it in the center. oTL

Nonsense. If you can measure out a line using a ruler and you can cut on said line, then you can make a box. Admittedly there are some projects that require more than measuring and cutting, but I think those are the main parts that require a little bit of precision. Gluing/taping pieces together is basic, and painting isn't required to make something nice.
I'm with you on the sticker thing. I hate putting stickers on things because I never get the sticker exactly where I want it.

Does anyone have any tips on how to fight foil curl?
Three words: Walk-in humidor. The only thing that will permanently stop curl is to move or change your environment in some way, otherwise you are just looking at band-aids. Double sleeving helps a lot...heck I have started to put all the foils I pull in to perfect fits right away before they go in a binder, which keeps the from being scratched and stops the worst bending. MY older foils get stuffed in to penny sleeves about 10 at a time to keep them tightly packed. Though it is strange to me that I take all that care and actually pretty much hate using foils. It is the most annyoing thing about EDH, actually, becuase I come face to face with so many "pimped out" unreadable decks that I need to read because my memory is highly selective. I think in the back of my head I think someone will give me a plethora of currency for them some day, though last time I ended up giving away two fatpack boxes full of them for my son's girlfriend's art project.
I make my boxes too. I think it comes from being impatient and not wanting to wait until I can get out and buy something. My EDH decks are in a small aluminum tool-box I got at a hardware store.
It holds 1200 single sleeved cards pretty tight. or 1100 plus little "stuff" box I made for it. The tool box was $14.99 and then I spent a couple bucks on balsa-wood for the dividers.
I'm glad to see this topic back on the front page. I've viewed this thing countless times just looking at reviews and references for cool products.
Oh, and if someone starts making a wooden deck box with a lock and key, definitely PM me. I'll be interested in buying one!
So I figured I've had enough time to review a couple of products for everyone. The 3 big names as it seems: KMC Mattes, Dragonshield, and Ultra-Pro Matte Sleeves (Anti-Glare). I've been using them all about the same time, so I think I'll give my opinions on them!
Dragonshield: Ahh I've always heard good things about these. They come in wonderful colors, and they are already packed with 100. Just how many I need! They are sold at my LGS for around $10, so I thought I'd pick some up. And let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed the first time. After I sleeved everything up I was left with 5 extra sleeves (BONUS!) and they seemed to fit perfectly. Shuffling was nice and smooth, and they certainty looked good while I played them. After awhile they started getting noticeable scratches on them (Like most sleeves would) but none never split. Being slightly OCD about how nice my stuff has to look, I went to buy some more, but this time I went with a different color.
I was pretty shocked that not only did I only get 92 sleeves, but they were cut very sloppy. Some were missing the actual plastic casing. I took them to the manager of my LGS and he told me that's happened before. Unfortunately they didn't have anymore Dragonshield in stock, so I just had to get a refund.
Overall, they were a nice, and clean experience. I've been weary on buying them again, but maybe one day I will. They do come in nice colors and shuffled like butter.
KMC Mattes: Now keep in mind, these aren't the perfect fits. So don't confused them as some people do when I tell them which sleeves I'm using. These were suggested to me from a friend as we were playing and some of his sleeves split. He went to go buy some and grabbed two packs of these. Since our store only has 80ct, he had to buy two at 8 bucks a pop. That's already $6 more than Dragonshield, but you are also getting 60 more sleeves for back ups, or even to throw a T2 or Legacy deck into.
I had the extra money, and my sleeves were pretty crappy at the time (I don't remember what they were) and I thought, "Why not?". Let's splurge. Initially I loved how sleek they were. The clear plastic front was beautiful, and I could see the details on my foils quite nicely. I had black of course, so the actual back part was nice. However after a few times of shuffling, I noticed the sleeves would get these little "dents" or marks in the back of the sleeve. That didn't sit well with me, and my friend told me that's how they are. But they'll last forever. And indeed they have. I've had these sleeves on my Pauper EDH Deck and they've been on their for a few months now. They still look completely fantastic, with the exception of the "Dents". If you have the extra money, and want something durable, these are for you.
Ultra-Pro: Pro Mattes: I noticed these sitting on the shelf in my LGS for only $3.50 for a pack of 50. I went ahead and bought two for only $7! I found it really convenient that these were the cheapest sleeves in my store, and yet they looked nice. I loved the actual back of the sleeves. To this day you can't really see any scratches or dents or anything. I only have 2 complaints about these, and one minor one.
I really love the back, but the anti glare really takes away from foils. In some games people don't even realize a card is foil, until they take it out of the sleeve. Which isn't a HUGE complaint. However I love the art of my cards and when they just seem to pop out. This kinda restricts that. Once again, not something major, just a little annoyance of mine.
The other minor complaint is the corners. A few of the corners of the sleeves have creases from shuffling I can only assume. As I keep my cards in a box at all times.
Now on to the big complaint. A lot of these have split. Quite a few. I have three methods of shuffling, and it depends on how fast we want to start and how I choose to shuffle. Now if you plan on getting these, I would recommend to take the time to pile shuffle them. As traditional shuffling and corner shuffling has split a few sleeves. Even though this is the biggest complaint, it doesn't really seem to bother me.
Like I said, these sleeves are only $3.50. I ALWAYS buy 3 packs. Sure it's the same cost of some Dragonshields, but you get 50 sleeves in case of breakage. And some people who use these may not find splits. I'm a tad hard when I shuffle. So it may just be me. For bargain sleeves, I always seem to go with these. No matter what.
And that everyone is a somewhat review of some big name sleeves, and my experience with them. I hope it can help someone when they are going sleeve shopping, and always keep in mind my experiences may differ from others!
A word to the wise about the Ultra-Pro Matte Sleeves. When my friend and I went to go buy sleeves for our EDH decks, we were advised by my LGS to buy an extra pack in case they split. The reason being for this, or so we were told, was that no two shipments of the Ultra-Pros are cut identically, and if we wound up buying more at a later time there was a good chance that they would be slightly different in size. Me, being the cheapskate, opted out of it an only bought 100, as did my friend. Now I've done my best to take good care of mine and haven't had to see any of mine split yet, but my friend has and sure enough, when he bought an extra pack later he found that they didn't quite line up in his deck the same. It's not a huge deal, but if you're really OCD about that sort of thing like I am you'd probably want the extra pack as a backup.

Decks:
I've found some Dragonshield sleeves tend to be miscut, but you end up either
1) Having a few extra sleeves, so 1-2 miscuts really don't matter as it's still more then enough to sleeve any EDH build.
2) You have just enough to sleeve EDH decks, it depends on how they are packaged.
But my personal preference at one time was official Ultra Pro sleeves, but i've since switched my sorry butt over to Dragon Shield's they tend to last a lot longer.
I'm not reading all 20 pages of this, but I'm sure someone here knows the answer - what brand of sleeves are best when trying to show off the foil-yness of foils? I've noticed in other people's decks that some show off the bling better than others.

I use all UP black mattes, and I can confirm there is an issue with this. It bothers me a little, but I'm not going to resleeve 7 decks now.
Other than that, I love the sleeves. I haven't had any splits (but I'm very gentle), and they stay nice and slick for a long time.
Hi there. There have been some questions about the Lock & Lock containers I described. I found time to get some pictures. :B
I only found these purple ones recently. They're most readily available in the default blue lids. One can actually hold up to two single-sleeved decks. I double-sleeve, but there's still some space for a small dice/counters bag.

It's not just the sleeves, they print foils in different ways, so Shadowmoor foils are darker in their ink, Zendikar and Alara foils look amazing, and Innistrad block foils don't look foil at all, a real shame.
BUT, the best sleeves in my opnion to bling foils are Ultra Pros, but I prefer Dragon Shields because they last so much longer.
Stay away from Pro Matte Ultra Pro sleeves, the matte front really kills the shine.

So I have a sleeve related question about commander.
I've read on this thread that some people triple sleeve their commander. Also, when I was playing I noticed some people use a different color sleeve for their commander. So what happens when their commander gets tucked into the deck? What is the proper protocol here? It seems like it's a marked card. Thanks in advance!
If your commander is pretty cheap, I'd suggest having a second copy in the same sleeve as the rest of your deck on the side. If it isn't cheap, then I've just had in a sleeve in a top-loader and then taken it out to tuck it.
Haha well that would help Thanks for the link. I like the holiday gift boxes a lot actually. They hold approximately 1200+ sleeved cards which is great.

Yep, no problem.
I like the holiday gift box, just not as something I'd carry around.
I still think making your own deck box is the best choice because you can customize it to exactly the size you want.

First time I had seen them before, apparently they are a newer product and at the moment a bit hard to find. Was only $10, so I just traded in some cards I had cut from my deck for it.
Holy crap I am in LOVE with this box. I love the satin finish, for starters. It fits together nicely, pretty secure, though I can't say I would recommend shaking it around upside down or anything.
It's made to fit 100 double-sleeved cards, and it does so with no issues at all. On top of that I was even able to fit my general in it and I have him in one of those hard plastic cases that are like a shell that splits in half (hope I described that alright, sure you know what I mean).
The bottom also comes off and holds dice with plenty of room. I have a decent number of little metal tokens I got from Dark Platypus in there, as well as one of their life counters (though the screws came out so I don't really use that much anymore), a few spindowns, another d20, and a few other random dice in there, all of them fit just fine and it holds in very well when closed.
Time will tell how well this one holds up, but as it stands this is by far my number 1 deck box for the format. Really really really happy with it.
I caved in and bought some DS game boxes since they were easily available and they're perfect for double sleeved pimped out decks.
They fit 100-105 double sleeved cards much better than those clear boxes players use by Ultra-Pro. It's insane how higher quality they are. The Ultra-Pro clear boxes are much too tight if you have a lot of foils in your EDH deck, too. I switched two of my decks over and I've never looked back since!
