Hey guys, I've been into magic for about half a year now, and i like to make decks in every format, i have several standard decks, a few modern decks and a legacy deck, but no EDH. I figured i would change that.
I know the basic rules of Commander, but I'm having a tough time with the 100 cards, My general play style is aggro, and i love Red and Green the most. (I run a very successful Gruul deck). I think it would be amazing to run a mono-red commander deck, because there wouldnt be a worry about mana fixing. And a low drop commander would be a fun idea. But in addition to this, i have a budget. I cant afford to blow 20 bucks on each card. I would maybe set the max price at 50-100 bucks?
if anyone could give me an idea of what cards i could use, and a good general that would be much appreciated. I've always heard that commander is one of the most enjoyable formats in all of magic and i really want to get into it. Thanks.
Rahda, Heir to Keld is probably the most efficient aggro beater in R/G if that's what you're leaning. Stonebrow, Krosan Hero and the new Gruul guild champion are both pretty good for midrange beats.
EDIT: Ruric Thar is the latter guy I'm thinking of.
Well, it'd actually be 99 cards once you pick your general. There's a lot of useful deck construction stuff stickied in a post, which might help a bit.
Ask yourselves, all of you, what power would hell have if those imprisoned here could not dream of heaven?
EDH:
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV Zo-Zu the Punisher Phelddagrif
Rhys the Redeemed
Ashling the Pilgrim
Ruhan of the Fomori
Rafiq of the Many
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker
Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief
Lazav, Dimir Mastermind
Aurelia, the Warleader
Animar, Soul of Elements
Borborygmos Enraged
Riku of Two Reflections
Thanks for the suggestions guys, they have been really helpful, however I've been looking at ideas for my general, and i really like the possibility of a RDW? I also dont know if it would be completely unreasonable to use a dragon hatchling as my commander, it sounds retarded i know, but he's a cheap source for firebreathing, viable with seething song? and koth?
Straight RDW is very difficult in Commander if you're not doing 1 vs 1. Krenko, Mob Boss is your best bet because he is so exposive once he gets going, and goblins tend to be cheap.

Are you playing Pauper EDH? Otherwise you've got to choose a legendary creature.
It's all explained in the primer. Basically, Norin is a highly disruptive deck that can take advantage of cards like Genesis Chamber, Warstorm Surge, and Confusion in the Ranks. It's about the most Red thing you can play in EDH.
However, if you want to play something like Red Deck Wins... you can't. Well, you can, but there's little chance you'll ever win with it, given the way burn and cheap aggressive creatures scale poorly to a format with multiple players starting with double the typical life total. That doesn't mean you can't play aggressive decks, though, just that they look different. Krenko is an easy choice, as you have all of Magic's goblins to pull support from, and he can very quickly flood the board with tokens. Stonebrow is another very simple build, you just put in the most cost-effective G/R guys with trample and go to town. Another aggressive general that can be built on the cheap is Godo, Bandit Warlord - he gives you easy access to something Red sorely lacks (a good tutor) and can close out games with incredible speed with multiple combat steps and equipment buffs.
That sounds interesting, i may have to look into that Godo, Bandit Warlord idea, it seems like it would be pretty card specific, but id love to use it, thanks

stuff
Norin the Wary, Zo-Zu the Punisher, and Krenko, Mob Boss are all fairly decent aggroish generals that you can manage with a budget. Ashling the Pilgrim is also a very budget option, I find.
Rahda, Heir to Keld is a pretty effective aggro general. Borborygmos Enraged is also a decent budget deck.

I draft and play EDH. If a Standard player can't understand who a card is for, it's probably for me.
I also write things about good films.
