Hah, yea, he's actually decent. I mean, he's no God general, but he's got a couple good points:
1. He's pretty docile, meaning that he can get big, yes, but he's not that much of a threat that everyone would feel like they'd have to get rid of ya.
2. He's got great colors. Personally, UBW is my favorite.
3. In EDH, as you know you can probably get out 14+ lands out no problem. That's a pretty big beatstick.
As much as I like Blackblade, and the idea of him... there's really not much good land accel for him in-color. I'm actually designing a speed land deck (not around Molimo, but he IS in the deck) which focuses a lot on green. The general? Vaevictis Asmadi.
As for the Zur discussion, the main problem is this: any time you need to devote extra cards to specifically combat one card (general or not), then you need to take a look at that card and ask whether it is overpowered.
Personally, one Krosan Grip to Flickerform, and Zur becomes human again. And Zur doesn't even have access to some of the best enchantment protection available, Sterling Grove and Privileged Position. So as powerful as Zur is, there ARE plenty of answers that people already play.
But not everyone has access to green. The only answer I have is, find something in your color. And there IS something, I'm sure. Think outside the box.

They love and hate to see me walk through the door. I'm the man with the box, one to carry all his Standard cards with him. I've got the commons and uncommons they need. But I've also got my decks. If I walk into FNM, I came to play. And they never know what I'm gonna pull out of my hat next. I may lose more than I win, but it just might be THIS deck that has all the answers that they don't have answers for. They fear the unknown. They fear me. And they never see me coming!
With Zur you Dont need to devote cards to destory him....everyone SHOULD be running any mass removal they can get thier hands on anyway. Its ALWAYS good in the format. Its just hard to kill zur otherwise.

There's never been wiser words.
I mean, Zur is good. Really good. Maybe one of the best (in my opinion he is one of the best). He has his weak points like any other creature. He can get killed, negated, messed with etc. But he's just a creature, and that to me is one of the most easily disrupted variety of spells. So don't knock him just because he can be disrupted. Give me a general that can't.
I'm not even saying that he should be banned. I just said I'm surprised it wasn't even considered, comparing the power levels of him and other generals. He's not exactly as cheap as Rofellos, but he's up there, you gotta admit.
After getting a few chances to play the deck I think Oona, Queen of the Fae will be making an appearance in this thread.

Maybe you can share your experiences with this card? I've yet to use it, and have been thinking about it since I saw it.
I don't have the deck handy since I'm not home, but I'll write up more later when I get a chance. The great thing about her I've found is usually once she hits all you have to do is protect her and you don't need to play anything else except her ability.
In one game I had out Blackguard and Liege when I dropped Oona, my opponent scooped after he realized that all I need to do is sit on some counter spells to protect her and I'm making 4/4 flying tokens that make you discard when they do damage every turn for X mana.

I've had Garza Zol built for a awhile and it's just a blast. She's big, hasty, and she flies. Not to mention she does stuff when she hits.
The other 2 I have built are Hanna and Visara. Both of which work amazing-ly.
I've seen Jhoira do sick, insane things though... So I'd say she's up there. Heartless Hidetsugu is also a lot of fun (depending on who you're playing with :p). Rakdos is also a good option if your deck can play around him.

“Should I be worried? He does seem dangerously cool, like a young Lando Calrissian, with a dream.”
Typical Zur opening: turn 3 Zur (with any number of accelerators), turn 4 Diplomatic Immunity, turn 5 Daybreak Coronet, turn 6 Empyrial Armor, etc, all with counter backup... Maybe the Zur decks you saw weren't playing it this way?
I know this is from a while ago, but... How can you do that?
With Diplomatic Immunity on Zur, you can't put any more enchantments on him.

If you find an Aura, you have to choose a legal target or it just remains in your library.
Zur is no longer a legal target because he has shroud now...?
I think this makes Zur not as much as a threat as people think he is.
Oh, and I think the best generals are Zur and Jhoria

I'm running a Zur deck right now myself. Zur doesn't target when he puts enchantments in play. They are just put in play and attached to him but without targeting.
Also, rather than Daybreak, first I make him +2/+2 unblockable and lifelink with a steel of the godhead before tossing the daybreak on him the next turn. Yummy double lifelink, unblockable, untargetable.

Did you not see the quote from the Coldsnap FAQ???
It says that Auras need a legal target, or they stay in your library.
Do we just ignore the rules when we use Zur as a general?

Auras the come into play and attach to something don't actually target, so you can put enchantments fetched with Zur can attach to things that have Shroud.

Even though the FAQ says Auras searched with Zur need a legal target to attach to?
(btw Zur with shroud makes him an illegal target.)

Yes. Per the ruling on Gatherer:
15/07/2006 If you use Zur the Enchanter's triggered ability to search for an Aura, it will be put into play attached to an appropriate permanent. It doesn't target that permanent.

I'm thinking Sygg, river cutthroat is going to be inching up this list. In a six player game, you can end up drawing a ton of cards before it's your turn again.

If you search up an aura with something like zur, there has to be something to attach it too. If there were no green cratures in play you couldn't fetch Wurmweaver Coil with Academy Rector. But searching for an aura and putting it into play means the aura doesn't taget, so you can put it on a troll astedic you don't control.

Green has Tranquility and Whirlwindwhich nerfs him
White has wrath of god
Black Damnation
Red has Inferno and Wildfire
Blue has Evacuation and Ixidron
all of which are good on thier own, but can deal with zur....and are easy to get a hold of

Nope. No need, I don't think. It's not that powerful of a card. Compared to Oblation, it's a walk in the park.

So many cards combo so well with her ability, Oona's Blackgaurd, Glen Elendra Liege, Dire Undercurrents, Helm of the Ghastlord even just plain old Scion of Oona is a bomb if you have the Queen in play.
